Normally I don't buy stuff like this, but I saw the ad on TV, so I thought I'd give them a try and if they were awful I could let you all know. So you wouldn't waste your money. Aren't I nice? ahem.... anyway... Special K Biscuit Moments. You'll notice I bought the Strawberry flavour, because the other flavour is blueberry and I'm not a fan. (Blue flavouring irritates the inside of my mouth and if there is blue colouring as well, I'll be scratching an itchy rash in no time). two biscuits for less than 110 calories.  I don't think it is possible for me to care less about this bit. I'm not a calorie counter, never have been. I don't eat biscuits much either, so I figure any calories in them is okay. It would be a different matter if I was the sort of person who ate a packet of biscuits all at once, or even a packet throughout the day. inside the box is five of these little foil wrapped packages.... each containing two biscu...

Sunday Selections #159

Image
Welcome back to Sunday Selections! This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs. The rules are very simple:- 1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title 2. link back to me, River , somewhere in your post 3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted. 4. hop on over to TheElephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos. Kath and Andrew often join in as well, although Kath has been quite busy lately and unable to join us. There are several other participants now though: Jackie K at WorkingThrough It Gillie at RandomThoughts From Abroad I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I'm showing you something I have a lot of in my home. BOOKS books for fun, dictionaries to help with crosswords...

another Wednesday's Words story

the second set of words from Delores was: 1. dance 2. France 3. prance 4. romance 5. stance 6. glance Here goes.... "Dad, we need to talk. I'm taking a stand, this is my stance ...." Scott faltered a moment, unsure if stance was the correct word, then straightened and looked his Dad in the eyes.  "You know how much I want this, how much I love to dance , won't you let me take this chance?" Wayne stood and came out from behind his desk, crossing the room to look down at Scott. He glance d away for a moment, unable to suppress a twitch that might have been the beginning of a smile......."let me get this straight. You want me to let you go to France , to prance around in tights on some stage in front of hundreds of people?" Scott took a deep breath, stood his ground and replied, "yes". "Son, when you first started this ballet stuff, I was disappointed, I admit that, I'd hoped you'd play basketball, like I did. ...

Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesday’s, Delores, from Under The Porch Light, has a meme which she calls “Words for Wednesday”. She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, or a poem. I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story. It’s a fun challenge…why not join in? This week's words are: 1. instant 2. telegram 3. flash  4. brilliant 5. zipper 6. frost Here is my story: A brilliant flash of lightning cracked open the sky right in front of her and she stumbled and fell in surprise. There'd been no thunder, no other warning that a storm might be approaching....she glanced skyward, at the heavy black and grey clouds hanging so very still, so low. Towards the horizon, the clouds were whiter, almost blending in with the snow that blanketed the fields, making it hard to determine where earth ended and sky began. She sat for a moment, a little dazed, wondering where she had been going and why. In an instant she remembere...

For Robin.....devilled chicken

Devilled Chicken Wings  Here's the recipe:- 2kg chicken wings or drumsticks 1 large onion, sliced 1 teaspoon mustard powder 1 teaspoon curry powder 1 teaspoon oil 2 teaspoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar 1 cup tomato sauce. Put chicken wings into a lightly oiled oven-proof pan Fry onion until beginning to soften (this is where I add rough chopped carrots if I'm using them) Add everything else  (I whisk it all up in a big jug as I'm measuring, then just pour it onto the onions) Bring to the boil then simmer for a minute Pour this mixture over the chicken wings making sure each wing is coated Bake at 180*C until done to preferred crispness, about 1-1 and a half hours  Drumsticks will take longer to cook through than wings, for those I usually put foil over the pan for the first half of cooking time. When done, the chicken is usually so tender the meat just falls ...

winter food in the heat of summer

Yesterday I woke up hungry for chicken wings. Devilled chicken wings.  It's a winter dish that I cook several times between Easter and October. It is still hot here, but a cool change with a little rain is on the way, so I'd say autumn is in sight. Way off in the distance, but if you squint your eyes a bit..... It would appear that my stomach is heartily sick of lettuce and whatever other salad ingredient I happen to have on hand, so I checked the fridge for lemon juice, (yes, got some), put on a load of washing and headed to the shop for chicken wings. Got home, hung out the washing and got busy in the kitchen. Measure, mix, peel, chop, stir, put the whole lot in a baking dish, put into pre-heated oven and clean up the mess. Turn on the computer and read blogs etc while waiting for that delicious devilled chicken wings aroma to spread from kitchen to living room. Oh....there it is...yum. So, devilled chicken wings, mashed potato and broccoli for dinner last nig...
