Sunday Selections # 151

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.
Kim spends more time writing at The Shake these days.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to TheElephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.

Kath and Andrew often join in as well, although Kath has been quite busy lately and unable to join us.
There are several other participants now though:
Jackie K at WorkingThrough It

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I'm continuing with some photos of the area surrounding these flats I live in.

I heard a knock on my door one late afternoon recently, it was my neighbour P, she'd just arrived home from visiting a friend and wanted to tell me she'd seen a koala in a nearby street, maybe I'd like to go and get a photo.
Well, of course! A koala right here in the city? Grabbed the camera, locked up the place and headed out.

I checked two entire blocks around the street P had mentioned, but found no koala.
I did spot a random cat,

waiting for her owner to get home from work and feed her.

she came running to me for a scratch behind the ears and a little conversation.

I'd spent quite a bit of time wandering around gazing up into every tree looking for the koala, so the sun was going down and I was getting a little chilly, so I said goodbye to the cat and started walking home.

Turning into my street, I was greeted with this....

pretty fabulous colour contrast. Normally not so vivid, the lighter tree behind was lit even more by the lowering sun.

A little further along my street was this....

sunset gilded trees. The sun had dropped low enough to highlight just the tops of these very tall trees.

Disappointed with not finding a koala, I comforted myself with baking.

I have a new, deep, square baking tin....

with a removable base!

What did I bake?

chocolate cake of course!

See?

it's a non stick pan so the cake and paper lining came out cleanly.

Ta-Da!!

I sliced the cold cake through the middle, spread it with that pot of jam you see in the back left, added whipped cream and reassembled the cake.
I didn't bother with icing, just sliced it into portions and put them all in the freezer.

Of course this was a couple of weeks ago, so there is not much of the cake left.  A slice removed from the freezer while I'm eating dinner takes only ten minutes to thaw. Just in time for dessert.

I'll probably not worry about finding that koala, he's probably wandered on home by now, but I'll keep looking for the kookaburras I hear but can't see several times a week.

Comments

  1. Personally I would have been happier with the 'random cat'. Great photos and light.

  2. I would have rushed out on a koala hunt too. And to see kookaburras.
Love that random cat, and the trees, and the light. Not to mention the cake.

  3. We both caught some interesting light in photos. You don't think of koalas as being fast moving, but maybe they can be. They can certainly be very hard to see in trees.

  4. Never seen a koala in my area but we do have a few kookaburras visit a lot but hard to get photos but we often hear them laugh.
Great photos of the trees with the sun setting behind them and as for that cake it's a beauty, I like chocolate the best too.

  5. That dish behind your baking pan reminds me of the quilted covers in the motel you stayed at!!

  6. Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry, merry king of the bush is he...
See, even this Yank knows where to find one.
Take some raspberry, chocolate cake with you. You'll find him.

  7. I love tortoiseshell cats; loved the tree colours and oh! that cake!! Mum used to make the most delicious chocolate fudge cakes (always popular with the boyfriends!!). You are such a clever person.
Just wish I could go walking these days but even if I could, nothing very exciting seems to happen in our neighbourhood. lol

  10. Delores; I was happy with the cat, she purred as I scratched her ears and talked to her, very friendly.

Elephant's Child; I usually hear the kookaburras early, while I'm still deciding whether I should get up or not. Only from November to January, after that they seem to move on.

Andrew; my neighbour gets around in one of those "shoppers", so it may have been more than half an hour since she saw the koala, plenty of time for him to be gone.

Merlesworld; this is a first for koalas in my area, maybe he's a scout and will come back with family one day. the cake is delicious.

fishducky; those are my colours, I have variations of them in every room.

Joanne; I LOVE that you did this!! Thank you so much. I don't think kookaburras eat cake. But a slice would sustain me while I searched treetops. I haven't heard them for a couple of weeks now, they may have moved on already.

Mimsie; the cat was very friendly, for a while I thought she was going to follow me home, but she stopped at the corner. The cake is the first since my birthday. Do you have your Mum's Chocolate Fudge Cake recipe?

Becky; me too! It's playing along in my head now. Suddenly I'm six years old in Grade two.

betty; I can see them at the zoo, but that's not the same as one in my own neighbourhood.

  11. Those trees look fantastic. For a second I thought the first one was a wattle in full bloom - I almost started sneezing :-)

We used to find a few koalas in the trees around Victoria Park Race Course. When they atarted building the Grand Prix track, they decamped and moved to our neighbourhood (along with the possums!) so you could see them in the neighbour's tree occasionally. They are really hard to spot as they look like the tree and they don't move.

The patchwork cat is lovely. Aren't they cute when they come forward and want a tickle? My dog loves cats and they seem to sense that, so I get to tickle a few of the local cats and I never get tired of it.

How brilliant to have a square cake tin with a removable base. I've never seen one before but will keep my eyes peeled. And I'm impressed that you baked a cake in the heat. I found it hard to get enthusiastic about baking in Adelaide's summer and even Christmas baking was somewhat of a chore.

  12. Marie; this was the first square tin with removable base I've seen, although I've seen plenty of round ones. I'm trying to remember now which store I bought it in. Possibly Big W or Target. I always choose a cooler day to do my baking, today (Monday)is a cooler day, so I made chocolate fudge and three dozen mince pies. The kitchen smelled fantastic all afternoon.
