I am annoyed

I have neighbour trouble. Often it's the ground floor people, who sleep all day and wake up just when I want to go to sleep, banging doors, burning toast and setting off smoke alarms, I'm used to them and just read in bed until they quieten down.

This problem is the woman in the flat right above me. I don't like her, so I'm not going to talk to her.

Here's what she does, probably unknowingly annoying me, every night when I turn off the TV, turn off the lights and get into bed, she starts opening and closing drawers, walking back and forth in her noisy shoes, running some sort of roller sweeper or mop over her floors, and I just can't sleep through that, can't even read a book with that going on above my head.

So tonight, I'm making noise of my own. I'm sitting here typing with  music blasting, songs I know no one likes except me and I don't care if it annoys her, or anyone else.  mostly country music and a bit of 80's rock. If she says anything tomorrow, I may tell her why I did it.

Or not.

  1. Too bad the upstairs lady isn't in your place so she and the downstairs people could just annoy eachother.
Hope she gets the hint with your music, if not, hope it gives you some satisfaction.

    1. Arkansas Patti; I wouldn't live up there, it gets all the weather, freezing cold in winter and sweatbox hot in summer. There is no shade at all apart from a useless tiny awning over the window. And no air conditioning. At least I have that, thanks to my brother who helped with the cost.
I don't know if she could even hear the music, it seems extremely loud to me because the speakers are right beside my table. It did help calm my mood though.

  2. Sigh.
One of our neighbours really likes music. LOUD music. We can hear his car coming. The music is so loud that our windows often rattle. What it is doing to his hearing I shudder to think.
I do hope your neighbour quietens down - and that you enjoy your music in the interim.

    1. Elephant's Child; I've heard a few cars like that, thankfully none around here anymore. I enjoyed my music a lot, playing it loud and thumping actually calms me down. I slept like a baby from 2am to almost 9 this morning. If the neighbour repeats her pattern tonight it won't bother me as much. For a while.

  3. Oh brother! But we can thank weird work shifts.

    1. Sue; weird work shifts don't help, but around here not many people work. Most of us are retired, and the younger ones have mental and other health problems so they don't work either.

    1. Linda Sue; I have earplugs and would have used them if I hadn't been annoyed enough to "snap", hence the loud music which I hope irritated her, but probably didn't. I'm back to normal now and will cope with whatever noise she makes.

  5. While I haven't used them for some time, I found earplugs to be very helpful for such situations, but it does take time to get used to them. If she does mention your noise, do tell her why.

    1. Andrew; I still have plenty of earplugs left over from my days in the shoe factory, and would have used them if I hadn't been so annoyed I felt the need for very loud music. If she says anything I will tell her why, but her English isn't good (even after 20+ years in Australia), and once started, she can't stop talking! Last time she popped in "just to say hello", she almost didn't take a breath for two hours!

  6. I've used ear plugs to deaden freeway traffic outside the motel window, and they were totally effective. Heavy duty plugs, not wimpy foam plugs.

    1. Joanne; I have the earplugs I used in the factory, they work extremely well, I was just too annoyed and needed to make noise of my own just to let off steam.

  7. It's common for the upstairs neighbors to be noisy. I think the insulation between floors is often lacking. Our town home is connected to two others. When they slam doors or play music we can often hear it. Fortunately they are generally pretty quiet. We probably disturb them with our bickering from time to time.

    1. joeh; there is no insulation here between floors unless the upstairs tenant puts down plenty of thick rugs. This neighbour is quiet during the day, I only ever hear footsteps and flushing toilet, but when I'm ready to sleep, she is in her bedroom, right above mine, doing whatever it is that requires much opening and closing of drawers etc. in her noisy shoes. Mostly it doesn't bother me, but now and again my long-buried temper will act like a volcano.

  8. It's been a long time since I had apartment neighbors. But when staying in hotels for CasinoPalooza, I swear the other inhabitants were holding the Triple Crown in the hallways overnight. It's like they never put their kids to bed, but let them out for exercise.

    1. Val; I don't recall much about hotel stays from earlier years, but we had children ourselves at the time and tried to make sure they got tired out during the day so they would sleep at night. Perhaps that was the plan with those kids, run up and down the halls until they were tired enough to sleep? Except of course they should have done that before dark. Who knows what goes through people's minds.

  9. Welcome to my world.
I had a kid who played basketball late in the evening right here above my head. We have a park 5 minutes away on foot. Mother said, he´s allowed to do this by law till 10 pm (I got up 04:40 and needed to calm down, have some quiet time). Next parents who let their poor kid scream through every night in the bathroom, which is beside our bedroom underneath. Next TV-lady watching stupid love-shows right above where I sit now.
Now we have the stomping ones.
If we hadn´t bought (!!!argh!!!) this condo we would be gone to another place.

    Did the dumb lady complain?
Sorry, I had to giggle, imagining the loud music (not allowed here after 10 pm).
I´m sorry you have such douchebags, too.
And yes, no use talking to them, it would likely make it worse.

    1. Iris Flavia; our noise laws kick in at 10pm too, but often enough there is noise after that, sometimes people fighting inside or outside, then the police get called, but sometimes just people having a little get together and having fun, no one minds that.
I feel sorry for you having all that noise from other flats, the screaming baby and the basketball player would be the worst. The stomping ones should just take their shoes off maybe.

  10. Oh goodness, that not fair them making that noise. I've done similar to you in the past, way back due to the next door neighbour playing loud music, hence I did the same and turned the volume up and we live in separate houses in the street but it worked for me - let's hope it works for you...earplugs might help but it is hard to concentrate when others are so thoughtless.

    1. Margaret D; it's just one person, 99% of flats here are single occupancy, she probably doesn't realise I can hear every sound once the TV is off. I make sure my TV is not too loud, I sometimes go out the back door and can't hear it at all, then I go out the front door which is closer to the TV and still can't hear it, so I think it's okay.

  11. It is sad when people are so uncaring. Perhaps the lady above you does not realise she is disturbing you. Leave a short polite note.

    God bless.

  12. Neighbors can be an annoyance, that's for sure!
Smart of you to blow off steam---
now, as you say, you can tolerate the annoyance a little better for a while.

(Maybe you could send the Sisters up on the roof to dance over her head while she's trying to sleep! :)

    1. Fresca; I don't often need to blow off steam, but at least I can do it with loud music instead of smashing things like some of the neighbors do. I won't be sending the girls up on the roof, it's too high and they are so small.

    1. Rose~from Oz; welcome back. I don't think I'm used to living so close to people, even after ten years here. Before this I had a two bedroom single story unit with neighbours only on one side and they were very quiet. Before that I always lived in houses, with my kids, and big yards for space.

  14. It's so difficult to have noisy neighbors. Life would be much easier if they could build soundproof apartments.

    1. messymimi; it's public housing though, things like soundproofing etc just aren't in the budget and plenty of the neighbours have mental health people problems. Winter is usually easier because they shut themselves in, away from the cold.

    1. jenny_o; thank you. Most of the time I am serenity personified, I put up with all kinds of stuff, until that breaking point. Being retired, I can catch up on sleep during the day if I need to, so that's not a problem.

  16. I had upstairs neighbors that could wake the dead! Seriously. So, for about a week I would blast Eminem. After that, no problems. Now I have wonderful neighbors.
