Sunday Selections # 780

Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.

In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.

Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.

Walking home from the city (5 miles) one day when I had just missed the bus, I noticed many intersections were blocked off due to road works

these giant concrete blocks are hollow and will become the new storm water drainage along Glen Osmond Road

Heavy machinery was everywhere

this is a section of the old storm water drain lined with slabs of concrete

and another section lined with stacked horizontal slabs, not very stable and quite inefficient

I am surprised it has lasted this long but with much more traffic and heavier vehicles, it badly needs the upgrading

at the edge of the intersection of Glen Osmond and Greenhill Roads, these are the stormwater outlets that run diagonally under the roads, each is only about 1/4 or 1/3 the size of the big new square drain sections that are being laid.

here is some of the machinery in action, I hope it plays

closer to home I saw this window display in an upmarket secondhand shop, I wonder if the brass (bronze?) hare is grumpy because the cabbage behind him is ceramic so he can't eat it.

in the next window was this pretty ceramic flower

and these model houses. I used to collect things like this, but a smaller version and gave them away when I was moving here because I knew there would be no room to display them.

a little further along was this pretty cafe table, I like these much better than plain ones.

very close to home now, a new vibrant younger bloom next to an older faded one

and a sunburned deep red one.

home now and making coffee

I notice my old mug is cracked and stained with grey circles from the spoon as I stir in the sugar and milk

I may have to retire it and choose one of these instead

here is my new kindle next to the bigger, heavier old one

and once I had registered the new one, my entire kindle library of books loaded itself. I was worried about how long it might take to transfer them from the old one, no need for that at all.

this is my shadow getting in the way

when I wanted to photograph this shadow the next day

and here we see my favourite jelly bean, black ans aniseed flavoured

Oh no! they're trying to escape!

Get in the bowl!

  1. Sorry you missed the bus though a good walk and some neat photo finds. Love that part. Do you like the lighter smaller ereader better? Glad it uploaded everything. The cafe table looked neat.

    1. The Happy Whisk; depending on weather, sometimes I walk and other times I will sit the half hour waiting for the next bus. I do like the smaller reader, it took a bit of getting used to. If I had a garden with sitting space I might get a cafe table like that.

  2. Sometimes we see new thing when we have to take a slower pace.
Bet my wife would like your kitchen organization. If only we had somewhere to put it.

    1. Alex J. Cavanaugh; my kitchen organisation was necessary since the cupboard space is so limited. The rails and hooks are from Ikea and my son-in-law put them up for me.

  3. OOH! Black jellybeans! I'll take that instead of the walk, please. Looks like you have enough cups to last, in case the current cup wears out or gets broken.

    1. Val; I enjoyed the walk and the black jelly beans were my reward. What you see hanging there is only half of my coffee mug collection, there are just as many packed away in a crate in the shed/garage.

  4. I am not a black jellybean eater - I do like licorice though. Lovely walk, thanks for taking us. Makes me realise that I really should take more pictures of life.

    1. jeanie; I like licorice too and most often buy it instead of the jelly beans. I would love to see pictures you take on walks.

  5. Yes the video worked perfectly for me ...
I think that hare looks great, grumpy or not ...
    Pleased your Kindle uploaded okay.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend and have a good week too.

    All the best Jan

    1. Lowcarb team member; the hare does look great, but the price tag is a bit rich for me. I was happy the kindle loaded itself too. What a timesaver!

  6. A drain lined with paving slabs, lol.
The hare looks like a Gillie and Marc work. If not too much, I would have bought it just in case it is. One of their sculptures is in your Central Plaza.
The black jelly beans weren't going to last long enough to bother putting them in a container.
You have plenty of mugs to choose from.

    1. Andrew; there are several Gillie and Marc pieces in the city. If I win lotto I will buy the hare. The jelly beans didn't last long, but I bought more and am only eating a couple a day.
I have more than enough mugs with extras packed away in the shed/garage.
I think back when that drain was first constructed the city was much smaller with much less traffic, certainly not the buses and heavy trucks we get now.

  7. Black jellybeans have always been my favourite. And I love that hare in the secondhand store window!

    1. Debra She Who Seeks; I always loved the black ones as did my mum, my sister always took all the red ones and my brother ate what was left with no colour preference. The Hare is great and I wish I could afford him.

  8. 5 miles, wow. Sounds good! Poor bunny, that! And I lovetables like that, too. To women :-)
Oh, cop-overload, too? Ingo and I bought two each here... Oh, yours is green, too! I found licorice. Guess what Ingo is hooked on now...
    Happy Sunday!

    1. Iris; cop overload? Or cup overload? I do have too many cups but I like all of them. I'm glad you found licorice, it's good stuff! My favourite is the thick sticks of molasses licorice available in some health food stores. Not always an option since there aren't many health food stores near me. So Ingo loves it too? 😀

  9. Gosh I haven't had a black jellybean for a very long time but I do remember they are very tasty.
Love how the work is going on for the storm water, water should flow well when it's all done, and yes, the video played. You have a nice array of mugs there, R.

    1. Margaret D; the storm water drains will take a while to complete but will be a vast improvement over the original. I like my mugs, each one was purchased when it "jumped out" at me as I walked past shelves of them in shops.

  10. That was quite a walk, but you turned it into such a treasure hunt of sights! The hare made me laugh--sulking at a cabbage he can’t eat. And I agree, those café tables have so much more charm than plain ones.

    1. Veronica Lee; it is a fair walk, but I've done it several times over the years and takes me only about 40 minutes, so if I miss a bus I might as well walk because the next bus is 30 minutes away. The cafe tables are charming and sometmes they all have differently decorated tops, if the owner doesn't buy a matched set.

  11. That looks like a nice walk with good weather and sunshine. Quite a lot of road and drainage works, but as you said, hopefully it will all be more stable and efficient when completed. I like that cabbage vase or bowl in the thrift shop window!

    1. Steve Reed; It was a nice walk and better because I didn't have to hurry.I think the cabbage is a vase.

  12. I like the "Just a woman" mug. We too have a cupboard full of mugs and we really ought to have a purge. My Kindle is like your new one - I never had the original one. It is my second Kindle though because I dropped the first one and it stopped working. I bought a new one and was about to throw out the old one and - hey presto - it started working again! Maybe it was "stunned". I think I gave it away.

    :o)

  13. Black jelly beans...

Black jelly beans can be bad for you if consumed in high amounts due to glycyrrhizin, a compound in real black licorice that can cause severe health issues like high blood pressure, low potassium, and irregular heart rhythms. The FDA warns against consuming more than 2 ounces (about 50 beans) per day.

Heart and Muscle Issues: Excessive consumption can lead to serious conditions, including cardiac arrest, swelling in hands/feet, and severe hypertension.

Who is at Risk: The FDA advises caution for people over 40, especially those with a history of heart disease or high blood pressure.

Safe Consumption: While a few are fine, eating large amounts daily for over two weeks is dangerous.

Note on Ingredients: Not all black candy contains real licorice; some use anise oil, which does not carry the same risks.
