Sunday Selections # 786
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.
Charlotte's colour of the month is Sea Green:
From our local newspaper a few weeks ago:
"so the libs want us senior citizens to move out of our houses-to where, a tent in the parklands? Retirement homes are either full, too expensive or hundreds of kilometres from our communities." B.JWhoever BJ is, he or she makes a good point. Politicians would like older people in family homes to move out so younger people can have a shot at the property market, and buy a home to live in and raise a family. BUT, as BJ says, where are all the older people supposed to go?
Easter decorations at "my" dentist, these are hung along the reception desk front and get caught on people's handbags
This is on a table off to the side, so safer. And very pretty.
This is me walking home after my visit, it's flu season people! masks are a good idea. (Also I had left my teeth with the dentist for adjustment and would pick them up later in the afternoon.)
walking around the block, I notice this overgrown hedge is still taking up half of the footpath, just as it was the first time I saw it about ten years ago. In the foreground at right you can see the edge of the paved area which disappears under the hedge edge.
Yucca flowers! I had seen these in the past but not known what they were. Then I recently saw them on Steve's blog and learned that yuccas actually flower.
this vine is closer to home and new to me, I think it was planted last spring because the fence was bald for quite some time. My phone app says it is a "Madeira Vine" the bees love it.
"the bathroom needs privacy" said Gillian, so I made a curtain with a bamboo skewer and a pretty handkerchief
I also found my old Stargate mouse mat with calculator. I never used the calculator part but I did use the mat as an oversized coaster for a while.

The hedge is too far over. I'm surprised it has been allowed to remain so. Nice to see the redheads enjoying life.
ReplyDeletejabblog; possibly it is too large and too old to survive a massive cut back. I thought of sending the picture to local council, but most people just cross to the other side of the street if they need to so maybe I will just let it be.
DeleteWay to go on the nine drawers! Woohoo! That's wonderful. I love me a good declutter.
ReplyDeleteAs for wanting folks out of their homes so a new crop can come in. What the actual fudge cakes, Batman. No. Not up for anyone to decide that for someone else. Balls to that.
Love that purple curtain. So cute.
The Happy Whisk; nine down, nine to go. Then there's the wardrobe and pantry, plus the cabinets in the back porch although those last two are probably okay.
DeleteI agree with you about older people having to move. I know that if I had a house I would never leave, but leave it in my will to a family member.
I wouldn't want to see older people expelled from their homes. That's just crazy. But what I HAVE noticed is that many people have multiple houses -- ancestral homes, guest homes, vacation homes, that kind of thing. I believe in the US there are higher tax rates for second homes, to encourage people to release them back onto the market. Also, in the states, real estate investment trusts have bought huge numbers of homes as investment properties, and that prevents single owners from doing so.
ReplyDeleteI like the way the hedge is so carefully pruned, but yeah, it shouldn't be that far over the sidewalk.
Steve Reed; I agree that for those with multiple homes should be encouraged to sell whichever one they only use for "a couple of weeks over Christmas" or similar. Others who own multiple homes and are already renting them out to families should be allowed to keep them, because selling would mean families on the streets living in their cars. They could offer to sell the property to a long term renter who has been there twenty or more years.
DeleteIf that hedge got pruned back drastically it might die, but reducing the width a few inches every pruning might help over time, I think it would adjust to that.
Heh, heh, the mouse! Sorry about your skewered finger, but it's nice that you made a privacy curtain. At first I was worried about the toilet sitting on the "lawn."
ReplyDeleteVal; I was shocked when I skewered my finger, the pain was immediate. I'd been using a metal skewer to make the hole for the bamboo one and my finger slipped just as it broke through the cardboard layers. Toilets on lawns have been used as plant pots here, but mostly in far out rural areas.
DeleteWhat a varied set of interesting photos for us to look at today, thanks River!
ReplyDeleteDebra She Who Seeks; thank you.
Delete"The Scorpions motor cycle gang stalked through the worst nightmares of ordinary Americans". This line would worry me about the book before I even opened it. Was the writing very special?
ReplyDeleteHels; I'm not sure what would make any writing "very special" but the storyline hooked me from the beginning.
DeleteThe letter above the housing story one is a hoot; professional baby namers.
ReplyDeleteTrimming the hedge back to where it should be would ruin it, perhaps permanently. It should not have been allowed to grow over the path.
I didn't know yuccas had significant flowers.
The shells are very pretty.
Andrew; I agree professional baby namers is a bit ridiculous, there doesn't seem to be a need for them in my opinion, but thinking back to a movie about Hawaii's early days (Charlton Heston) a Chinese settler seeking fortune for his family consulted with another on names for his sons to ensure their futures would be profitable or something like that. I can't remember the title right now.
DeleteThe Yucca flowers are lovely aren't they? I like the shells but don't know just what to do with them, display and have to dust or just put them back in the drawer?
Andrew; the movie is "The Hawaiians"
DeleteDelightful mix of photos and stories.
ReplyDeleteThe dentist’s Easter decorations made me smile, and those yucca flowers are gorgeous.
Great job on tackling nine drawers.
Love those shells.
Veronica Lee; thank you. The Yucca flowers are lovely. I still have 12 drawers to sort and then the wardrobe.
DeleteHello blue hat! I got a new - also blue - hat at Hillarys, but took my red one home. I could not leave it there...
ReplyDeleteI did not have my cam with me... there was a doll house for free in the street - you´d loved that, I guess!
Oh. A mouse! I had a very intelligent one (with fur, feet and paws).
Beautiful shells. I need to declutter, too. Great calendar-page! I like the idea. Instead of being sad about having lost someone... be happy you had the person on your life.
I have one of those mouses and use it when using my old laptop! Fabulous it is R.
ReplyDeleteThe furniture is looking great for the redheads.
Love the flowers and that hedge needs cutting well back but then it the hedge would be bare for a long time till it grew again.
Good idea to wear a mask...
I remember Against the Wind with John English - old black eyes - in it. There were some awesome Australian history miniseries around then. I was very glad of masking when I got a cracked plate that needed repair during covid.
ReplyDeleteCripes, River - asking old people to give up their homes? There would be uproar in the UK if that was requested because the people who vote the most here are the older generation.
ReplyDelete:o)
