a visitor in my garden

Image
Look what I spotted while sweeping off my front porch. I raced inside for the camera and was lucky enough to find him/her still waiting when I got back outside. I zoomed in for a closer shot, but it came out fuzzy, and then the butterfly fluttered by on his/her way to the next blossoming tree.

Whimsical Wednesday #40

Image
Welcome back to Whimsical Wednesday! The day for a googled funny image to get you over the mid-week hump and sliding down into the weekend. Do you do this with your cheese? I just slice and eat...

and so it begins...

The migraine inducing sinus pressure. See those tiny white flowers just left of centre? Jasmine. Jasminus Polyanthus. (I think. I looked up the proper name once and I think that is it.)  If you click on the picture and enlarge it you'll notice all the fat pink buds surrounding the flowers and climbing higher into the tree. With just these few flowers, I'm already suffering, although not too badly. Once the vine is in full bloom however, I'll have to be very, very careful about opening the house. Not too early in the mornings, close up again about 4pm. The scent from these is released at dusk and stays heavily in the air all night and well into the morning. This particular plant is climbing a tree just over the back fence where our communal washing lines are.  Quite close to my back door. It means holding a hanky to my nose to filter my air as I walk to the bus in the mornings. I don't care how silly I look, nor do I care what people may think. I'll f...

donut? do not!

There's nothing quite like the mirrors in a fitting room to make you rethink that donut you were planning for afternoon tea.  And also to immediately regret every other donut you've ever eaten. In your life.  Along with assorted desserts, chocolates and last summer's truck load of icecream.  Last Saturday, after many years of putting it off, I finally went bra shopping. Well, why not? There was a sale, I could get more than one for a reasonable cost. In the intimate apparel department, there is a handy little touch screen thingy where you can enter your measurements to see what size you should be buying. I ignored that.   Pfft!!    I knew what size I was! I discovered very quickly that the style I've worn for the last century or so, simply doesn't exist anymore. There were similar ones, in the same brand, but not a damn thing in plain white. Okay, there were plenty of bras in plain white, but they weren't what I was looking for.  ...

Sunday Selections #86

Image
Welcome back to Sunday Selections! Begun almost two years ago by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock , now continued by me. There are almost no rules... 1. post photos under the Sunday Selections title 2. link back to me. This week I have photos of our Adelaide City Fire Station. Lovely red bricks standing out against a bright blue sky. Nice shiny sign. These big doors are where the fire engines come rushing out. I really like the unusual upper level design of this building. (I suspect the architect is the same one that designed a red brick, white trim office block I've previously shown. (in Grenfell Street).) 150 years of putting out fires in and around Adelaide. Thank you Firies. This is the training tower used to train the new men. Recycled water is used during training. Scroll back up to the first photo. See that glassed in section? Tune in next week to find out what's inside.

shimmery pink polish

Image
A long time ago, I wrote about the Avon lady who knocked on our door and was invited in by my Dad, who then bought for me a bottle of shimmery pink nail polish called Dawn Pink. I loved it instantly, even though I was never much into girly stuffs, being more of a beach bum, tree climbing type. When it was all used up, I kept that empty bottle for years. Recently, I was in my local chemist waiting and looking around while a prescription was being filled, and I spotted a very similar colour nail polish in a bargain bin. The shimmer is more silvery than golden, but it was only $2 a bottle! Well of course I bought it. And here it is on my short, broken nails.

what's in my handbag?

Image
Yesterday Andrew wrote about the possibility of acquiring a man bag to carry various personal items including pocket sized antibacterial gel. This product was new to him, but he sees the merits of carrying some at all times. I think man bags are an excellent idea. Andrew then asked, what do women usually carry in their handbags? Several commenters mentioned their contents, I decided to turn this into a blog post.   I emptied my current bag onto the coffee table and took photos. This is the stuff that hides in the small zippered pocket. A comb, bandaids, safety pins, spare usb, nail file, lens cleaner wipes, the stronger migraine tablets, and a spare camera battery. There's usually a tape measure in there too, I'd better find that and put it back in there. This surprisingly small pile of goodies is divided between the three main pockets.  There's a few things missing here too. A notebook, pocket pack of tissues, hankies, and the purse sized antibacterial...
