Sunday Selections # 729
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I join in as do a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us more often.
Elephant's Child has been taking a break and may or may not be participating this week.
Beginning with a couple of photos from before Christmas:
and look who is on board! My sister-in-law V and of course brother R too setting off on a surprise trip across country for her 70th birthday.
Finishing now with this month's calendar page:
Happy birthday, J!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely birthday trip for your sister-in-law, something never to be forgotten.
I like your childhood treasure, too.
jabblog; thank you. A trip like that certainly is unforgettable. I spun that yoyo for a couple of minutes just for fun, never did learn any of the tricks though.
DeleteThe Indian Pacific is much more fun than the plane trip from Perth to the eastern states. Better views of the land being crossed, more social life, better sleeping and more spacious dining. Of course if the potential traveller is retired, taking a longer time is a positive advantage.
ReplyDeletehels; I'd like to do that trip myself one day, but I think the price is beyond me right now, plus there's the cat...
DeleteThe train compartment looks like small hotel room!
ReplyDeleteMike; it does! I hope it is as comfortable as it looks.
DeleteThe trip across in the Indian Pacific would be a wonderfully, interesting trip. A good friend of mine, a few years ago, went on the Ghan, and she loved that particular venture.
ReplyDeleteI hope the twins Daddy enjoyed his birthday, and I'm sure they joined in with him in his enjoyment. :)
I hope the week ahead treats you well, River. Take good care...my cuddles to Lovely Lady Lola.
Lee; it would be a great trip with the many planned stops along the way for people to get off and see different sights. I have more photos to come.
DeleteI'm sure J is having a wonderful birthday with his girls. This week is promising to be a little cooler so I should be less "wrung-out".
We went on a train trip across the west from LA to Chicago. We booked what has to be the smallest rooms ever, about the size of our toilet enclosure on Amtrak. Your trip sounds wonderful. The menus were awesome.
ReplyDeleteOur Amtrak's menu read like the school lunch, and they ran out of most items (corn dogs were available).
Susan Kane; this is not my trip, I can't afford such a thing. It's my brother R and his wife V, for her birthday. it does look a wonderful experience though. Shame on Amtrak running out of menu items! That's poor planning.
DeleteWhat a great gift, and not a cheap one. You'll be able to meet them at Parklands, I think.
ReplyDeleteHow amazing to have a yo-yo from your youth.
Happy birthday to J.
Andrew; thank you, do you remember being 44? I didn't meet the train, I had no idea when they would be there and a side trip for all passengers was pre-arranged anyway, a bus trip to the Barossa for food and wine tasting. I don't know what to do with my old yoyo, none of the grandkids wanted it years ago. I'll wait and see if a yoyo craze starts up again when the twins are in school, maybe they can share it.
DeleteYou have such a lovely country to see. What a great trip.
ReplyDeleteJoanne; it is a lovely country even in the desert areas. I know R and V are having a lovely time.
DeleteWhat a lovely blue sky.
ReplyDeleteDora; we see that sky almost all year, sometimes with clouds. There aren't many days when we don't see any blue.
DeleteThat blue sky is a delight.
ReplyDeleteI would love to ride on a train again, especially one which is so nice.
Your old yoyo is quite a find. I never got the hang of them.
I wish many happy returns of the day to J.
messymimi; that blue sky is just beautiful but so common here I think we tend to take it for granted. I would love to take a long scenic train trip too, maybe I can save enough after the cataract surgery, but then I still have Lola (cat) to look after.
DeleteI never learned any of the tricks the yoyo experts showed us when they did school tours back in the 60s.
Gee what a great place to be and travel on the Indian Pacific and with an ensuite too - how wonderful. Happy Birthday to your son in law.
ReplyDeleteMargaret D; J is my son, not son in law, he's my baby boy and already in his forties! How can that be when I don't feel old? I'm sure my brother R and wife V are having a great time, though by now the train trip is over and they are staying in Sydney for a few days before moving on.
Deleteoh good lord..... i tried so hard to glean a crossword clue from the background of your yoyo photos..... even the sudoku is truncated..... argh!! Great photos (apart from the one you never turned around).... i particularly enjoyed the shadows on the wall..... very evocative!
ReplyDeleteArcticFox; welcome to drifting. That was the cryptic which I rarely try, I'm not that smart, though I do manage to work out one or two clues and have actually finished two of them last year. I don't even try with sudokus. do you manage both? The shadows on the wal were inspired by Steve Reed's blog "Shadows and Light".
DeleteParty-time, happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteHuh, this is "scary"! Ingo yesterday: Telly, The Ghan, Adelaide! I took some screenshots - sadly it could´ve been any train station, so it´s just train/landscape all the way to Darwin, pics to come!
Arty shadows and such a wonderful find with the yoyo. Mine was a cheap no-one that broke apart...
Iris; I hope J had a party or at least a special dinner, I didn't ask, there is a lot going on there and I didn't want to intrude. I once inquired as to the cost of a trip on The Ghan, wow!! Far too expensive for me. Sad that your yoyo broke apart.
DeleteSad when you feel you better keep out. My SIL does the same to me, I read you. Yes, reckon The Ghan is a "bit" higher by the price... To be honest... I liked the Outback better by car! It was interesting with the Indian Pacific, yes. Too much food I never could eat and some people I could only shake my head upon. Certainly also nice and humble ones but nothing I´d give money for again.
DeleteThe yoyo I shared with my little Brother, no surprise it had a short life-span ;-)
Wonderful blue skies. We were treated to a bit of blue too today - even if the sun is setting now already (5.40) it was so nice! Congratulation with your son ... it's strange to have such old "babies". I remember an old friend of mine telling me with a hint of terror in her voice that her oldest son had just retired! I'd like a train journey acroos Australia. Maybe if we start saving now, we would have money enough for hubby's 70th birthday - I doubt it, as it probably would require no travelling at all until then. love taht you still have your yo-yo.Mine has one the way of earthly goods years and years ago, and I also never learned any fancy tricks.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte; we are so used to our wonderful blue skies, that it seems strange when winter comes and sometimes the sky is grey with clouds. I remember a meme I read online "it's weird being the same age as old people." That's how I feel. I hope one day you might manage a trip to Australia.
DeleteHappy Birthday to your son. I'll bet he had a party to celebrate. That's a fancy train, for a memorable trip. I like your yoyo, and even if you just leave it in the box, it's a great keepsake that surely somebody will want as time goes by. "Retro" items have a way of becoming popular again.
ReplyDeleteVal; I hope he had at least a small family party with a cake and a beer. It is a fancy train and the trip across the country isn't cheap, but I think it is worth the cost as the passengers get to experience several pre-planned outings along the way. I've put the yoyo back on its shelf, maybe a future descendant will be happy to have it.
