Sunday Selections # 731
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I join in as do a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us more often.
Elephant's Child is still taking a break, the excessive heat is not kind to her.
Beginning today with more of R and V's holiday trip:
they visited the Kalgoorlie gold mine, also known as The Super Pit
I can't quite make out what that sign says, okay, I enlarged it, It says Hannan's North Tourist Mine. You'll notice everyone had to wear the orange safety vests.
some big machinery there
and some REALLY big machinery, see the giant bucket scoop off to the right?
Here's another look at it with R and V satnding inside it. My brother is six feet tall.
one section of the mine
and a view from a bit further around
by enlarging this one you can better see the machines and pipes, this is where they are digging two new holes, R says at this point they were 600 feet down and were expecting to find gold at 800 feet, I believe the white pipe pumps air but I'm not exactly sure on that.
from the Super Pit they went across South Australia to Broken Hill, where Lead and other metals were (are still?) mined, and also this is where part of that famous movie "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" was filmed. What's your favourite scene from that movie? Mine is the desert night time campfire scene.
These signs explain the derrick in the picture above and tells about the Kintore Shaft
Much fun and laughter was had aboard the "Party Bus" although I am not sure this was part of the Broken Hill experience. The Indian-Pacific did make a stop at Adelaide and passengers were taken to the Barossa (wine making, grape growing area) for some wine tasting and this might be from that day.
Definitely Broken Hill now, this person was dressed as one of the Priscilla characters. At first I thought it was a statue,
but he moved around with the crowd.
inside the Hotel were these giant high heeled "Priscilla" seats, I hope they were comfortable.
a very short video of the entertainment that night, I hope it plays.
and another video showing the town of Broken Hill, the sound you hear is the wind, it was quite strong apparently. I hope this one also plays.
Back at home now (me not R and V)
on a recent Monday Public Holiday I had to walk several blocks to the "Servo" (gas station, service station) to buy my daily newspaper and while I was waiting to be served I noticed pies in the warmer that were rectangular instead of square or round. They were called "Traveller's Pies" and I can see how a thinner, longer rectangle shape would be easier to hold and eat while driving. These are meat&gravy pies, most often eaten with tomato sauce, but some prefer them without.
Here you see me proving that my knees do still bend as I help the girls splash in the leftover puddles after the swimming pool was deflated,
and the next day daddy J inflated the pool again, the sides and trees fill with water once the hose is connected and turned on.
and a wonderful time was had, the girls do love water, probably as much as I did when I was young, though I had a beach within walking distance.
Playing under the water spout, this runs from the hose which is connected to the pool.
I think there was a little bubblebath mix in the water
and of course they had to splash Daddy.
Little children love water and it's so relaxing for them.
ReplyDeleteThe bucket scoop is enormous and the mine is getting deeper and deeper.
jabblog; the girls are very comfortable in water which will help when it is time for swimming lessons. I don't know exactly how wide and deep the Super Pit already is, but there is still gold to be found in it.
Deleteoooh Kalgoorlie..... amazing.... as a devoted fan of the Aussie Gold Hunters series, i feel i know this area well, having never been there - looks vast and amazing.
ReplyDeleteArcticFox; I have never been there either, though I would like to one day. I have never watched the Aussie Gold Hunters series, didn't even know about it. I don't watch a lot of TV, I find the ads annoying, so I watch the news and weather then switch to dvds.
Deletei dunno - the aussie gold hunters and deadliest catch are two of my most watched series...... i highly recommend, but then.... i also play pokemon, so who am i to recommend anything?
DeleteArcticFox; I don't think that show is even on Australian TV, I'll have to check. I have heard of The Deadliest Catch, but haven't watched it.
DeleteDid you get to hike to the bottom of the mine? 😁
ReplyDeleteMike; Me?? No. I'm not on this holiday trip, it is my brother R and sister in law V celebrating her 70th birthday. I don't think hiking to the bottom is allowed anyway, for safety reasons.
DeleteIt's great that Broken Hill has apparently capitalized on its fame from "Priscilla," so much so that it's a draw for drag queens! Pretty much EVERY scene in that movie is my favorite scene.
ReplyDeleteSteve Reed; I'm happy they are doing this from the movie, anything that brings tourists and money to the town is welcome in my opinion. I'm happy that you like every scene, it's a great movie.
DeleteIt is always windy on the tailings mountain at Broken Hill in the morning, and normally the wind disappears in the afternoon.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't really see or hear anything about Priscilla when we visited, oh wow, 2007.
It's good to see the girls love water.
Andrew; I've heard Broken Hill is windy and maybe I'll get there myself one day. I think the Priscilla show was a cabaret/dinner show and maybe you missed it by being there at the wrong time, or maybe it just wasn't done when you were there.
DeleteI'm glad the girls love water.
What a fascinating tour your brother and sister-in-law had.
ReplyDeleteThe meat pies here are shaped very differently and usually are what we call Natchitoches (nack-a-tish) style, meaning meat with tomato sauce and very spicy.
It's a delight to see the girls playing in the water.
messymimi; it was a fascinating holiday, I think they finally arrived home yesterday, so about a month all up with travelling. I've never heard of your Natchitoches, very spicy isn't for me though, I like flavour but it has to be mild on the spice.
DeleteThe girls play in water almost every day in summer, but always late in the afternoon when the sun is on its way down so they don't get sunburn. When I was outside with them it was only ten minutes.
I hope the giant high heeled seats in the hotel were NOT comfortable. That way men know how awful it is for women to wear very high heels in real life.
ReplyDeleteHels; I don't think men will ever realise unless they wear the high heeled shoes for a day. I have never worn high heels, even my wedding boots were only a two inch heel and I think I wore them twice after that day and then gave them to a thrift shop.
DeleteOh, how did we miss this?! We just found a huge Haul Truck behind a fence near Tom Price and luckily all was given in metres... I think we did miss a lot.
ReplyDeleteIn Kalgoorlie we saw "Elmo in Grouchland" and celebrated Ingo´s Birthday. One of my fav scenes is where , now, who was it.... stood on the roof in a costume... seesh, I can´t even remember the song! Reckon must re-watch Priscilla today!
LOL, that party-bus! Of Silverton I only remember the statues they had, looked Mexican to me! Barossa Valley... so German.
Ha! You made me search the (sadly too small files) - 1999 in Alice I took a pic of "Queen Desert Resort Motel". OK, I´ll watch the movie! And I want those shoe-seats (and a bigger condo with that).
Oh, yes, FINALLY is one of my favs, too! You made me all want to pack and go again! I miss those clear nights in front of the car, or better by a safe (!) fire.
Thank you, this was great!
No! No tomato sauce! But yes to that pie! In Perth we saw a German restaurant in a mall. Guy really was German and claimed pies are made from "rests". Poor man that, I thought, go back to Germany and stop making us a bad nation. Bet he was but jealous no one really wants his boring food...
Oh! Still warm enough for splashing time? 1C here and nearly lunchtime...
Thank you, this was big fun. Priscilla is right here and will pop in after Die Maus!
Iris; yes, warm enough for splashing, 30C when the sun was going down that day. I don't remember either which one was on the roof of the bus, I will have to watch it again too. I'd like to see the picture you took in Alice.
DeleteI don't like tomato sauce on pies either, they have enough gravy. With that German and his pies made from "rests", I wonder what "rests" are??
30C, nice! 1C here. Ack, I am so done with the cold.
DeletePic is on tomorrow, and it was Felicia :-) Was good to see the movie again. Today is bye to Lucy for now...
In Germany we had meat scandals, especially in Doner - rotten meat-scraps. That dumb man was referring to that. We just went on, no need to comment to him - his loss, right? I just have a pie moved from the freezer to go to the fridge and for lunch and dinner in the airfryer :-)
Felicia- Guy Pearce, a favourite of mine in other movies and tv series.
DeleteI must admit that I have never seen "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and have no intention of ever doing so. As for the white pipe at the bottom of that gigantic opencast mine, I believe it contains Foster's lager to keep the miners hydrated during hot weather.
ReplyDeleteYorkshire Pudding; Foster's Lager??? I don't think so. Most men I know drink VB (Victoria Bitter), or more modern craft beers for the younger set, many of the new craft beers are non-alcoholic too which is a good thing. I wonder if Shirley would enjoy the movie? I think the pipe is for ventilation and cooling.
DeleteA lot of fun there for the little ones, they do love to splash the water around, don't they!
ReplyDeleteThe pit is amazing and so big, the colours are great too.
Margaret D; the girls do love water. The Pit is the biggest in Australia I think, possibly the world? But I haven't researched it so I could be wrong.
DeleteThe gold mine is interesting. Our towns sprung up from lead mining, which is not at all open, but also fascinating. We were not allowed to go down in a tour, but on "family days" the relatives could walk around inside the surface buildings. Like see the locker rooms the miners used, and where the processing started in big concrete water pools. There is a museum that shows videos of mining activity underground during the 60s and 70s.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the girls had a fun time splashing around with you and their dad. The meat pies make me want to try one.
Val; I like our big gold pit, though I haven't seen it personally. We have lead mining here too, in Broken Hill, also zinc and copper but not sure exactly where. I knew once but have forgotten. Our mines get tours too but going down into the pits is not allowed for safety reasons.
DeleteThe girls love playing with dad when he finally gets home from work, he has a new job closer to home now, so he gets more playtime these days.
The meat pies do look delicious, but like all foods there are good ones and bad ones.
Water and kids ... always a hit.
ReplyDeleteI love the rectangular snacks for drivers.
Charlotte; some kids are actually afraid of water, my sister would never go into the water past her knees as a child, I don't know about now, but I think she still avoids it.
DeleteRectangular pies would be easier to hold and eat than our regular round or square one.
There is some big machine out in the world.
ReplyDeleteDora; there is and I love watching giant machines at work.
