Sunday Selections #733

Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.

In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.

Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.

Beginning with this month's calendar page and we are back to my favourite theme, Sugar Skulls, Day of the Dead decor

A liitle bit about the calendar and oops, my feet, down below the table there. (Socks with Sandals! ooh-la-la!)

"Calaveras,or sugar skulls, molded from sugar paste and decorated with elaborate patterns and bold colours are a vital part of Day of the Dead Celebrations. Their bright designs and sweet flavours are offered to visiting spirits and arranged on altars to honour loved ones. For our 2026 Day of the Dead: Sugar Skulls Calendar we are highlighting this traditional art with thirteen colourful illustrations of Sugar Skulls and other traditional Mexican Day of the Dead designs by Saira Polutak, a talented Artist out of Norway. We included all the major US and Canadian holidays you need to keep your year on-track as well as lunar phases and important religious observances. Whether you're looking for a reminder of a loved family member's life or simply want a splash of traditional Mexican designs and colour on your wall, we know you will love counting the days of 2026 with Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls."

I believe the candles and candle holders fit with Charlotte's colour of the month: Carmine

This year the pages have extra drawings on them 😀

This girl was very excited to see Santa had arrived

And this girl too.

Santa also delivered a larger swimming pool

with room for everybody to splash around at once

I wore my usual red "Tree-Rex" t-shirt and when hand washing it the next day,

the water turned a nice Carmine shade, this is why I can't put the shirt in the washing machine.

Can you all see the "E" at the back left there? Behind the Dragon pencil cup. That was in my Christmas stocking along with some edible yummies, like macadamia shortbread and other things.

The big magnolia tree here is flowering but most flowers are way up high so we only see the underside of them

Across the parking space is this smaller version, about the same height as me, also flowering,

so I was able to get a closer photo, you might see this one has bees in it,

I hope this plays, it's the bees busily harvesting from the pollen rich centre.

another video, this is the tree someone complained about and the bees got smoked out, here is proof they have returned, I think for the third or fourth time, they know a good home when they see it. 😀

and one more video, this is another beehive in another tree two blocks away from where I live.

TWO beehives in one neighbourhood! We are so privileged. The person who lives near this one has put signs on either side "warning: beehive take care".

with some of our days being super hot lately and with more of the same to come, I have been making small ice cubes  to drop into Lola's water dishes to hopefully keep the water drinkable for her.

Spotted this van while walking home from a thrift store

heavily stickered:

"Shitbox Rally" ? I'm going to have to look that up and see what it's all about. www.shitboxrally.com.au

Back windows with advertising

this sticker on the left of the back door

and this on the right back door

I broke another one of my favourite breakfast bowls, these were sold in Coles supermarkets years ago as Christmas Pudding bowls, in the pudding shape and suitable for boiling, I bought four and use them to microwave my morning porridge, or for soup. Now I have only two left after this one slipped out of my sudsy fingers and bounced off the edge of the sink onto the floor. Twenty years I've had them.

finishing with this year's Christmas Cards and a drawing I "stole" from the internet and coloured. Two pine trees tastefully decorated and a flashy palm tree "she's my cousing from Las Vegas"

  1. Wonderful photos! I enjoyed looking at all of them. I've never seen a magnolia tree or blossom in real life. It's too cold here in Canada for them. I loved all three of your bee videos! Yay, bees!

    1. Debra She Who Seeks; thank you. This wasn't supposed to be up until Sunday, I shall revert it to draft until then.

  2. I love the magnolias. I had a tree once when I lived in the south, and they smell amazing! I'm so happy the bees have returned. We need them! I wonder if a local beekeeper would come and take them to his/her hives. Great photos of the girls. - Happy New Year, River!

    1. Magical Mystical Mimi; I can't smell the magnolias, perhaps ours aren't as heavily scented. I would prefer the bees stay right here, there are plenty of flowers for them and I plan to buy a few dwarf lavenders for them, since I seem to be unable to grow any other type of flowers here. Happy New Year to you too.

  3. We have socks-day today, huh? LOL I did it on purpose to honor someone.
Love your calendar - I again had to remind my Brother of Mum´s "date". And what did he do?! Went across the street, bought flowers and put them on the grave, sent me a pic and thanked me.
If I find such a calendar here I´ll buy him one (and myself). It´s the same with Dad and both of their Birthdays, too. I´m a naggy old Sister, I guess.
Cute head-deco - and wow, Santa did a good job - was he there in person? (I had to "endure" that and it was frightening!).
Oh. At least you washed only that. Ingo once threw such a shirt in with white.... well...
To the E and the candle holder, wow! Wonderful you captured bees at work.
Excuse me, someone complained about bees?! No bees, no life... Maybe pot out some sugar-water out for them, too.
Cute, you serve Lola iced-water! We have 10 cm snow here.
You really confused me - I looked it up - green-white-red for Italy. Great thing they do, though, supporting cancer-research and not supporting going to Mars.
Sorry for the bowl. Ingo broke my fav one, too.

    1. Iris; I always wear socks, it's more comfortable for me than sweaty leather sandals and the sandals last longer, those in the picture are at least 15 years old.
I love the calendar for all the bright colours, I have birthdays listed in my diary and neither of my parents have a grave. Their ashes were scattered in the ocean so they could "float back to Germany", it's what they wanted.
Santa was NOT there in person, well maybe, but he sneaks in while all are asleep.
I did once wash that t-shirt in the machine, luckily only old towels were in with it and they did look a bit pinkish, but none were white so no damage was done and now every year I wash it by hand.
Some people do complain about bees, usually someone new that moves in and is afraid of things that fly or sting, I don't know the reason, but really if they are afraid, they just need to not walk near the tree.
I did the iced water for Angel too when he was still with me and when I had the water bowl out for the birds I would put ice on very hot days, but I had to remove the bowl because the big white cockatoos would poop in it .
I didn't look up the rally car yet. The bowl is not so important, I still have two more the same.

    2. Ingo and I decided for no grave, too. Sweet idea your parents had.
Lucky kiddos with no Santa, he really scared me (I was good! ... I bet...)
I was afraid of bees, too, but knew how important they are. Once I was stung - not funny - and they come to you when you´re on the balcony.
Now that I´m old I stay calm and they fly away, all good!
The what??? Why would they poop in the water?! My frog-bowl is still here, it´s too cute to be thrown away...

  5. I do like your many selections this week. Maybe the bees will be allowed to stay this time, they are such helpful creatures.

    1. messymimi; thank you. I think the bees will be okay for a few years and hopefully if someone new moves into an empty flat a neighbour might explain about the bees.

  6. Lola's ice cubes look refreshing. As does the pool brought by Santa!

    1. Val; I always put ice cubes in pet water if the temperatures get high like now, 40C+, and used to in the bird water when I was feeding the white cockatoos, but had to stop feeding as the birds multiplied to ridiculous numbers AND they were pooping in the water.

  7. Don't tell anybody, but smoking out bees does not work that way. You might make the bees leave temporarily, but they'll be back. Smoking out is used for harvesting of the honey, not for removing bees ;)
Thank you for using my colour - I see why you hand wash that Tree-rex ;) We might have had reddish sheets, teatowels and diapers occasionally because I'm not keen on hand washing.
Sad about the bowl, some shapes just fit you, I have only one left of mine now - more clumsy I think.

  8. Lovely to see the photographs you've shared.

Seeing the swimming pool pictures was lovely ... fun to splash around in a pool ... mind you you wouldn't want to do it in the UK at present! It's very cold and a lot of the country has snow!

    Have a good week.

    All the best Jan
