Sunday Selections #782

Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.

In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.

Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.

walking home from a dental appointment recently I noticed this pile of concrete blocks

and a badly dented bus stop shelter

somebody really rammed that thing The concrete blocks were a low fence, and I recalled hearing several sirens screaming along Fullarton Road a few days prior. For this much damage, I assume the "rammer" was a fairly large truck and hope no one was injured.

Next to the bus stop:

this is all that remains of a very large tree which I posted about a few months ago, you might remember I showed the break where a large limb had broken during a very windy storm.

Apparently someone had now deemed the entire tree unsafe and it was cut down 😢

a mural I spotted in the city while waiting at the lights to cross the road, I don't know who the dark-haired men are, but the blond in the middle is Shane Warne, an Australian cricketer, now sadly deceased.

Back on home ground, the bees which I recently happily posted about as returning to their tree hive, have once again been smoked out. I stood there and cried as a couple of bees flew around close to the entrance but would not go inside. I had been planning to plant some lavender for them in my small patch, but not at all sure I will do that now. Maybe in the spring. For other bees. Maybe a bee keeper came and collected the hive?

After a year of neglect (no watering for about 11 months) this monstera showed its appreciation of a drink by sending up a new leaf, here it is half unfurled

and a bird's eye view, had to stand on tippytoes for this.

too late for February's colour of the month, this crepe myrtle on the way to Woolies has burst into such a froth of blooms I could barely see branches. The bees there were having a grand time.

visiting a friend recently I noticed these Christmas Cookie themed spatulas

and a spoon as well.

this "stinking-to-high-heaven" mess was dropped, I'm guessing when that strap broke off a carry bag, on the footpath beside my garden patch. It hadn't been there when I checked my mail box the previous afternoon, so must have been dropped after that and I didn't see it until I went out to water afer breakfast the next day.

The tiny black specks you see are shiny flies, there were dozens of them and hundreds of ants too. I have no idea what the items are in the container but they might have been doughnuts. Such kind and considerate neighours I have eh?

I got a bucket and garbage bag and a pair of rubber gloves and scooped the whole mess into the bag, tied it off, flies and ants included and dropped it into the nearest bin, then sloshed a couple of buckets worth of water over the slimy footpath area.

a tree in "no-one's" yard has burst into bloom, I don't remember what it is but it is pretty

she is also growing small hot (HOT) chillies

and this evening primrose was covered in bees though I photographed only one

Closer to home,

I like this driveway where the bricks are laid herringbone style with a straight edge. Eye candy.

  1. I hate to see trees being cut down. Your photos are beautiful.

    1. Linda's Relaxing Lair; I do too and that tree seemed perfectly healthy, it just had one huge limb crash down after a very gusty storm. It is/was out front of a retirement village so maybe someone decided it was no longer safe.

  2. Yeah, that bus stop sure took a beating! And too bad about the bees. I hope the pro who smoked them out was also able to collect them and give them a new, safer hive somewhere. And yes, wouldn't those crepe myrtle blooms have been perfect for February's colour of the month!

    1. Debra She Who Seeks; the bus stop will be repaired or replaced by local council and hopefully they will also rebuild the low fence as well. I very much hope the bees were taken to a new hive and not just killed. There are more crepe myrtles blooming everywhere here now, most are a paler pink and a few are white.

  3. The half unfurled monstera shows that nature can make impressive, artistic pieces as well as humans can. Great colour and great shape!

    1. hels; I love nature's art, the unfurling of leaves is great and other things like tightly curled tendrils, and tiny shoots appearing along thin branches. I must find my macro shot of mould spores on a leaf and repost it.

  4. I can't even recognise Warne in the mural. I guess the other two are important cricket players, one Indian and one English.
That is sad about the bees.
    Herringbone brickwork always looks impressive.
Naturally the person who dropped the mess didn't pick it up. There is always someone else to do that.

    1. Andrew; I'm guessing Warne's picture was copied from a photo taken in his younger years. I hope the bees were taken to a new hive and not just killed off. I like herringbone brickwork much better than plain paving. If I knew who had dropped that mess I would have put the bag on their front porch! The stink was really awful.

  5. I love the peppers. Bummer about the wasted money/food. Always a shame to see that. Wow, about the bus stops.

    1. The Happy Whisk; I don't know what plans "no-one" has for the peppers, but she enjoys the "heat", same with both my sons who also grow their own. The wasted food wasn't mine thank goodness and since the pack split open and the foods were on the ground I guess whoever dropped them decided not to try and salvage any. The bus stop will be repaired or replaced by local council.

  6. This is absolutely a wonderful post. The photos are excellent too.

  7. Thank you, River, you made me laugh straight away! Concrete blocks coming all the way from the dentist!!! Hahaha!!! Thankfully I have a handkerchief here to clean my glasses!
    (Ingo´s teeth.. oh, well...)
Pic to come who went into our Caravan Park - nearly same damage, small car... also next to the bus stop, must be magnets, these things!
    Oh, poor tree...
    Great mural (join Sami tomorrow?)
Nooooo on the bees. So sad. No bees, no food, no life. What dumbhead did this?
Yah, tippytoes.. I read you! You can do that sitting, too, good for the heart! In Perth (Madeley) I collected some videos on this here (might be necessary to log in).
    Oh!!! Cute spatulas and spoon!!!!
Great neighbour... as in you really are. And good to see a bee.
"herringbone" hrgh. Ingo eats Herrings.... Not today, though, have a great Sunday.

    1. Iris; I'm happy I made you laugh. Does Ingo need dental work? I hope it isn't as expensive as here. I won't join Sami's Monday Murals, this one has already been seen now.
I am very sad about the bees and hope the hive was just moved to a safer place, maybe with a beekeeper. Tippytoes is easy for me and I am always pointing my toes and twisting my feet sometimes walking on my toes or on my heels, it's good to keep the blood moving.
I eat herrings too, but not often, I buy the ones in tins with tomato sauce and spread the fish on toast, usually in the winter.

  8. Shame about that tree being cut down, but if it's not safe best thing to do.
The bees lost their home, such a pity.
    Nice collection for Sunday, R.

    1. Margaret D; that tree seemed perfectly safe to me, maybe a tree expert was called in and decided otherwise. I am sad about the bees. Thank you.

  9. Poor bees. I hope they found another home. I do with people would clear up their own mess and not leave it for other, more responsible citizens (you!) to deal with.

    1. jabblog; I am so sorry about the bees and hope they were taken by a beekeeper to a new hive. Too many of my neighbours are slobs but not much is outside on the footpaths apart from the rubbish bins because they are too lazy to put them away after the trucks have emptied them, they claim it is more convenient to just leave them out and of course there are stray tissues, lolly wrappers, cigarette butts. Once I found a $20 in my garden.

  10. I love the unfurling leaf, and the chili peppers. My son Genius grew peppers in pots on his balcony in Pittsburgh a few summers ago. He made his own salsa. Got a really good "crop." They must be hardy plants. I would think you have better weather for them there than he had in Pittsburgh.

    1. Val; chillies are a hardy plant, much like capsicums (bell peppers) which grow anywhere. I remember readng about Genius and his crop. Will he also grow edibles in his new home? carrots? onions? peppers?

  11. A nice collection of photographs.
Shame about the tree being cut down but sometimes it is necessary to do this.
I do like those Christmas Cookie themed spatulas!

    Have a good week.

  14. I would think it would be illegal to smoke out bees since they are so endangered.

    1. Alex J. Cavanaugh; it should be, but this is a complex of 110 units and there is always someone who will make a fuss. I hope the bees were removed this time by a beekeeper and taken to a new home. In previous years the hive was destroyed a couple of times since I've been here and the bees eventually returned.

Such a shame about the tree being cut down, but safety comes first.
    Losing the bees is sad.
I really like the new monstera leaf and those bright chillies.
