Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words/prompts are supplied by River and can be found here

This week's words/prompts are:

1.property  2.barrels  3.dingo  4.down  5.silent  6.doubt

Charlotte's colour of the month is Ocean Twilight

Here is my story:

“Get off my property!” the old man yelled in his thin, quavering voice.

Brandishing a rusty old shotgun, he threatened to “let both barrels loose on ya!”

The younger man opened the door of his jeep and waved a white handkerchief. “Grampy! It’s me! Sammy!” He stepped down slowly and took off his hat.

“Can’t be,” said the old man. “Sammy is just a little boy.”

“I’ve grown up Grampy, I went away to school and now I have come home.”

“Everyone went away,” said the old man, lowering the shotgun. “Everyone left me. Even Julia and Sammy.”

“I’m Sammy,” said the younger man. “Julia was my mother and she died from the Covid. But I came back Grampy, I’m here now.”

The old man stood silent, his faded eyes, once a deep ocean blue, showed doubt as Sammy walked towards him. Sammy reached for the shotgun and gently took it from old Dave’s hands, gladly noticing it wasn't loaded.

“Remember the dingo puppy you let me raise when it’s mother was found dead on the road?”

“You named it Jack,” said Dave, looking up at last. “Sammy? You really here? I’m not dreamin’?”

“I’ve come to help, Grampy, we can get the home patch growing again, we can start with vegetables and a few chickens. I have a friend with me, her name is Margaret. Can she come inside out of the sun?”
