Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words/prompts are supplied by River and can be found here

This week's words/prompts are:

Here is my story:

As soon as the bus pulled up in the parking bay, people got up out of their seats, eager to feel the sun and sand and paddle in the water. Gordon took hold of Cassie's bag of dolls and plastic containers and helped her down the steps where a makeshift boardwalk had been placed for wheelchairs so everybody could access the water if they wished. The bus held no wheelchairs today, but a couple of families with bbies in prams were happy to use it.

Gordon knew that Sally and Doug considered him reliable and trusted him enough to help some of the others, while they kept watch on Marjorie who often forgot where she was, and Alan who was determined to mosey along the jetty a bit and talk to the men fishing down by the end. Sally noticed and nudged Doug, then nodded in that direction and Doug did a fast walk to catch up with Alan.

Denise held one of Cassie's hands while Gordon steadied her on the other side. Lucy stayed with Marjorie who had plonked herself down onto the soft dry sand well away from the water. There was an old campfire nearby, a ring of stones filled with ashes, some of which had spilled over into the sand. Marjorie said to Lucy, "I once saw a lot of ashes like this where a huge old Villa had burned down, it left a mountain of ashes, the fire trucks couldn't save any of it."

"That's very sad," said Lucy, who was wondering if she could coax Marjorie down to the water for a foot paddle. Alan had reached the fishermen now and wastalking to them about fish, how he had fished as a child, but never caught a single fish. Cassie couldn't wait to get her shoes off and kicked her feet trying to make them fall off, she loved to stand right in the shallows and feel the firm sand wash away from under her weight.

"It's a bit like quicksand," she said to Denise, " I've always thought that must be how it feels at first, but I'm glad it isn't real quicksand." Denise had her own shoes off by now and was kicking the small waves, clowning around a bit getting her socks all wet because she had forgotten to take those off.

Sally waved at Doug who waved back an "Okay", indicating that Alan was behaving himself, she twisted the cap off a new tube of sunscreen and headed towards Cassie and Denise to apply another coat to their arms and faces. Cassie was ready to start building sandcastles with all the differently shaped plastic containers set out in sizes and already filling them with damp sand. Denise wondered if it was too soon to buy icecreams and looked around for a kiosk.

Everybody stopped and looked over when a wild cheer came from the jetty as one of the younger fishermen drew up a wired basket with crabs and small lobsters in it. "They look like a good feed," said Alan, "will you cook them on the beach?" he was clearly hoping to be invited for a taste, but had to be content with a "No, these are going home with us to be part of a birthday barbecue dinner, my younger sister is ten years old today."

  1. I love your continuing story about these quirky old persons. I hope they do get an icecream.
