Wednesday's Words on a Friday

Image
The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems. The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind. If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words. This month the words/prompts are supplied by Elephant's Child and can be found here This week's words/prompts are:   1. cold 2. rugmaker 3. guiding 4. Thursday 5. forever 6. both  and/or:   1. farm 2. lights 3. club 4. end 5. moth 6. away Here is my story: It is a cold Thursday afternoon as I sit typing this, using a list of words provided to me. I’ve just arrived home from the shop and as I locked the door behind me, it began to rain. “Good timing,” I said to myself. When this goes to air tomorrow, I will have lived here in th...

A snippet from today's newspaper

Not even a complete snippet, just a few words: "Donald Trump hailed himself as the "healthiest President ever"....."boasting that his former White House doctor Ronny Jackson "loved looking at my body...it was so strong and powerful." My thoughts: Are you kidding?? There is nothing healthy about you!

Sunday Selections # 596

Image
Long ago, Kim of Frog ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.  A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.  Nothing rude or vulgar though. And we don't mind at all if overseas bloggers care to join us. The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I occasionally join in as do a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to them and have a look. Starting with some cartoons from the newspaper: "It's the best of both worlds. We're charging 'em more and giving 'em less."  (Big Power (energy company) Fat Cats) "Nah, you're wasting your time, mate. No one can afford to drink nor drive." (Policeman waiting to do a breathalyser test) and there's this, happening in the red dusty desert of the north. But what is it?  I'm glad you asked... "A World record has been shattered with more...

It was signed “your loving Mother”. I stared at it for quite a while, noting the handwriting was the same as alw...

irritating accents

I don't mean spoken accents, I think they are great.  What I'm talking about is reading accents.  I'm currently reading an e-book in which the writer tries to convey the accent of the area and its people. For instance: when someone is saying "owner" it is written as ownah ; "reader" becomes readah; "never" becomes nevah,  and so on throughout the book. Walkah, foreignah, ovah. I find this extremely irritating. Readers tend to read in whatever accent they themselves have grown up with, so correct spelling should be used instead of the cutesy made up accent.  It just interrupts the flow of the story when the reader has to mentally pause at each accent.  If people naturally say "nevah" instead of never, then that is how it will sound in their heads even when written as never.  When I get to the end of the book, if there is a link to either rate the story or contact the author, I may make this suggestion to him. And quite possibly never ...

Drop in to them and have a look. this is one of the ANZAC memorial biscuit (cookies) tins I mentioned a few weeks back and at the other end of the shelf, the black one complete with cobweb hanging from the top and over the C  and some of the pictures on the tin a different set of pictures on the green tin and another cobweb. I should probably clean more often. this is my kindle which I recently dropped (YIKES!), see the top left hand corner where the letters don't show now? It bounced off that corner ...
