Wednesday's Words on a Friday

Image
The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems. The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind. If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words. This month the words/prompts are supplied by Elephant's Child and can be found here This week's words/prompts are:  1. the elephant in the room  2. as busy as a bee  3. as happy as a dog with two tails  4. chicken hearted  5. a wolf in sheep's clothing  6. cat got your tongue  7. having a whale of a time  8. ants in your pants Here is my story: In the past, I always enjoyed cleaning my home. The kids would be in school, (well, three of them, the baby would be crawling around amusing himself) and I’d put o...

hooray for plumbers!

They are here right now and using a video cam to locate the blockage and possibly see where it is from, since four flats all empty into the same main sewer pipe. The noise of the pump clearing the pipes is quite loud, but I'm used to it because they have been here twice already and this is the third time.  I just went out to check and they are all done after working steadily for an hour, the blockage was quite large and it was grease from cooking, paper towels (kitchen paper) and baby wipes.  That omits me 100%, I never tip cooking oils or other grease down any drain, ever. It gets tipped and/or scraped into a freezable container such as an empty ice cream or yoghurt tub, and stored in the freezer until rubbish collection day, when I haul it all out and stuff it in the wheelie bin. (dumpster) Residue in the cooking containers gets wiped out with paper towel which goes into the bin. Without mentioning any of the other neighbours, I know where the blockage came from and wi...

the plumbing saga continues...

After my new best friends, (ha ha) the plumbers, left on Monday , things appeared to be finally fixed. and then the upstairs neighbour flushed her toilet and mine began to do its gurgling sucking noises again. I threw myself off the nearest cliff  fisted my hands and mentally screamed NOOOOO!! Of course I didn't immediately call them back, but waited to see if the issue would settle down. It didn't so I phoned them and let the know that coming back was a possibility, then I had a phone call from the Housing Officer who asked if things had been resolved. I told her about the continued gurgling. Tuesday I went on a road trip with my brother to visit our sister in the mid north town of Port Pirie, it's her birthday this month and she will be 76. All the way home I wondered if I would find a flooded bathroom when I got back home. I didn't and all seemed to be well although the gurglin was still happening, until a few hours later when I had to "go" and flushed th...

Plumbing Update

As you all know, I had an overflowing drain problem in my bathroom, which is also my laundry and the toilet is in there too. Plumbers were arranged on Friday and arrived on Saturday, pipes were reamed out and tree roots blockages removed as much as possible. All was well by Saturday evening.  For a while.  Sunday morning my toilet began making the usual gurgling sucking noises that indicated things were not well. I hoped it would settle down, after all the pipes had been cleared, right?  It's Monday morning now, 4:31am as I type this and I have been up since 2am which is when I woke to the sounds of the drain overflowing.  Again!  I've never seen so much sludge (and poop too) and what appears to be noodles from chicken noodle soup. I don't eat chicken noodle soup.  I laid newspapers to soak up as much of the mess as possible and gingerly stepped around and over to rescue things I'd need when bathing and washing my hair in the kitchen sink.  I'll...

Sunday Selections #721

Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.  A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.  Nothing rude or vulgar though. And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us. The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I join in as do a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look. Wisewebwoman has also been joining us more often. this month's calendar page, I wasn't able to find a Sugar Skulls/Day of the Dead calendar for this year. Our Victoria Square Christmas tree, the same as every year for quite a while now, with its red and gold bows, the gold at least is a bit glittery. street decorations were minimal Rundle Mall had a giant inflatable Santa-with-camera surrounded by some small trees in my own neighbourhood this was the only house decoration I could f...

Beginning on my front porch: a spider has made his or her home in this potplant there is the quite large entrance hole someone has been trying to break into some of the garages down behind the flats. I don't know what this is, but isn't it pretty? It's growing over the fence by the garages from a house on the next street. white agapanthus against a brilliant blue sky in my front yard my white geranium is blooming too though the flo...
