the plumbing saga continues...

After my new best friends, (ha ha) the plumbers, left on Monday, things appeared to be finally fixed. and then the upstairs neighbour flushed her toilet and mine began to do its gurgling sucking noises again.

I threw myself off the nearest cliff fisted my hands and mentally screamed NOOOOO!!

Of course I didn't immediately call them back, but waited to see if the issue would settle down. It didn't so I phoned them and let the know that coming back was a possibility, then I had a phone call from the Housing Officer who asked if things had been resolved. I told her about the continued gurgling.

Tuesday I went on a road trip with my brother to visit our sister in the mid north town of Port Pirie, it's her birthday this month and she will be 76. All the way home I wondered if I would find a flooded bathroom when I got back home. I didn't and all seemed to be well although the gurglin was still happening, until a few hours later when I had to "go" and flushed the toilet only to find the water filling the bowl and not draining away. Again.

Then upstairs neighbour flushed again about an hour later and the floor drain began overflowing, but thankfully just water spread across the floor, no stinky sludge this time I guess that's progress of a sort, but in a couple of hours when it's daylight I will phone Housing and ask them to create a work order and have the plumbers come back today, Wednesday.

Since I don't have any mopping up rags left, nor enough newspapers, I'll pull out the thinnest, most threadbare of my old sheets and rip that up to use on the floor once they finish.

This situation is getting a little ridiculous. I am actually afraid to use the toilet.

UPDATE- things just got worse and the plumbers haven't arrived yet

good thing I have a strong stomach, this stuff is about an inch thick, maybe a bit more the patch is about two metres (yards) long.

Nice Health Hazard 😧

I REALLY hope they find out why this is happening and where from. They have cleaned the sewer pipes close to me twice already!

  1. HUGE sigh. I suspected as much when I saw that you were commenting early again. I hope that the trip to see your sister went well at least and that this time your loo woes will finally be fixed.

    1. Elephant's Child; the trip was long and tiring, since we also drove around several country towns I had never seen. I was very surprised at the positive change in my sister, happy and smiling and eager to talk. A big change from the last couple of visits.

    1. Charlotte; the drains have been clleared twice in the last week, so it's a surprise to find it still happening. If you see my update at the bottom, you'll see what I am dealing with. Be glad you can't smell it.

  3. I believe the gurgling is a sign of a partially blocked drain. My main bathroom basin gurgles and I know there is a partial blockage.

    1. Andrew; get it fixed before you have something happen like my photo in the update at the bottom of my post.

  4. Maybe they can use the camera this time to see what is causing this. I hope you had a nice trip with your brother, and visit with your sister.

    1. Val; I certainly hope they use a camera, the cause MUST be found as the sewage upsurge is happening again, see my update.

    2. More yucky liquid and some actual poop now, most of the floor is covered and how do I clean it when more just keeps coming? Using those famous words "not happy Jan"

    1. Joanne; someone better have one soon, since I wrote the update, four more gushes of sewage have happened and a large part of the room is now covered. I'm going to have to get in the re with bucket and spade and start scooping because there's no sign of the plumber yet!

  7. For the love of God can they not fix it properly? Apart from anything else all these callouts are costing a bundle in time, hard cash and useless work? I am so upset for you. Can you report to the department of health? You could catch something. Seriously.

    1. Wisewebwoman; what needs doing is the replacement of the cracked pipes in an area that isn't easily accessed with machinery which is a big job and the paperwork for that takes days or weeks because everything must be properly reported and assessed all the way to the top of the chain. Meanwhile even more has been gushing out of the drain and the whole bathroom floor is covered. I have no hope of cleaning it while the stuff keeps coming out. I'll be washing myself in the kitchen sink again.

  8. First, I'm happy that you had a nice visit with your sister. Now for that plumbing issue. Not only is it disgusting it's also a health hazard. I sure hope they get that all straightened out because that is ridiculous. Have they gone upstairs to talk with your neighbor? I am so sorry you're going thru this. It's a nightmare. They should put you up in a nice hotel until they get it fixed.

    1. MMM; I'm happy that my sister is well and much happier than on the previous two visits.
No one has been to talk to the upstairs neighbour but me and she swears ahe never puts the wrong thing down the drains and I have to believe her, because who can really tell where all this literal sh*t is coming from. One of this afternoon's gushes brought up a few wads of kitchen paper.
I know it's a health hazard and I mentioned that in my email (with pictures) to housing, I'm being careful to wash my hands a lot. Putting me up somewhere isn't so easy, I have the cat and can't be taking her litter tray and other stuff to a hotel where she will cover everything with cat hair.

    1. Margaret D; it does look disgusting and smells much worse, but I seem to have become used to it. After all, this has been happening since last Friday night.

  10. I don't know how well this would work. A friend of mine who lives in a Trust house in Grange had a shower that was out of action for a couple of months ( the plumbers had downed tools halfway through the replacement job and never finished it). She eventually got onto her local MP and it actually paid off. Politicians sometimes do have a use!

    1. Barbara; it's on my list of things to do if the plumbers can't do a job that ends the flooding.

  11. That is disgusting, you poor soul. Is there a higher authority you can involve as the people you're dealing with don't seem to have any sense of urgency about your situation?

    Poor you. That looks terrible.

  13. I feel for you and can't imagine what you're enduring. Sounds like there are some serious issues with the pipes or with the venting (plumbing has to be vented to work properly) or a combination of both. The only time I had something like this happen was when a root invaded the line going to the sewer... thankfully, since there wasn't a floor drain, it came up in the bathtub, which made a stinky mess but at least was contained.
