Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write, a story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

Here is my story:

Camille kept one eye on the clock and one on the doorway as the newest of the amateur speakers was stuttering his way through his speech. 

She'd heard one of tonight's speakers was to be a famous author, there to guide and encourage the wannabe young writers through their first public appearance. They were to say a few words about their book/manuscript and get a feel for audience reaction.

The emcee had announced a small extension of the proceedings to give Ms. Maddie Kelsey** a little more time to arrive.

Most of the audience had lost interest at that point, with a few whispers that maybe Maddie Kelsey wasn't coming at all. 
Perhaps her name had been used just to get bums on seats.

They were clustered now around the marble-topped buffet table where coffee and sweet creamy cakes were laid out in abundance. No one paid any more attention to the stage where the young stutterer had faded to a halt, twisting his hands anxiously.

Camille noticed the fog outside begin to condense and decided she'd waited long enough. Meeting Maddie Kelsey would have to happen some other time. 
She left the hall, started her car and headed for the highway.
