Fire in the Hills! Run for your lives!

Heard news early yesterday of a fire at Cherry Gardens that was declared out of control and moving fast.

A neighbour said he could see the big clouds of smoke from his upstairs window, so I took my camera and got photos.

This morning I woke up to a blanket of thick, stinky smoke outside and some was inside too, having come in via the air conditioner overnight, so I turned that off right away.

This morning, after a downgrade overnight, the fire has roared back to life and is heading in the general direction of Bridgewater and the South Eastern Freeway.

Gulp! My daughter and her family live close to that area!

I texted her this morning and learned they have been ready to evacuate since yesterday but haven't left yet. They will, of course, if they have to.

Damn, here come the tears.

  1. Awful, awful, awful. And made worse because I believe it was deliberately lit.
I hope your family can stay safe.

    1. Elephant's Child; it was deliberately lit and police have arrested one man they caught running away. T assures me they are safe and will leave if they have to. They have lived in the hills for many years now and are always prepared.

  2. I haven't even heard about it. I'm sure your daughter will be cautious.

    1. Andrew; I'm surprised you haven't heard, it was on ABC news this morning and even Scott Morrison mentioned it during the speech he was giving. Daughter and family are always cautious, set up their escape plan the week they moved in over 20 years ago now.

    1. Joanne; I'm in the city so I'm safe, but all those in the Hills areas need to be aware and take necessary precautions. Many have already been evacuated for other areas, south of where my daughter lives.

    1. Dora; thank you. Fires are the scariest thing for sure, when they are raging in the country. Many are evacuated from where the fire was and as it moves others are being told to go when they can. For now my daughter and her family are safe, but they are ready to leave when it becomes necessary.

    1. Kathy G; was still raging late in the evening, but a very welcome rain brought things under control, although there are a few hotspots still being watched in case they flare up. They're in isolated places the firemen can't get to.

  7. Those idiots...brainless clowns who deliberately light fires should be thrown in jail and the keys tossed away!!! They get no sympathy from me!! There are too many fools in this world!!

I hope everything settles down soon, River...I hope your family remain safe...I hope everyone remains safe and the fires are quickly extinguished. Take good care...very good care...my best thoughts and wishes to you and yours.

    I hope

    1. Lee; then man they arrested running away from a newly lit patch is 60!! You'd think he'd know better at that age. He should have been dragged to the front line and made to fight alongside the trained firefighters.
We had plenty of rain last night so most of the fire is out, just a few smouldering spots here and there. My family is safe.

  8. Oh my gosh! That is so scary! I'm sure your daughter is monitoring the situation, ready to get out if need be. Your sunset photo did turn out well, though.

  9. Goodness me, it's dreadful - hope you can breathe ok.
When you see smoke such as that you just don't know if it's coming your way - hope your daughter and family are ok..

    1. Margaret D; I did have trouble breathing, the smoke and smell got into my home as I was closing doors and even with fans blowing on high speed it hung around in corners and I doubled up on the inhaler dose a few times. The sinus headache was the worst part, but I eventually got to sleep and woke up to clean air.

  10. Oh, scary. Good that your daughrter and her family are prepared. Fire is unpredictable, and deliberally lit, what are they thinking!

    1. Charlotte; there is nothing scarier than uncontrollable fire racing through the fields and gullies. In our hot, dry country, those who light fires deliberately should be punished more severely than they are.

  11. Oh this is terrible River, I hope your daughter and family are safe. Deliberately setting a fire deserves the full punishment of the law. Fingers crossed for you and family.

    1. WWW; define "full punishment of the law", as far as I know the punishments are nowhere severe enough. Daughter and family are fine the fire didn't get close enough, although they could smell smoke.

  12. Oh my, there is little more frightening than a fire. That smoke is unbelievably thick. Do stay in and hope the fire doesn't affect your daughter's family or their home. Please stay safe.

    1. Arkansas Patti; that smoke certainly was thick, it got into my home and hung around in corners, even with the fire being so far away from the city. A couple of families lost their homes, but no lives or animals were lost.
