Help please?
I do not have much understanding when it comes to technical problems. Usually I ask "no-one" for help, but she doesn't know what to do this time.
My old printer developed a problem where the paper feed was jammed and began ripping the paper as it fed through.
I bought a new printer, same brand, same model. Plugged it in and for a few minutes was able to print a few pages.
Now it continually tells me it is "offline" and won't print at all. I followed online advice to the point where it suggested removing the printer then adding it back. So I clicked on "remove" then clicked on "add printer" and then the instructions lost me. I suspect now the laptop thinks I don't have a printer at all.
Is there anyone who can explain this all to me in words a complete idiot can understand so I can plug in my printer and use it.
AFTER I'd "removed" it (printer or driver? I don't know) I noticed a line that said "change printer status, which would presumably take it from offline to online, but I don't want to try it in case I muck up something else.
I am in need of a new printer and cannot find the same to replace it. Now I am thinking it might not work if I do. There was a time I was very technical but now I just stare and try to remember. Actually I need a whole new computer. Bless your heart and good luck.
ReplyDeleteGranny Annie; I was lucky finding the exact same printer, but now I wonder if I should have bought a different one.
DeleteI feel for you but cannot offer any suggestions other than turning everything off and then on again. I hope someone can give you some help.
ReplyDeletejabblog; turning off and on and doing a restart works for computers, but not for printers. I always turn everything off at night anyway.
DeleteI wish I could help, but I am a bit illiterate and printers always eff me up.
ReplyDeleteBob; I am a lot illiterate when it comes to computers and their accessories, but I have a genius daughter who usually helps me.
Deletejabblog's advice is sound, and then do press that "Change printer status" byutton. It does not work now - can it get any worse? You can ALWAYS turn off everything. This was the wery first thing I ever learned about computers: If you botch up, close everything. Most problems reset when you turn it back on ... I have done much crazy stuff ever since, and never ever have I killed PC or printer above what - turn off - count slowly to ten - turn on again - could not help with.
ReplyDeleteOne thing more to try. Turn off everything, pull connecting cable from computer to printer, turn on computer, replug printer and turn it on.
DeleteCharlotte; I did try disconnecting and reconnecting the printer but that didn't work. I will go through all the instructions again and hope the laptop recognises the printer. I like to print out copies of my stories.
DeleteIt sounds as if it is trying to connect to Wifi. Which most printers default to now. Echoing jabblog and Charlotte (MotherOwl).
ReplyDeleteElephant's Child; and my wifi modem is on the cabinet right beside the table. If only the old printer hadn't jammed itself up....
DeleteWords you can understand? HIRE A COMPUTER GEEK TO FIX THE PROBLEM.
ReplyDeleteThe Laptop Surgeon is based in central Adelaide and will visit your home. You could at least ask for a quote. Tel: 1300 477 747
DeleteYorkshire pudding; I have considered that but they aren't cheap. I'll give it another try or two myself. Then I'll email them, I hate talking on the phone.
DeleteHave a few alcoholic drinks before making the phone call. That should embolden you Elsie.
DeleteI would used YP's suggestion.
ReplyDeleteJoanne; it is a good suggestion.
DeleteOur local library helps us with this when it come to techie. Free! I don't know if your library has something like this or not.
ReplyDeleteDora; my local library is too far away.
DeleteHope you can fix it yourself. I'd just reboot laptop, pull plug out from wall on printer after turning it all off and back on again after 15 minutes and start again. Printers retain a memory sometimes, certain ones do.
ReplyDeleteGood luck.
Margaret D; all the usual reboot, unplug and start over things didn't work, but all is good now thanks to "no-one".
DeleteSorry, I am bad at this. It sounds very frustrating. Hope you find help!
ReplyDeleteIris; it is frustrating. With "no-one's" help I've learned to do a few things on my own, but this is beyond me. she has said she will come out one day next week and look at it and maybe fix it.
DeleteThe process will vary depending on the computer you have, so I can't offer any suggestions without more information. Can you tell me what type of computer it is, whether Windows or Mac, and what model of printer?
ReplyDeleteSteve Reed; I have an ASUS laptop and a Canon MG3660 printer/scanner. Genius daughter "no-one" has said she will come out next week and see if she can fix it for me.
DeleteIt's Windows, I don't like Macs.
