Sunday Selections #776

Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.

In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.

Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.

the redheads are reunited at last: Gillian, "I missed you so much"

"we have a lamp now! and a table"

"Mum made them for us"

"Come back inside and see what I brought you"

"Christmas dresses!!"

"We love them 😀 thank you Aunty N"

Riley: "I'm a (Christmas) Tree standing under a tree"

This is one of our public phone booths out on the street

Looks a little beat up, it's had a hard life

But here's the best part, free calls for everyone to anywhere in Australia.

Stepping up and up

and up again

to clean the filters in this contraption

all done, time to push the table back under the window

almost there

and back to normal

Charlotte's colour of the month is Carmine and I found a few more examples:

the seat covers on some of our buses are close to carmine

and so is the small tin which I have had for years that once held chocolate covered hazelnuts

and now holds my Christmas Bracelets

in other news, sad news, my kindle has died, with just over 400 books that I didn't yet transfer to a hard drive  😢😢

Will not turn on and will not charge up. I am bereft.

  1. You'd be hard pressed to find a public phone like that anywhere in America.

  2. Those dolls are so darn cute and their new Christmas dresses are ADORABLE! I can't remember the last time I saw a public pay phone here in Canada. And condolences on your Kindle dying -- that's a lot of books to lose, alas.

    1. Debra She Who Seeks; thank you, I love the little dolls. It seems public pay phones aren't common anywhere anymore except here and I don't know about smaller towns, only the big cities. But they are funded by Telstra which is nationwide so I would think every small town would have at least one.
I am sad about the kindle, I was planning on taking it with me when I travel to visit my sister next month, now I will have to carry a heavier book and only one. I'm wondering if there is anyway to retreive those books, it must have a hard drive inside but I can't see how to pull it apart and even if I could I still don't know how I would transfer the books.

    1. The Happy Whisk; thank you, they are very cute, "no-one's" best friend is very crafty with knitting and crochet. They've known each other since they met while working in the same supermarket as teenagers.

  4. Those doll are too cute. I haven't seen a phone booth here in the US in decades. Have a nice day today.

    1. DVArtist; thank you, I love my little redheads, though I don't "play" with them as much as I used to. It's a shame phone booths aren't still around, they could be used as small community libraries for people to swap books.

  5. Love the redheads’ reunion, so warm and joyful. The public phone booth is a charming relic, carmine pops beautifully everywhere. Sorry about the Kindle loss, that’s a hard blow.

    1. Melody Jacob; the redheads don't like being separated, they travelled long distances from different places to be here and have declared themselves "sisters". The kindle will be missed a lot.

  6. Such festive Christmas dresses! They put me in a holiday mood for next Christmas! My dad worked for the phone company when it was Southwestern Bell, before it became AT&T. One of the highlights was when I was around 9-10, and he brought home a shipping crate from a phone booth. We laid it on its side in my next-door grandpa's backyard. It wasn't solid. More like 1x8 slats. We made a "tank" out of it, to play in with neighborhood friends. All boys but one. Late 60s, early 70s was a great time to be a kid!

    1. Val; the dresses are so nice! The shipping crate sounds like a lot of fun, it could have been so many things besides a tank, depending on imagination. I had the 50s and 60s to be a kid, in the 70s I became a mum.

  7. Pay phone are free?! I can't remember the last time I saw a payphone here in the US. When I worked for AT&T, I repaired payphones for a few years. It's amazing what people can do to them when they're mad at the phone company.

    1. Mike; the payphones didn't used to be free, but several years ago, instead of removing them all they were converted so anyone who needed to call for help or whatever could do so, like homeless people, or someone escaping an abusive situation and so on. Even a person who ran away from home might want to call their mum at times.

  8. SWEET! The orphans are intrigued and are jealous a little bit, though jealousy suits them for only one minute , then on to other things. Does anyone under the age of forty know how to make a phone call on one of those weirdos?

    1. Linda Sue; I knew your orphans would like the dresses, just as my redheads get a little jealous of your orphans pretty dresses. I think everyone here of all ages still remembers how to lift a receiver and push the numbered buttons to make a call and those that don't get shown or learn by themselves. Most have mobile phones of course, but sometimes they go flat and need charging, so thephone booth is handy then.

  10. The free phones are handy to check if you phone is working correctly.

I suppose you've tried to make the Kindle work by a very long press on the power button. If you buy e-books from Amazon, you can just retrieve them from your account to a new Kindle. Is that possible with where you obtain your books from? I had one Kindle die after maybe three years and I replaced it with a second hand one I bought online, which was heavier than my old one and I wondered why until I turned it on in dim light and realise it had an illuminated screen. It must be eight years old or more now.

    1. Andrew; I hadn't thought of that aspect with the free phones. I will try a longer press on the power button but I'm not hopeful since the "charging" light doesn't even come on when I plug it in. I used to get books from Amazon, but for years now it's been BookBub (owned by Amazon) and mostly the free options and I don't know where to find them anymore on the Amazon website. They were just light reading, nothing educational and I'm sorry to lose them but mostly because I will now have to carry heavier paperbacks with only one story instead of a lightweight kindle capable of holding 2-3 thousand. 14 years was a good run and eventually I will get a new one, but not until I get through the two dozen real books waiting to be read.

    2. I just tried holding the "on" button longer and it didn't work yesterday but it did today!!! I'm so happy 😀😀👍I have plugged it in to charge up and the yellow light came on and will change to green when it is fully charged. And the index page is showing now.

    1. Margaret D; It's a short stepladder and I have often used it but after that fall last November (that long ago already?) I was wary and careful, but I also think I won't be doing that again. I will ask a taller, younger relative to do this for me. The oldest of my grandosns is almost six feet and always happy to help out.
      The redheads are very cute.
