Sunday Selections # 812
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.
passing a stand of geraniums a few months ago I noticed several leaves were tinged red and pink
this one shows the green veins through the pink
as does the next bush along, the one in the lower right corner is almost the smoky rose of Charlotte's colour of the month.
closer to home this shiny leaved bush is growing through a fence, my phone app tells me it is dogwood and I shamelessly picked a sprig which now lives in a jar of water in my kitchen, though several leaves have dried and fallen off. Some of the leaves also echo Charlotte's Smoky Rose colour.
in that same yard is this beautifully coppiced fig tree, I love those twisty branches. By now it will be fully leafed out, but I can't go and check because there is a lot of jasmine up that way.
Waiting at the bus stop more recently I was able to capture the sun through the Jacaranda tree.
Let's activate the time machine now and take a trip back to about 2012 or maybe 2011 and see a few photos:
of the 33rd annual "Toy Run" where every year groups of Bikers collect toys and decorate their bikes and set off from a point in the city (this one began at Glenelg) and ride along Glen Osmond Road up into a designated hills area, where the toys are delivered, sorted and eventually are given to children who otherwise wouldn't have Christmas gifts.
Of course Santa makes the trip too, who else is going to hand out the goodies? I believe there is a big picnic barbecue that happens there too.
One of the bikes taking a break.
Ready to come back to the future?
Ooops, there's a glitch and we are stuck in the past.
This is the bridge over the Port River, (at Port Adelaide) I had a photo of it opening to allow a tall masted yacht through, but can't seem to find it.
here is a closer shot of the signal box
and under the bridge the original wooden pilings that once supported a smaller bridge
This is the Australian Maritime Flag, I only know this because about a month ago I was in a car that drove by a large building with two massive versions of it hanging either side of the front entrance, so when I got home I googled those colours and learned something new.
These seagulls were bunched around several picnic tables at the Fisherman's Wharf where the Fisherman's Market used to be ( we're still stuck in the past here) eagerly snapping up every single crumb dropped accidentally or purposely by those eating lunch.
more seagulls on the canvas deck cover of one of the small boats.
halfway across the bridge, looking into green water, this transparent blobby things are jelly fish. There were dozens of them.

I love Santa in the sidecar! Bikers here in Canada do those Toy Runs in Autumn too -- it's usually their last big "group event" before having to put their motorcycles away for the winter season. And wow, you got some nice shots of the geraniums' foliage too!
ReplyDeleteDebra She Who Seeks; thank you, it's great to hear the Toy Run happens in other countries too.
DeleteMe he emocionado porque mi madre adoraba los Geranios. Tenía la terraza llena de macetas bellísimos Geranios. Un abrazo
ReplyDeleteNuria de Espinosa; my mother also loved geraniums, she always planted some wherever we lived , because they are reliable, (they grow everywhere) sturdy and colourful.
DeleteFlowers, toys and waterfront: you covered a lot.
ReplyDeleteAnvilcloud; thank you, I used to get out and about a lot more, but travelling everywhere by bus got to be tiring as I got older. I should make the effort a bit more often.
DeleteThat's great they collect toys for kids.
ReplyDeleteAlex J.Cavanaugh; thank you for popping in and I agree it is a great thing to do. My older on rode along with them one year, before he lost his licence.
DeleteThese photos are beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteLinda's Relaxing Lair; thank you.
DeleteI may have driven over that bridge and I never knew it was a lift bridge. It would be interesting to see it operate.
ReplyDeleteI think the flag is called the Red Ensign.
Andrew; I have seen the bridge opening only once but it was interesting to watch. Thank you for the flag name.
DeleteThe seagulls waiting on the old Fisherman's Market used to be seemed to have claimed the land as their own. They know from experience where to quietly wait for the picnic scraps.
ReplyDeletehels; seagulls are smart when it ocmes to free food.
DeleteSo were my sons when they were students :)
DeleteWonderful selection for Sunday R. Love those leaves they are ever so pretty.
ReplyDeleteMargaret D; thank you. I love the leaves and have since seen more in other parts of the city
DeleteTo blooming! Here finally the leaves fall off in the city. In my backyard it´s still green.
ReplyDeleteTo bikers! To be honest I hardly met stupid ones! If so, very young, testing what their bikes (not themselves) can do, risking lives. Others helpful and with a big heart :-)
Sweet Santa & helpers! Didn´t know about the flag. But sure about the seagulls :-)
Iris; here leaves are bursting into bright green on may trees and flowering trees have zillions of bees. I believe most bikers are sensible people, the young ones do test the limits, but soon learn, unless they have serious accidents, which happen to even experienced bikers. I didn't know about that flag at all, never noticed them on boats until I saw the huge ones by a building recently.
DeleteI like the fig tree.
ReplyDeleteMike; thank you, welcome to drifting. I love that tree too, the age, the shapes, the sturdiness of it, it's just beautiful.
DeleteYour selections are excellent.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if we have such a motorcycle toy run, but there are several groups which collect and give out toys here. The firefighters parade through each neighborhood on their trucks with Santa on top of the biggest truck giving out candy. They collect new toys to be distributed and the Food Bank truck follows, picking up donated non-perishable food items. Maybe I'll be able to get a few pictures this year.
messymimi; thank you. I'm very glad to hear that a toy and food collection happens in your area, so many people would otherwise have to do without.
DeleteI can clearly see the jellyfish -- very cool. That dogwood is unusual and not like any dogwood I've ever seen!
ReplyDeleteSteve Reed; I had never seen so many jellyfish at once, there were dozens of them. My phone app may be wrong calling the bush a dogwood, I will check next time I go to the nursery area of the big green hardware store. I googled dogwood and google showed me many trees, but none like this bush.
DeleteI love your photos and have slowly started to blog again. I've missed everyone.
ReplyDeleteCindi; thank you. I hope you manage to catch up with those you miss.
DeleteUhh, I think jelly fish are had to chatc on photo. You did well.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte; with so many jellyfish all at once I was sure I'd catch at least one visible one.
DeleteSo green>
ReplyDeleteDora; it's Australia, the cities around the coastline are green but the interior (outback) is red and dry, very dusty. Very hard to live out there, very little water.
DeleteThe colours in the geranium leaves are beautiful, and that fig tree is amazing with its twisty branches. The Toy Run looks like such fun, especially with Santa along for the ride. And wow, jellyfish under the bridge!
ReplyDeleteVeronica Lee; the geranium colours are beautiful and I see that every year. The toy run is a very special event and I am glad to see it every year. The jellyfish photo is from about 13-15 years ago, I hope they are still there.
DeleteFun to jump in the way back machine! Loved those leaves.
ReplyDeleteThe Happy Whisk; I should jump in the way back when machine more often.
DeleteI'd love to ride along. I'll bring bakes!
DeleteI like the old wooden pilings under the bridge, nice that they’re still standing from the smaller one. The jacaranda with the sun coming through at your bus stop is a good shot too. And thanks again for the tips you gave me on my blog!
ReplyDeletehttps://canalsandcitrus.blogspot.com
Diana; I like the old wooden pilings too, they were left as remembrance and also because seagulls and pelicans perch on them, and they are home to many barnacles and small fish feed around there too. The sun through the jacaranda was just in time as the bus was pulling up.
DeleteI appreciate the beautiful flowers
ReplyDeleteRuby Rose and the Big Little Angels 3; I thought you would, thank you.
DeleteI love the fig tree limbs. It looks like driftwood in tree form. Also, the jellyfish are interesting. Both are things I will never see around here. Along with Santa in the summer.
ReplyDeleteVal; Santa in the summer is almost unbelievable to everyone in snow and ice countries, more so for those who still believe Australia is a myth and doesn't exist. I love that fig tree too and if I had a yard big enough I would plant one and shape it like that.
DeleteI enjoyed your selections.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to see the bikers ... there is a group near here that take part in a lot of fun carnival processions and events helping to raise money for various charities.
All the best Jan
