Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, Delores, from A Feathered Nest has a meme which she calls
"Words for Wednesday".

She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, if we are able.
Sometimes I look at her words and nothing at all comes to mind.
This week's words are:

1. contrived
2. basic
3. needles
4. downtown
5. spinning
6. seething

Here is my short story:

Rae was close to seething. She'd sent Barry out on some contrived excuse so he'd be away from the farm when all his mates arrived for his surprise birthday lunch.  A basic errand, go downtown and pick up a pair of size eight knitting needles at Marty's haberdashery.
Barry should have been home a half hour ago.
Everyone was waiting on the back porch ready to yell "Surprise!"
As they waited, the beer and lemonade were chilling in the icy creek, the cake was ready with 30 candles and the hired rotisserie was slowly spinning, with the hot coals beneath hissing and sparking from the basting sauce dripping off  the suckling pig as it turned and browned.
Where on earth was Barry?

  2. Applause .... a good one.
Barry was most likely down at the pub starting his party a little early. Haha

  4. You are going to leave us hanging aren't you? Great suspense!! Good chance Barry could be hanging too when he eventually arrives home...by his neck.

  5. Delores; I never thought of it as a cliffhanger, but you're right.

    Manzanita; no, he's not....

    mm; Barry is....

Mimsie; okay, I'll tell you all. Barry is still in Marty's haberdashery staring at the large supply of knitting needles wondering what kind Rae wants. Steel? Plastic? Tortoiseshell? What colour? What length? and finally deciding to buy one pair of every size eight needles Marty has in stock.

  6. lol, he should just called home to check. This is what my hubby usually does - get the shopkeeper to ring me.

  7. mm; that would make sense, someone should tell Barry.

  8. Good one! I especially like your description of that pig roasting. I could almost smell it.

  9. Susan; I haven't had a spit-roasted anything for probably twenty years. All my families seem to prefer seafood on the barbecues. Maybe a steak or a sausage too, but there's a lot of prawns and swordfish steaks getting barbecued.
