Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words/prompts are supplied by Margaret Adamson and Sue Fulcher and can be found here

This week's words/prompts are:

1. furnishing 2. tablet 3. platform 4. arrow 5. frame 6. content

and/or:

1. vase 2. eagle 3. ballroom 4. propelling 5. brand 6. epilogue

Here is my story:

Propelling myself across the floor in my wheeled computer chair, I scooped up the remote and turned on the television, the finals of the Ballroom Dancing competition was to be televised right after the news, so I had marked the timeslot with a big red arrow and even then almost forgot about it, since I rarely looked at the TV guide anymore. I no longer danced myself, being instead content to watch,  foregoing all the sniping and rivalry that went on backstage; one year a bitter loser had actually gone so far as to rip the dress of the winner as she stood on the small platform to receive her prize.

I barely watched the news, intent on a video clip on my brand new tablet about a bald eagle building a nest high on a mountain somewhere. There were hopes of eggs and hatchlings in the future. I snapped a screen shot of the eagle in flight, thinking I would print it out and frame it, while simultaneously listening for the weather report, which always came at the end of the news. an epilogue, so to speak. That would be my cue to pay attention to the television.

I looked around at my new living quarters, a two bedroomed apartment in a retirement village, feeling rather satisfied with the furnishing I had done. My old pieces married well with newer things, all I needed now was a vase or two to fill a corner here and there. a small one for a table maybe, but definitely something oversized for the corner opposite the television.

  1. This is a lovely vignette. I hope that she continues to find contentment and happiness in her new home. And yes, I would have watched the eagle in preference to the news too - every time.

    1. Elephant's Child; I am sure she will continue to be happy as she gradually gets to know her new neighbours and joins a few activity clubs. I would prefer an eagle to the news as well.

  2. Eagles are always good news. Thanks for this sweet mini-story.

    1. Margaret D; just a basic high back office chair on wheels, but fun.

  4. The eagle would have distracted me also. It would be wonderful to see one actually in the process of building a nest.

    1. Dora; some time back in the 80s here I think, but the first ones had a long cord attached to the TV, now they are much better since the 90s I think.

  6. I sure hope we can be content at that stage in our lives. But it´s certainly hard to imagine...
Hubby´s Grandmother lived in such an institution and indeed liked it.
Mine had to share a room with another woman, but then, she suffered Alzheimer´s, so maybe she even was OK with it.
You made me thinking. Back and also into the future.

    1. Iris Flavia; many retirement villages here have single occupancy apartments, either one or two bedrooms, they are not the same as nursing homes where all occupants are housed within one building. There are also blocks of highrise apartments with the owners each buying their apartment, same as in the villages, which are often set within gated communities with lovely gardens all around, but with added facilities such as a community dining room, games room, a place to watch movies, if the residents wish to mix and mingle. They are very expensive to buy into, so I will never have one.

    2. Yep, same here - I likely will never have one. We should play lotto/secretly marry a millionaire or such? Nah. Then I prefer to stay like this with Hubby. Just the latter... I wanna keep.

  7. I imagine her spinning around in her wheeled computer chair, doing a little sit-down dancing as she watches and reminisces. Having such a chair at the actual competition might have been a good defense, with the ability to roll over the toes of a bitter loser bent on destruction! Or to make a quick escape!

  8. I forgot about the prompts and just enjoyed your brilliant story from start to finish. Good job.

  9. How wonderful! Too many who move at this time of their lives end up resentful and angry at having been uprooted, instead of making a new life.
