Wednesday's Words on a Friday

A brand new year's Friday at that.

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words/prompts are supplied by Elephant's Child and can be found here

This week's words/prompts are:

1. diverse

2. universe

3. reverse

4. terse

5. nurse

6. rehearse

and this photo:

Here is my story:

Mrs Stanthorpe had given the class a list of rhyming words and a week to write an essay using all of them, or as many as they could.

"Hands up, all of you who managed to use all the words," she said now. Sean and Betty both put up their hands. "Well done," said Mrs Stanthorpe. "Now, hands up those of you who managed less than three words."

Half of the class raised their hands. Mrs Stanthorpe nodded, then said, "who did not write an essay at all?" No one raised their hand, but everyone knew Robert hadn't written anything. He never did. His father did not allow homework until all the farm chores were done and by then Robert was too tired.

"Sean, you may read your essay out loud, then Betty can have her turn."

Sean stood at the front of the class and began.

"My universe is quite diverse and began when I was born. A nurse helped my mother deliver me and remarked at the time that I had 'wise eyes'. My father, I'm told, was quite terse with his reply, "how could that be, he is brand new, having been born less than two minutes ago." The nurse had replied that I had been born easily and looked around immediately, as if knowing that my life was beginning.

Since then, many things have happened to me. I have grown of course, and learned a great deal.

I have heard conversations lately where people say things like, "if you could reverse time and start over, what would you do differently?"  I always think to myself, I would not like to reverse time and have to live through the years again; being who I am, I don't think I would do anything differently and by doing the time again, I would not learn anything new that I didn't learn the first time. I sometimes wonder if people think this life is a rehearsal and if they learn enough, they can perform better the second time. I don't want a repeat performance.

Instead, I hope to continue on and learn much more. I am interested in not just my own small universe, but the larger one, where all the stars, planets and suns are. I hope to one day become an astrophysicist. "

"Very good Sean," said Mrs Stanthorpe. "Now Betty may have her turn."

After Betty had read her excellent essay, Mrs Stanthorpe directed their attention to the picture of the sun, shining like a star just above the horizon.

"This is your next assignment. You have one week. Write anything you like about this picture, what you see in it, or how it makes you feel or think. Anything at all. I will leave it up for the whole week so you can get some ideas. Now if you will all take out your geometry books we will get started on our triangles and pyramids."

  1. I really enjoyed this - and would much prefer these lessons to learning about triangles (and even about pyramids).

    1. Elephant's Child; this is an English/comprehension/writing lesson which Mrs Stanthorpe 'invented' to get the children interested. I remember suddenly understanding and loving geometry with its triangles etc when we had a great teacher one year who loved his subject and knew how to teach.

  2. Both appeal to me, essay writing - at least this kind where you just write and not have to analyse and always express an opinion : ) I like geometry as well.
And I liked your take on the Words for Wednesday.

    1. Charlotte; I always loved essay writing, but hated book reports where we had to analyse and say what we thought the writer was trying to say.

  3. Essay writing was always my favorite. Kind of liked Sean's wise eyes and feeling kind of bad for Robert.

    1. Arkansas Patti; I loved essay writing too. Robert does okay, he has a retentive mind so learns his lessons well and can pass exams.

  5. At least Robert has a week, to work on his next assignment in stolen moments. That photo might bring him great joy, reminding him of sundown, and quitting time for his chores!

    1. Val; he might have a week if his dad lets up a bit, but it's a busy farm and they can't afford to hire help. I think Robert may dream up a poem and recite it when the time comes.

  6. Beautiful. I often ask Ingo, "would you like to be young again?" and he says "no".
Beautiful story. Let´s embrace what we had and learn even more. Great story to start a New Year!!!
Thank you, Happy New Year to you!
