Football? No thank you.

I wasn't paying much attention to the news, but I did hear a bit about whether or not a certain football match would happen here hinging on whether or not our South Aussie boys would be allowed to come home from Victoria.

My opinion? I don't think they should be allowed to.

Here's the lead up:

South Australia is in lockdown, set to finish Tuesday at midnight.  Our precious little footballers weren't allowed to train as they normally would, so as a collective they all hopped on a plane and went to Melbourne in Victoria, to train so they could run around playing with their balls and being happy little boys.

Melbourne is currently in a Covid crisis.

Not as Bad as the current Sydney crisis, but a crisis nevertheless and they are not in lockdown. Neither is Sydney.

Our boys are over there where it's possible a few of them, or even just one, could come into contact with said virus, especially if a fan of the opposite sex wanted to come visiting and do a little ball playing of her own. It happens. This puts the entire team at risk, meaning they may (or will) bring that sneaky little ball shaped virus back home to Adelaide where it will merrily bounce around creating more havoc.

So don't let them come home! They wanted to be there, let them stay there.

Or, let them first isolate for the required two weeks (not long enough in my opinion) and get tested three times and when they do get home isolate again and get tested again and again and again. (3 times). At the end of all that isolation, perhaps footy season will be over for this year and we can all breathe freely.

For a while.

  1. Melbourne is not in a COVID crisis. Our numbers are low and now contained and tomorrow we should hear news of us being released from our extreme lockdown to something a bit easier. I imagine footy players have to follow the rules imposed on Victorians, which are quite extreme, more so than Sydney. The figure here today was 12 new infections all contained in isolation and no community transmission.

There has been a couple of cases of people returning a positive result after fourteen days of quarantine and I expect they caught it while in quarantine. Go figure that! Even odder is England's quarantine period is only ten days.

If your footy players have behaved themselves while here, and I have not heard otherwise, I think they are probably ok to return and go about freely. Aside from at two large sporting events there has been very little community transmission here. I would have a very different view if they were in Sydney. What a disaster it is there.

    1. Andrew; I'm glad to hear you are not in crisis, I should pay more attention to the news, right? I still believe fourteen days is not a long enough quarantine period, given the (few) numbers that have tested positive or become ill after leaving their quarantine.
I hope the players have behaved, I was remembering early last year when there was an incident in Perth where the girlfriend of a player smuggled herself into the hotel the players were staying in.
Every time I hear about Sydney I wonder about Merle and if she is alright.

    2. P.S. my main point was I don't believe that footballers should be allowed to travel when the rest of us are not.

    3. Yes, why "better" rights for them? And it´s a risk. Here they state when European soccer season is over hell has broken loose with the virus cause fans manage to travel, take off masks, hug... I saw it on the news, it´s all true.

  2. You know that sports are over the rules that are set for the rest of the world ... and how I hate this.
Quarantine after the book for everyone, princes, footballers, as well as you and me.

    1. Charlotte; I don't see why the rules for sports players should be different. They are not Gods and shouldn't be treated as if they were. Lockdown means everyone.

  3. Hopefully the isolation and the triple testing should be enough. We are all really in a rough place these days with travel.

    1. Arkansas Patti; I also hope the isolation and testing will be enough, but if they stayed home like the rest of us have to we wouldn't need to worry. I don't travel so it's no hardship for me to miss a plane or three.

  4. Yep, throughout this pLandemic, it's the young and healthy who've been needlessly hassled...for no better reason than being young and healthy.

    1. Sue; pLandemic? is that a misprint or do you think this pandemic is a planned hoax?
I disagree that the young and healthy have been hassled.

    2. Dear River, i sure do think covid has been used as a means to hassle regular people ... destroy livelihoods. While i'm no sports fan, football games and such - with plenty of spectators:) create jobs.

  5. I was amazed to read that a considerable number of the American athletes who are at the Olympics are not vaccinated. I hope the same is not true of ours and that they are required to isolate/quarantine when they return.
If you are/have been in a danger zone of course you should be tested/isolated when you return.

    1. Elephant's Child; I was also astonished to hear so many American athletes are not vaccinated. I believe all of ours are and there was the isolation period before the games began and they will isolate/quarantine again on returning home. I'm of the opinion (not shared by many) that the Olympics should not have proceeded and hope that everyone there is being super careful.

  7. Vaccines are the best defense, a miracle actually, not sure masks work, they don't hurt, but for sure we can not just hide forever from this thing. Hiding is not living either.

    1. joeh; I think masks do have some effect, if only to make people aware there is a virus around. Their main use is to stop germs etc from spreading from the mask wearer, which is the reason surgeons wear them while operating. I agree vaccines are the best way to go and wish more people would see that. I've had one dose and am staying home as much as possible until I am covered by the second dose. I think this will eventually be like the flu shot that we all get each year.

  8. I'm not into football at all but do like to watch the final for some weird reason.
There are 4 Victorian teams coming to Tasmania this coming weekend if all is well. All the cases in Victoria are in Quarantine as Andrew says...so to me there is no risk at this point.

    1. Margaret D; mostly I'm just annoyed that they get to continue and zip around the country while the rest of us can't.

    2. That's true R, it's annoying that they can and the rest of us can't - then on the other hand they the footballers help keep people entertained on the TV whilst in lockdown - but then, sport seems to be excused from so many things.

  9. You've got it, we have to stop treating sports figures like heroes and excepting them from right behavior, in many ways.

    1. Dora; masking up in a crowded place is a good idea. Our lockdown is lifted but we still have restrictions, masks are mandatory in crowded places such as supermarkets and other stores, public transport including taxis and uber rides, and even in our high schools students and teachers must wear masks unless they are eating lunch.
