Sunday Selections #610

Long ago, Kim of Frog ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if overseas bloggers care to join us.

The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I occasionally join in as do a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.

Starting today with a book I just finished reading:

How the Other Half Lives, by Jacob A Riis, this is about the tenement slums of New York and all the way through I had to keep reminding myself it was written in the 1880s as part of a study on how the poor immigrants lived. I certainly hope things aren't as bad now as they were then.

going for a walk, I noticed this beauty putting her head through the fence

the bottlebrush trees are swarming with bees

none of which I captured in this close up of the brushes

across the street an abandoned dog kennel has been there for quite a while now, I hope the puppy just outgrew it.

on the side I was walking on I saw this pretty boat, which has never been there before and not again since

a bit further, a river of sweet-scented roses, I could smell them from about eight feet away

and when I got close enough I buried my nose in this one for a second. Going past yesterday, the whole row has been pruned with not a single rose left.

the yellow flowering gums have started blooming and are also swarming with bees

this is one of two lemon trees I pass each day on my way to the shop, wishing I could reach the lemons going to waste up there. Well, two weeks ago there was a box full of lemons on the footpath with a sign saying "free, help yourself" so I did. They are sweet lemons, the sort you would use for lemonade perhaps.

lastly, "Look at us, we are in summer clothes now!"

  1. Oh my those little girls- could you ask for anything more perfect??/
why would all of the roses be removed Pruning??? I know nothing about roses but that seems harsh!

    1. Linda Sue; the girls are perfect aren't they! The roses were almost all fully bloomed or overblown, so they were pruned to give the bushes time for another flush of growth and more blooms.

  2. So nice to see all the new growth and blossoms as we are heading for bare stem time. That is a decent dog house. Surprised no one has not just taken it since I guess that is the intent of who ever put it there.

    1. The intent is for anyone who wants it to take the doghouse, but I guess no one needs it. I think it's lovely the world has different blossoming times, it means we can see flowers all year round just by visiting blogs in different areas.

  3. Such a gorgeous Sunday Selections. Love the roses and the bottlebrush - both of which are much for advanced than ours. I am sorry that the roses were pruned, and wonder why. I don't think I could prune while they were in flower.
And of course the summer clad twins are beautiful.

    1. Elephant's Child; the roses were mostly overblown, so a pruning was probably easier than just cutting all those stems. The bushes have time now for new growth and more flowers before next winter. Perhaps the petals were used in potpourri. The summer clad twins are back in winter clothes now the weather has changed again.

  4. I enjoyed going along on the stroll with you, River.

The happy little cherubs in no time at all will be up and racing around...keeping everyone on their toes! :)

Have a good week ahead, River....cuddles to the lovely Lady Lola. :)

    1. Lee; I really need to go on more strolls, but the weather is against me as much as my natural laziness is. the girls are going to be a handful one they're up and running. Lola is getting extra cuddles as the weather has spooked her with enormous thunder claps right over our heads.

  5. The book cover photo if taken here could have looked equally as bad, if not worse. The abandoned kennel would be worth good money and I am surprised it has not been taken. Bah to that Morticia impersonator who cut off the rose blooms.

    1. Andrew; I thought the same about the book cover. The abandoned kennel looks like it was expensive when new, I've seen similar at pet stores, so I am surprised also that it is still there. I can only assume no one needs one. The roses will grow a new flush of flowers in a couple of months.

  6. Thanks for taking us all along. I hope the little kennel finds a new puppy and all the roses found nice vases.

    1. Joanne; I hope someone takes the kennel before it is destroyed by weather. Many of the roses were too overblown for vases, but the buds would be nice in them.

  7. That's a nice roof on the dog house. Lemon tree, very pretty! I'm glad life gave you lemons, no matter what you chose to do with them. The girls are reaching out for a hug!

    1. Val; it is a nice dog kennel, well made and the front isn't entirely open, it has a small wall for shelter from the elements. The girls love hugs.

  8. Isn't it just lovely walking along and being able to smell the roses, not a lot of roses these days have such a strong smell.

    1. Margaret D; not many roses around here are scented, those ones and one bush in the yard by my flats with dark red blooms is quite heavily scented.

  9. How the Other Half Lives, by Jacob A Riis > €0,89 > on my kindle. Heck, you need to send me time for all the book I have!
    Interesting subject!
Oh, the rose wants to see the world!
The dog kennel looks sweet. Oh, the sound of rain must´ve been as wonderful as in our cabin!
Ingo carried such a roof all the way home, but we ended up with metall buckets so I can hear the rain inside.
Love the color of the boat - like my sewing machine!
Awww, you´re really into spring - don´t stop sharing, please!
And lemon trees to take fruits from! Do you have Gennaro´s book "Limoni" - would be perfect for you (he was the teacher of Jamie Oliver and is as funny, smart and all).
    Oh, summer clothes already :-)

    1. Iris; I need more time too for all the books I have on my kindle and real books! The sound of rain here is getting to be too much, we have it coming down in torrents, like waterfalls, for days and days. The occasional sunny day is very welcome. We are told to expect a hot and humid summer. I don't like that at all!
I don't have "Limoni" and really I don't use lemons very much and I don't cook much either. I have days where I cook lots, then put meals in the freezer so I can reheat and eat quickly. I don't enjoy cooking with the electric stove. I have Gennaro's "Italian Bakery" to try different types of bread.
The twins summer clothes didn't last long, the weather is cold and wet again.

  10. Look at the joyful colours! And the cutie kiddies!

    1. Jenn Jilks; the colours were lovely, but now the pretty boat is gone and the sun too. We have thunder, lightning and rain, for days and days. Very unusual for us this time of year.

  11. Maybe soemone needed the roses for a wedding. I love your photos, the boat is so nice - lucky to get that photo. All the trees and so on, they are so unlike anytheing, I ever see. Bottlebrush trees, lemon trees, gum trees, all things I can only dream of.
