On my way home from the shop this morning

I saw something that made me sad,

One of our beautiful rainbow lorikeets has died. I don't ever see any cats in that particular street, and a cat wouldn't leave a whole bird behind. Possibly it was hit by a car. I hope it died quickly and didn't suffer.

Edited to add this picture from the internet:

For Hels: live rainbow lorikeets so you can see how pretty they are.

  1. Oh, that is sad R. I've never ever seen a dead parrot.

    1. Margaret D; I haven't either, this is a first for me. I've seen plenty of dead possums and one dead crow several years ago.

  2. Always sad to see - and it probably was a car.

  3. That is so sad. Such a beautiful little bird. It's strange, though, how rarely we see dead birds.

    1. jabblog; it is strange, I rarely see dead birds, this is only the second one in my thirteen years here.

  4. Dead birds are a rare - and sad - sight. This is a pretty one, I would have been tempted to pick a few feathers.

    1. Charlotte; it is a sad sight, but I wouldn't take any feathers. I only ever picked up loose ones a bird has already dropped and don't even do that anymore.

  5. Can you add a photo of any beautiful rainbow lorikeet while alive? That way we can see how sad the loss was.

    1. Hels; I can look through old files for one but it would take quite a while.

  6. Such a beautiful creature; you can only hope it died suddenly.

    1. Bob; yes, a sudden quick death is far better than a struggling bird.

  7. Sad indeed. Isn't it curious how we never see birds who die of a natural old age death?

    1. Andrew; it's possible they are like cats and know when it is time and take themselves off somewhere hidden.

  8. That's a shame. My mother would say, "Well, they all couldn't survive, or the world would be overrun by lorikeets!" (She'd use a variation of this phrase no matter what animal/bird was being discussed.)

    1. Steve Reed; it is a shame. Mothers have sayings for so many things.

  11. Those birds are beautiful. When I lived in the country I hit an owl once. It flew straight into my grill. It was very sad.

    Thanks for not blaming cats.
We haven't lost many birds around here. For that I am grateful.
The hawk took out a saw-whet owl once, the blue jays killed one of our barred owl chicks, it's the circle of life.

    1. Jenn Jilks; I've seen what cats leave behind, nothing but feathers usually, so I know this wasn't a cat. Most likely a car. The circle of life is sometimes cruel.

  13. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your rainbow lorikeet. It's always tough to lose a cherished bird. Given the circumstances, it's understandable to speculate on what might have happened.

    1. Melody Jacob; it wasn't my bird, they are wild here and flocks of them come and go according to seasons.

  14. Oh, how sad. In... Lemington NP, I think it was, Ingo had one landed on his shoulder. Beautiful, friendly birds...

    1. Iris; they can get very friendly if people feed them, they get used to that and will come down to sit on shoulders or hands.

  15. My heart breaks when I see dead animals on the road and dead birds. How gorgeous was that bird!
