Am I the only one who listens to music via Windows Media?

I have always preferred Windows Media over i-tunes for several reasons. With i-tunes you get a popup window asking you to please sign in or log in or whatever.

They prefer you only listen to what you bought via the i-tunes store. You can import your own music via CDs, but i-tunes can only play those songs IF they can find the "original file" and if I didn't use i-tunes for a while I found most of my songs disappeared into the cloud. Even the ones I'd paid for.

That's the most annoying part.

So, Windows Media. Load up your songs and they are always there, sort them into playlists, mix and match, no problem, nothing disappears into any cloud. All of my i-tunes songs are here too 😀

BUT, (there's always a but, everyone has one) with the more modern versions of Windows there have been changes (bring back Windows XP? Windows98?) and I can't figure out how to even out the volumes of the different songs.

Much of the older ones are all at the same volume, but newer ones are all over the place, I am constantly adjusting the volume via the little icon on my taskbar. I'm running on Windows10.

Any help for someone who doesn't have a clue?  (And gets lost following directions.)

One other thing which Windows Media used to have and that I miss, is above the list of songs in the "library" there used to be a taskbar where you could select "now playing" and get a drop down window of various multi-coloured patterns that would play "in time" with the rhythm, ebbing and flowing with the beat and the volume.

I really miss that, it was fun to watch.

  1. I don't listen to music via Windows media. I have Chromebook and listen to music at home on my CD player or YouTube on my TV or computer.

  3. I don't really listen to music on my PC, and if, then I am oldfashioned and use a CD player or YouTube.
But I'm with you on the "Bring back some old wersion of WIndows"-front. Yes please! We had more freedom of costumization back then.

    1. Charlotte; I have music playing almost all the time, because it keeps Lola calm. Otherwise she continually meows at me and I have no idea why, so I play music and she is quiet. I liked the older Windows versions for the great screen savers too.

  5. Sorry, no help from me, either. I use Windows 10, but my music comes from Spotify, which my son set up for me. It's a paid service (which has increased the price a couple times over the years). It used to be $9.99 a month, and now I think it's up to $11.99. The fact that it costs doesn't bother me. I have set up playlists, and sometimes it will not play some of the songs. I don't know what that's all about! It just says it can't play, and skips them. Maybe they were imported from my old playlists that I THINK were from Windows media.

    1. Val; I have heard of spotify but don't want to sign up and pay. You might be right about the possibly imported songs.

  6. My daughter gifted me Spotify and I moved all my iTunes over to that platform. I have to say I absolutely love it. And it's all on my phone so I play my lists in the car and on my remote speakers at home.

  8. I'm not much help if any help, R. I'm sorry. I play music from Youtube to a speaker in the room, I created a few playlists and bought a two-person subscription some time ago.

    1. Margaret D; I'm not one for buying subscriptions for something I might rarely use. I go to youtube to find songs I might want to play on my blog now and again.

  9. Ingo installed me Media Player Classic... so... sorry, no help from here, either. Other, YouTube! These days data don´t matter anymore, right?
Haha, remember the beginnings with a 56-k-modem! If (!) I went online Ingo´s Grandma noticed and also could not use her phone anymore. Plus she doubted "this internet" is legal.

    1. Iris; I remember "dial-up" days, when people couldn't phone in or out because the computer was on. I wonder if that's one reason mobile phones were invented?
