Sunday Selections #763
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.
this new young tree has pretty flowers with a very strong scent so I took a photo and my phone app tells me it is a "chinaberry" tree. I got an immediate headache from it and now walk down that street on the opposite side when going to and from the shops. It looks a lot like the bigger tree in the driveway here which I know as white cedar. It is also flowering now, so I can't be walking past it and have to go the long way around to get to a bus stop.
bottlebrush is also flowering profusely and they are everywhere! All over Adelaide. No wonder I am sneezing.
here is a closeup, so you can easily see how it got its name.
this white rose has hundreds of blossoms and recently a very strong wind...
blew a carpet of petals onto the lawn, yet the bush didn't look any different.
interesting patterns in a cloudy sky towards the west,
while in the east the sun appeared to be "caught" in the fork of the big gum tree. Same day, same street.
some of our Australian coins now have King Charles the 3rd on them, the top one here is Queen Elizabeth 2nd, her coins are all still in circulation,
I have turned over a couple so you can see the bigger ones are 20 cents with a platypus in water, and the little ones are 5 cents, with an echidna.
TV series I am currently rewatching (again):
Against The Wind is Australian history, the story begins in Ireland in 1786 and goes on to tell of the convict ship travelling to Australia and then follows the life of "Mary Mulvane" and several others as the tiny settlement town of Sydney grows and covers the "Rum Rebellion" a few years later.
Shogun: Japanese history about a Dutch trading ship manned by Englishmen which gets blown off course by a storm and ends up in Japan, where the ship's "Pilot" learns to speak Japanese and follow their customs at the wish of "Lord Toronaga".
Merlin: the story of how young Merlin became the great wizard of his time.
The Blacklist: This one ran for ten seasons and begins with the FBI's number one on their "most wanted" list surrendering himself and then using them to help him capture/kill his own enemies while also helping them capture other most wanted criminals.
Stargate SG1: science fiction, the series begins with a separate movie in which a "Stargate" is unearthed somewhere in ancient Egypt, they learn how to use it and travel through space to another galaxy and on their return to Earth, one is left behind. The series picks up the story when the dormant Stargate suddenly comes alive and a team begins regular travels, first to rescue the left-behind one, then on to other galaxies with many adventures.
and a few more:
Centennial: American history, beginning with native tribes and interactions with white settlers, continuing through to more modern times. It covers early fur trappers and moves into more political areas.
Vikings: well, Viking history as imagined and brought to life from old tales I guess, very bloodthirsty and very interesting, showing how their ships were made, sea trips, battles won and lost. I liked it partly because "Ragnar Lothbrok" is played by an Australian actor, Travis Trimmel, and because my own ancestors are from an area very close to where this begins.
Death in Paradise; This is still running I think, I have 14 seasons, the first begins with a detective brought to the Caribbean to replace a murdered detective and to solve his murder. He does so and then wishes to return to England but is kept on the small island by the Chief of Police who values his work. He is eventually killed and replaced with another English detective. Season 14 has the 5th detective who is a native rather than an Englishman. It's quite lighthearted and the scenery is gorgeous, all the sun and and sea one would expect in the Caribbean.

Your journeys are becoming ever longer as the flowers on various trees and shrubs come into bloom and you have to take avoiding action. What a misery for you. Would wearing a mask help? How about a gas mask? (joking)
ReplyDeletejabblog; masks don't help, if I can still smell the scent I will get the headache. I often hold a folded wad of handkerchief over my nose and mouth to pass certain areas, but my best option is to just stay home. There's probably only three weeks to go before the pollens are finished.
DeleteBeautiful photos. ❤️
ReplyDeleteLinda's Relaxing Lair; thank you.
DeleteI remember Merlin, if that's the one I'm thinking of, I'm not 100 percent sure. We are finishing up Wednesday. One last one to go.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry they gave you a headache. Soooo not fun. Don't think I've ever seen the bottlebrush before. I'd love to shoot macro of that one.
Wishing you a headache-free rest of your weekend with a great big side of boogie boogie.
The Happy Whisk; Merlin with Colin Morgan? Set in the mythical city of Camelot, over five seasons of dvds. I have stayed home most of the weekend, just dashing out for a newspaper and milk, so the headache is barely there right now.
DeleteThe flowers might be pretty, but if you are allergic, they aren't pretty to you.
ReplyDeleteThose are fascinating series, and I would imagine the older coins will stay in circulation until they wear out and are replaced in the normal course of time.
messymimi; they are still pretty to me and once the pollens are finished the flowers don't carry much scent at all, so I can go walking with no trouble. I imagine the coins will be around for a long time yet. I have put away one of each denomination from Queen Elizabeth's final year, they may be worth something to someone several generations down the track.
DeleteThe jacarandas were in full bloom when I was in Sydney last weekend. They haven't shown here yet, and I don't think the bottle brush is blooming either. Me being mostly cashless, I haven't as yet seen the new coins with the head of Charles. I looked at the tree with the sun photo full sized and it's a good photo. I can't remember if I watched Against the Wind. It seems like I should watch it, and Shogun.
ReplyDeleteAndrew; Our jacarandas are usually blooming in November, so I have that headache to look forward to and then I'm okay until late July next year when the night blooming jasmine and the Murrayas begin again. I don't like being cashless and having to use my card for every little thing. It is more convenient, but I prefer still to use cash and when the purse is empty I stop spending, like now, all I have is $10 and small change until next Centrelink payday, unless I go to the bank which means a trip to the city or cash from a supermarket.
DeleteIf you are interested in History at all, I would recommend Against The Wind and Shogun too. Shogun is based on James Clavell's book of the same name, while Centennial is American history but also worth watching, it is a boxed set of six discs based on James A Michener's book.
I've seen a few of these and enjoyed. Your photos are wonderful but hayfever must be agonizing.
ReplyDeleteXO
WWW
Wisewebwoman; which ones have you seen? thank you about the photos and the hayfever is manageable as long as I stay home a lot.
DeleteI watch Vikings many moons ago I didn't finish the entire series but ironically finished the sequel series Vikings Valhalla on Netflix.
ReplyDeleteBoth programs are very good though all the gore and death can be a bit heavy sometimes
Adam; welcome to drifting. I have seen Vikings Valhalla too and found it just as good as Vikings. I do agree some of the gore is a but much, but probably that's how things really were back then?
DeleteLovely photos, R. Shame about the flowers on that tree causing a bit of a problem for you - strong scent is not always good for ones nose or head either.
ReplyDeleteAgainst The Wind - haven't seen that, sounds good.
I just looked it up, the show is from 1978 when Jon English was about 29 or 30 years old.
DeleteMargaret D; too many plant varieties are a problem for me. Against the Wind is an old show from last century late 80s or early 90s, I can't remember, starring a younger Jon English and Gerard Kennedy too.
ReplyDeleteOh, so sorry you cannot enjoy that beauty of Spring/Summer!!
ReplyDeleteAm I thankful I have but a - hahaha... sun allergy.
King Charles. Hm. I have his Mum right here.... on my little sketches, an echidna is on the other side...
A platypus we saw for real, weee!
I am still watching the criminal series "Instinct" - they´ll have a baby soon!
"Against the Wind" sounds promosing! On my list! If from Australia! "Bought" a book from England in February... still not here!
With Stargate I associate The Simpsons and our University´s McGyver-event! Hehe ;-)
ET comes to mind, too, left behind...
They ALL sound interesting!!! I still have a pile to watch through, reckon it´ll grow! Yippee!
Cool with your ancestors! I have no clue (and no interest) in where my families came from (no clue due to fleeing and leaving everything behind) but BEAUTIFUL LIFE.
"Death in Paradise" sits right here already, thank you!
Iris; summer is fine, it's only July to December for the main hayfever stuff. I have only seen platypus at the zoo.
DeleteAgainst The Wind was made in 1978 and there are other shows with the same name, so make sure you get the right one, the main "stars" are Jon English, Bryan Brown, Gerard Kennedy, listed on the cover of the set. it was a mini series, only 12-13 episodes.
I haven't seen Instinct and probably won't, I have so much already I haven't seen but don't have the TV on all day, the set sits behind me by the wall and my desk/table is facing the window, so I can't see both at once. Your book from England is STILL not there? You need to check on that, I buy books from the UK sometimes and they take a while but never that long!
My mother's ancestors are all from the south of Sweden, (though she and her mother were both born in Germany), and that area is near the Kattegut sea where Vikings is set.
I can't relate The Simpsons to Stargate, nor MacGyver either. Stargate is more Science Fiction to me.
Thank you for letting me know about the Wind! Amazon lets me know automatically about the book - never again! Gosh I need to buy local whenever possible (but of course I wanted Jamie´s book in the original, as all I have of him - in the aftermath I could´ve bought it in Madeley come January!). There were The Simpsons-episodes on the actor of Stargate/McGyver... of course - seems like The Simpsons have an episode on simply anything, also Star Trek and Steven Hawkins...
DeleteLOL, write and do! Just went to amazon, DVDs> "Against the wind". What do I get? "Gegen den Wind" a series from the 1990s, a very sexy surfer, I even have one DVD of that. Hm AI! Tries to think for me. "Gegen die Wand" was a second suggestion! "Against the Wall".
DeleteIris; I have a book titled Against the Wind and it has nothing at all to do with the movie but is a story involving bikers, murder, a prison riot a murder trial, really great story.
DeleteI've watched Stargate SG-1 in its entirity and the two movies that followed. I loved it. VIkings is excellent too.
ReplyDelete:o)
Cheers
PM
Plasman; I have seen it all too and the movies, I own my own dvd sets. Have you seen Stargate Atlantis?
DeleteYou have shown some lovely photos. I love that you watch a lot of history programs. I do as well. This is a great selection. Have a nice day today.
ReplyDeleteDVArtist; thank you. I don't watch things like History documentaries, I find such things incredibly boring, but these shows are more like movies which portray the past and are often based on facts so they are real enough without putting me to sleep.
DeleteWell, the flowers LOOK nice, even if your nose doesn't agree! Dave and I tried to watch "Blacklist" but we got bored with it after about one season. I think "Centennial" was a book -- a Michener novel, maybe?
ReplyDeleteSteve Reed; the flowers do look very nice. I know a few people who didn't like The Blacklist, but I did, even the final episode in season 10, but not the actual ending. I think that could have been better. Mostly I got caught up in Tom and Liz's relationship.
DeleteYes, Centennial was a Michener novel and quite good reading. I still have my copy as well as Shogun by James Clavell.
This sounds like tough times, pollen vise. Of your movies, I have only watched Against the Wing (I remember the theme song) and Shogun.
ReplyDeleteYou made me curious, as I do genealogy for fun, from where did your ancestors come?
And ... oh your coins are pretty. I'll have to post some of mine ;)
DeleteCharlotte; the tough pollen times are almost over for this year, thank goodness. The shows are good ones aren't they? My mother's ancestors are from the south east of Sweden, with Tingsryd, Emmaboda (Immaboda?)and Blekinge listed in the family tree Mum made for me.
DeleteNot too far from where I grew up in Elsinore, only across the water in Sweden. Emmaboda is the right one. It's a famous town, as Wilhelm Moberg, author, who wrote "The Emigrants" series lived there.
DeleteCharlotte; we're almost neighbours! Though my birth town, Hamburg, is closer to Iris who is in Braunschweig.
DeleteI like the gum tree picture with the sun. The Pony invests in silver coins, and has been finding that they now have King Charles on them. Have you ever seen the TV series "The Lost World?" It was around 1999-2000. We used to watch it every morning before leaving for school. I think it was an Australian production. One of the stars was Rachel Blakely, as somewhat of a villain.
ReplyDeleteVal; I like that picture too. I haven't seen "The Lost World" and don't even remember it, those were the years I was flat-out working long hours every day including overtime and weekends, keeping bills paid and food on the table after the divorce. I will see if I can find it, maybe on ebay.
ReplyDeleteI love collecting coins.
ReplyDeleteI also love watching movies.
I'm from far away. Greetings from Indonesia. Your blog is amazing!
