Wednesday's Words on a Friday
The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.
The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.
If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.
This month the words/prompts are supplied by River and can be found here
This week's words/prompts are:
1.property 2.barrels 3.dingo 4.down 5.silent 6.doubt
Charlotte's colour of the month is Ocean Twilight
Here is my story:
“Get off my property!” the
old man yelled in his thin, quavering voice.
Brandishing a rusty old
shotgun, he threatened to “let both barrels loose on ya!”
The younger man opened
the door of his jeep and waved a white handkerchief. “Grampy! It’s me! Sammy!”
He stepped down slowly and took off his hat.
“Can’t be,” said the
old man. “Sammy is just a little boy.”
“I’ve grown up Grampy,
I went away to school and now I have come home.”
“Everyone went away,”
said the old man, lowering the shotgun. “Everyone left me. Even Julia and Sammy.”
“I’m Sammy,” said the
younger man. “Julia was my mother and she died from the Covid. But I came back
Grampy, I’m here now.”
The old man stood
silent, his faded eyes, once a deep ocean blue, showed doubt as Sammy walked
towards him. Sammy reached for the shotgun and gently took it from old Dave’s
hands, gladly noticing it wasn't loaded.
“Remember the dingo
puppy you let me raise when it’s mother was found dead on the road?”
“You named it Jack,”
said Dave, looking up at last. “Sammy? You really here? I’m not dreamin’?”
“I’ve come to help, Grampy,
we can get the home patch growing again, we can start with vegetables and a few
chickens. I have a friend with me, her name is Margaret. Can she come inside
out of the sun?”
Romance and happiness are in the air.
ReplyDeletejabblog; maybe a little, but safety and care for Grampy too.
DeleteOh, such a bitter-sweet story! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIris; thank you, I don't know where my mind foud this one. It just wrote itself.
DeleteThat´s the only way my uncreative mind works... the words mean something from real life or I´m out. Sad...
DeleteVery nice and like Iris said, bittersweet for sure. Hope he let her inside and I hope they got their patch going again.
ReplyDeleteThe Happy Whisk; thank you. Of course Dave lets Margaret inside, he loves and trusts Sammy and is happy that someone has remembered him after all these years.

DeleteOh my, R, what a sweet story. The poor man must have been so pleased to have family back +1.
ReplyDeleteMargaret D; thank you. Dave is happy to finally have someone to talk to and help him, he has been lonely and alone for many years and getting old too, unable to care for a veggie patch on his own.
DeleteWow - a few little tricks in that one. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI sort of played - https://jeanieinparadise.blogspot.com/2026/03/five-photos-on-friday.html
jeanie; thank you, I'll pop over and read in a minute
DeleteSometimes stories just pop up after reading the words. This is a good one.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte; I like it when the words write themselves. Thank you
DeleteDave must be lonely so it's nice of Sammy to come up. Good use of the prompts.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day.
lissa; Dave has been lonely a long time, he lives a distance away from any towns.
DeleteJack is a good name for a dog! I'll take that as a nod to my little heeler/dachshund.
