Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along and read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words are supplied by messymimi and can be found on her blog as well as here on mine.

Charlotte's colour of the month is Steel Blue.

This week's words are:

1.well  2.understanding  3.challenge  4.person  5.genuine  6.suffering

and/or:

1.faith  2.ambition  3.chance  4.hard  5.design  6.closet

Here is my story:

Dean sent around a message asking for a meeting at the old wishing well at 10am. Sam was waiting when he arrived and soon after they were joined by Jesse and Ryan. "What's this about?" Ryan asked. "Yesterday's Town Meeting," said Dean. "I was hoping for more than just us four." Just then Daniel arrived, apologising for being late, "I was out mowing the hayfield and Marlene had to signal me by waving a tablecloth," he said. "Rod is right behind me, but limping a bit and Marlene is phoning Cindy to get her Jeff and the boys to come along."

Dean agreed to wait until all were assembled, then began. "At yesterday's Town Meeting there was a lot of talk about helping people, raising money and supporting this or that cause, most of them being charities for overseas places, third world countries. But people worldwide already support those charities and it's my understanding we have a case of genuine suffering right here in Dresden."

He had their interest for sure and continued, "look across the river, there's old Claude Jackson's place, run down, broken machinery, overgrown weeds where the oats and barley should be growing and a burned down barn that insurance won't pay up for saying it was his own fault when half the town knows Red Bently tossed a lit cigar in there. He was hoping the whole place would go up so he could buy it for peanuts and expand his piggery."

"That's true," said Rod, "we heard him bragging about the design for the new pig sheds he planned and a big new house with a walk-in closet for his wife." Sam chimed in, "it's a leap of faith to think that woman would be happy with a single walk-in closet, she has mansion ambitions and won't be happy with just a new house." "You got that right," said Jesse, "Cindy got cornered by her at the market and just about got her ears talked off with her 'me/my/our plans' to 'put Dresden on the map'.

"Hoity-toity is what Marlene says," said Daniel, waving at Jeff and his three sons who had just pulled up in their truck. Sam filled them in while Dean pulled a bucket of ice from his own truck and set a dozen beers in it.

Jeff and his boys agreed they were up for the challenge of helping Claude, "he's a good person," said Roger, who had met Claude while he was still Janitor at the local school. "It's going to be hard work," said another of Jeff's sons, "but it's worth taking a chance on, he's got good land there, great soil and it would be a shame to lose that under a load of pig sheds."

They settled the plan with a beer or two each and began to discuss tools and supplies while Roger said he would go and tell Claude what was happening.
