Damn you Microsoft!
While I was online today, my brother popped in for a visit and while we were chatting, my computer turned itself off.
After he left I turned it back on to find a microsoft page which required me to re-enter all my passwords and choose a background colour for my desktop and all kinds of other goings on that I wasn't happy about.
Then I tried to access the blog I'd been reading, which was there, but I was unable to comment. Instructions said to sign in with google to comment. I was already signed in! after several frustrating tries, I went to Google. Typed in google sign in page and there I accessed my google account, which I was signed into, entered my password again and hey presto, commenting was restored.
Then I discovered (Oh Woe is Me!) ALL my picture files, documents and downloads were gone. ALL my family photos, the pictures I'd saved to turn into bookmarks and a host of other things, like my Sunday Selections folders, all gone! I almost cried. What to do??
Sent a text to "no-one", who suggested I try a 'restart' which should restore it all.
It did, thank goodness. and THANK YOU "no-one", big sigh of relief and back to normal now.
HUGE sigh - and I am so glad that your files miraculously reappeared.
ReplyDeleteElephant's Child; if I had only thought of the restore in the beginning, I wouldn't have wasted an hour of my precious time. Thankfully 'no-one' reminded me of that option.

ReplyDeleteCharlotte; I worried most about losing all the family photos, some almost 50 years old, others even older from when I was a child. I'm always grateful to 'no-one' and her help.

ReplyDeleteI remember my first attempts at Ingo´s computer. It crashed and I thought I´d destroyed it for good - did I have a bad day (he was at work).

I have a PC and pics are all stored on an external hard drive.
I would´ve cried for sure, so glad you got it all back.
Funny, same solution as in the year 2000. Ingo just turned the darn thing on again, LOL.
Iris Flavia; I'm used to turning off and then on again, but this time the new microsoft stuff all stayed there and I just didn't think about the restore option. I'll remember it for next time that's for sure. Yes I have a laptop, no room here for a big desk computer. I have things stored on an external hard drive too and I was ready to start reinstalling things from that, but I haven't backed up more recent things for a couple of months now.

Victor SE Moubarak; there was no powercut, if the computer is unattended for a while it does turn itself off and that's what happened, but when I turned it back on all the weird new microsoft stuff happened, instead of just the page I had been on.

ReplyDeleteSteve Reed; it was a bit of a scare, but nothing too worrying, I just thought I had lost all my recent photos which would mean no Sunday Selections posts for a while, apart from that it was more a nuisance as I thought I would have to re-enter all passwords and blog contacts etc.

ReplyDeleteArkansas Patti; I must be getting more used to this type of stuff as I was more annoyed than worried. I thought I'd lost all my most recent photos. I have older stuff backed up on an external hard drive so I can access things from there, but that's more time consuming too.
