 "Queen's daily jam sarnie*

Kate Kulniece

Could a daily jam sandwich be the secret to the Queen's longevity?

A former royal chef has revealed the Queen's favourite sandwich - and she has been having it for more than nine decades. Former royal chef Darren McGrady worked for the family for close to two decades and has now revealed the go-to daily treats of the monarch.

"The Queen was served jam pennies (jam sandwiches) in the nursery as a little girl, she's had them for afternoon tea ever since," he said. "Simple, just bread and jam with a little butter, usually strawberry jam. We'd make the jam at Balmoral Castle with the gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens."

Mr McGrady shares his insights on YouTube and says the midday meal would not be complete without scones.

:She'd always have afternoon tea wherever she was in the world," he said.

Another savoury sandwich that the Queen is know to enjoy a bite of is a simple tuna mayo - a staple for many Brits.

Owen Hodgson, a former royal chef, said the Queen's favourite sandwich was tuna and mayonnaise, adding it had to be well buttered and served with thin slices of cucumber and a sprinkle of pepper.

(*sarnie= English slang for sandwich)

(Aussie slang = sanger)

my thoughts: I like a tuna mayo myself, not too much mayo and a sprinkle of dried dill tips mixed in. I also like sandwiches of brown bread with mild cheese and sliced gherkins.

What are your favourite sandwiches or afternoon tea treats?

  1. Warm multi grain bread from a local bakery, Irish cheese, mayo, sliced chicken, romaine and cucumbers thinly sliced. Just had one made by Grandgirl.

  2. I don't eat many sandwiches when I'm at home, but I do like tuna salad (or as you put it tuna mayo). I add pickle relish and sometimes a tiny bit of yellow mustard.

    1. Kathy G; I don't eat as many sandwiches lately, but I do like a tuna mayo, and hard boiled egg with mayo too. Another favourite is fritz and pickle. Fritz is a lunch meat unique to South Australia, but similar to other lunch meats in other states and countries. The "pickle" is a spreadable sweet mustard pickle.

  3. Whatever the Queen does, it is working. I rarely have sandwiches at home but when I am out I always get a BLT (bacon, lettuce, tomato--no mayo) , if available.

    1. Arkansas Patti; I tried a BLT once, but I prefer to just eat the bacon without a sandwich. I do eat lettuce and tomato sandwiches though.

  4. It obviously works for her. My favourite sandwiches include cheese - though I very rarely have afternoon (or morning) tea.

    1. Elephant's Child; I like cheese on a sandwich, sometimes with sliced gherkins, sometimes with vegemite and lettuce, sometimes with tomato. I never have morning or afternoon tea anymore and I'm losing weight at last.

  5. That's the exact sandwich The Pony took for his school lunches, after his 3rd grade teacher turned him off of his daily hot dog by telling the class what they were made of. I like tuna salad, but it doesn't travel well as a lunch. For years I took cheddar cheese on a bagel, with yellow mustard.

    1. Val; I found tuna and mayo travels well as a lunch if it is kept cold. I used to carry a small insulated bag to work with me, in the summer I would add a frozen icepack to it. I don't like bagels.

  6. Jam sandwiches - imagine! When I was growing up I often took lettuce and mayo sandwiches to school. I haven't had one of those in years, though. I do love peanut butter and butter on whole wheat but have basically stopped eating it because of the calories. Instead, I have peanut butter and sliced banana. Hummus and thinly-sliced cucumber is good on homemade white bread. Ham with mustard, chicken with mayo, ground ham mixed with pickle relish and mayo, and tuna with mayo and onions - all good. I couldn't pick a favourite; I love them all :) I would rather eat a sandwich than just about anything else, but i have cut down on them, instead I have been eating a salad with lean protein for one of my main meals. Insert sad face here ...

You mentioned gherkins - I haven't had one in decades - maybe it's time to get some. When I was growing up they were reserved for "fancy" platters at church suppers. We weren't very sophisticated, I guess, if that was fancy. But they are good!

    1. jenny_o; when I was eight I began making my own school lunches and always took a plum jam sandwich, it was the quickest and easiest thing. I think I did that right up until high school. Recently I stopped eating peanut butter, it seems to sit heavier in the stomach than it used to. I have cut down on sandwiches too, in my weight losing efforts. Go ahead and get some gherkins :) I use the sweet spiced ones as well as the dill cucumber type. But not on the same sandwich, ugh.

  7. I've never thought of mayonnaise with tuna. It seems a curious combination but I am keen to try it now. I would guess not with chilli tuna though.

    1. Andrew; I am shocked! How have you never thought of tuna mayo! It's a world wide favourite and you didn't know about it? Drain the tuna and mix with a fork but don't use too much mayo. It definitely wouldn't work with chilli tuna. That's best with just butter on a very fresh white bread roll.

  8. Instead of a sandwich, i like avocado toast. Sort of an open face sandwich, if you will.

    1. messymimi; avocado is one of the few things I really dislike. I tried it several ways, including on toast, but it just feels wrong in my mouth. I do like toast though, and sometimes put sliced tomato on toast, top it with chees and then grill until the cheese melts. A cheat's version of pizza.

    1. Mike; no. A burger is not a sandwich, however yummy it might be.

  11. And two new words learned! :-)
Nice to see the Queen takes the simple food, too!
I just have a sandwich I learned from Sami from Perth: Take salad! Two leaves of salad, cheese, salami inside, boiled egg, fast, yummy, healthy.
Do you have a Grill´d around? You can get the burger in... salad (that´s what Sami did and I thought, oh, noooo. Reckon how I will order next time - yummy!)
I like tuna, too, but no sauces...
Afternoon tea... not a German thing, I reckon, though many have... cakes with, tadaaaa... whipped cream ;-)
Funny the Queen is still so popular in your country - well, she is cute, after all.
Over the years I saw her on TV/internet smiling all over, and I think she has a great sense of humor.
I remember one scene where her late hubby dressed up as one of the royal guards on an official occasion and she had trouble to not giggle away, walking by. Sooooo nice to have been so much in love after all those years! I understand the hype around her.

    1. Iris; I don't buy foods ready made, so I don't know if there is a Grill'd around here. I don't think we have anything but the Macca's out on the main road, about five minutes walk, then forever to get across the road because of non-stop traffic. I have made salad sandwiches like that, no bread just lettuce with fillings. My German mum loved afternoon tea here in Australia, but not every day. I like the Queen very much. She has done her job with a smile and politely for many years.

    2. Macca´s, brrrr.... Grill´d is something different, but better not go, one gets "hooked" ;-)

  12. I like a BLT or a sandwich filling of Italian salami and slices of cucumber or cheddar cheese and slices of tomato or crunchy peanut butter and tomato.
P.S. As a British person I despise the term "Brit".

    1. Yorkshire Pudding; I don't like the term "Brit" either. I'm not a fan of salami, although I do sometimes put very thin slices on a pizza. Mostly I use prosciutto on pizza if I have any meat at all. I like cheese with cucumber and tomato, but I don't think tomato and peanut butter would be to my liking. I prefer peanut butter on it's own.

  13. I love a good tuna sandwich. My favorite way to make them is to dice up an apple, add it to some tuna with mayo and then add a dash or two of balsamic vinegar. I also like plain old peanut butter!

    1. Steve Reed; I like tuna and mayo with dried dill tips mixed in, but not the apple, I don't have enough chewing teeth left for that level of crunch.
