Sunday Selections #622

Long ago, Kim of Frog ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if overseas bloggers care to join us.

The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I occasionally join in as do a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.

starting today with one of the unwell cockatoos:

maybe not easy to see, but his beak is overgrown

and his feathers are looking "rough" with most of his crest already lost

this closer shot shows how far over his beak has grown, and it has become very narrow, this makes it hard for the bird to eat properly

a new icecream truck has appeared at the fairy garden

Meg: "come and see!"

Riley: "it looks delicious, so many choices"

But where are the fairies? do we wait or just help ourselves?

Harvey Banana reads a book to the girls who  aren't paying much attention, with Gillian practising her splits and Riley practising her backflips

Jordan sits on top of the fan watching

Meg decides she'd like to be a roller skating dancer on you tube.

I spent the day with the twins last Thursday,

here is Ana midway through rolling over

Gen at her favourite toy, can you see the coloured keys are lit? They play music when pushed.

Ana has found another musical toy, most of their toys are interactive, making sounds when buttons or shapes are pushed

Gen making her way across the floor to me, not quite crawling yet, she pulls herself along on her belly

Sitting in the play chair watching a bit of TV while Ana gets changed

Ana's turn in the chair, watching me make silly faces while Gen gets changed

reaching for my hand, then it was time to go to the clinic

it was immunisation day for them and here they are settling down back at home after the needles and the crying, you can see the bandaid on Gen's leg. Both girls are now saying dadada.

This is a very old photo of a construction site way up north in Western Australia, this concrete engineering construction is the type of work my brother does in remote areas. This one was called the Pluto Project.

  1. What's up with the cockatoo? Is it just an old bird, or does it have a congenital deformity?

    1. Steve it is a dreadful disease called Beak and Feather syndrome. It will eventually kill the bird.

      Delete
    2. Steve Reed; the disease is rife throughout Australia and nothing can be done about it, The rough feathers which sometimes turn brown is often the first symptom, then the crest is lost and the beak grows too fast.

  2. My heart aches for the cocky. I LOVED the rest of the upbeat and beautiful post though.

    1. Elephant's Child; this particular cocky often comes down alone after the rest have left and takes his time getting enough food, using his claws to get food out of the overgrown beak.

  3. sorry about the birds, is is a seisease that spreads like wild fire?
Your babies are still SO baby!! Delightful! Glad to got to spend time with them.

    1. Linda Sue; it doesn't spread like wildfire, but communal feeding from pans, trays etc will help to spread it, so now I just put seed on the grass and I was going to stop feeding, actually allowed my supply to run out, then a neighbour brought me a huge bag of seed as a Christmas gift for the birds.
I was very exhausted once I got home from being with the babies, I held them a lot and they are SO heavy now! In photos they look similar in size, but Gen is definitely heavier. It was a lot of fun though, being with them most of the day.

  4. You would have had a fun time with the girls on Thursday...every moment spent with them is so precious.

The poor bird...it's sad seeing it like that.

I hope you have a good week ahead, River. Cuddles to the lovely Lady Lola. I hope she is doing well. :)

    1. Lee; I am very much pout of practice when it comes to babies, but it was fun and they are happy little girls which makes things easier.
I worry about the bird, I have never seen one with a beak this long, but he/she manages to eat still. Lola is very well, had her twice yearly "manicure" yesterday.

  5. I think the cocky is not long for this world. Rather sad.

It sounds like you had such a fun day with the girls. Just visiting or giving a hand? Both perhaps.

    1. Andrew; it's surprising just how long they can live with the disease, I had one coming around that was almost bald and he disappeared for a while, so I thought he had died, but then he turned up a few weeks later.
Yes, visiting and giving a hand with the girls, I held one while S held the other for their immunisations.

  6. How sad for the bird. Shame you cannot live trap them for euthanization.
On a happier note. the babies are growing daily. Almost crawling.

    Replies
    1. Joanne; it's impossible to trap them and the wildlife people don't recommend it since the disease is so widespread in Australia. They do ask that any birds not in the large parrot family get reported if they suddenly get the same thing.
I think the babies will be crawling by the end of the month.

  7. I'm so sorry the birds are continuing to become ill.

The ice cream truck is a nice addition to the fairy world the girls (and Jordan) inhabit.

    Those babies are most precious!

    1. messymimi; not many of the birds are ill, at the moment this is the only one and the rest of the flock seem to be younger birds than the ones I fed last year. The ice cream truck was a gift from a neighbour who bought it in a thrift store. The babies certainly are precious.

  8. Oh my, how the twins have grown, they are just a delight to see in these photos.
The poor parrot, but that's what happens unfortunately at times.

    1. Margaret D; the twins are so big now I can only hold one at a time and not for long, they are very active too, rolling and wriggling all around the floor. I'm sad about the cockatoo, but there's nothing to be done about it.

  9. Oh, such a poor lille fella.
Reckon you cannot catch him and bring him to the vet (which (here at least) would be expensive, too) - but then ... it´s a life!.
Is the bird old? He looks like he has made his freedom, he does not look anxious or such? Rather "tired"...
    Aw. Poor fella.

Cool ice cram truck, such great (and bad) memories!!!
Like with the pizza I always took the same. In summer I was sent to Tornesch, near Hamburg, to my cousin and Wednesdays the ice-cream truck came!!
And oh, those skates! I had teh cheap ones back then (and now I´m too old and afraid to fall).

Oh, I remember my kid´s doc.
He went, "now this will hurt, it´s an oily one." (I was maybe 3 years old). He was right! Did that hurt! But since I was scared my muscles were cramped and not much bleeding.
    Clever man.

Oh, if you are allowed and like, please share more of your Brother´s work!!!

    1. Iris; these birds are big and wild, catching is impossible and since there are so many wild ones throughout Australia with this disease it doesn't make sense to take just one to the vet when there is no cure anyway. I don't know how old this one is, but I do know that healthy birds can live as long as 80 years.
The ice cream truck is a great find, but now I need a tiny doll to stand inside it. I have favourite ice cream flavours but sometimes I will try something new. I never had skates.
You had a good doctor, he warned you this will hurt, when the twins get older I hope the doctors will say the same.
I don't have more pictures of my brother's work. You can maybe google for images of the Adelaide Northern Expressway and when you see the bridges, that's the parts my brother worked on recently, for three years.

  10. I love the ice cream truck and the roller skates. And so many pictures of the twins! Looks like they have a good selection of toys to keep them busy. My son Genius never crawled. Just pulled himself along with his elbows, like an army soldier creeping into position. He turned out okay!

    1. Val; I wish I had more of the roller skates so all the redheads can wear them at once, but I only have the one pair, so they take turns. The twins have toys handed down from other babies as well as all the ones bought by myself, "no-one" and other family members. my older son crawled backwards and got himself stuck under things because he hadn't worked out forward, but not for long, he got up and walked instead at nine months.

  11. Fairy ice cream sounds like a treat. I hope the redheads got some.
