so I had this eye exam
and after many photos were taken and stinging drops in the eyes to expand the pupils, followed by much flashing of bright lights for the doctor to see the back of the eyes, a discussion was had and decisions were made.
I have overgrown skin above the eyelids, which sags and droops heavily onto the eyelids, making it difficult to "open wide now", so it is impacting my vision.
The operation to fix this is called a Blepharoplasty, which happens under general anaesthetic and both eyes are done at once. Since I don't have anyone available to take me home, it will be done in a hospital so I can stay overnight and then go home alone. It is not allowed to go home alone the same day as general anaesthetic.
Lola will have to manage without me, I'll put out extra kibble and extra water. She'll be fine.
I've been told there will be bruising and swelling and I might look like I've gone ten rounds in a boxing ring, or perhaps just suffered a viscious mugging. But it will be worth it.
I have the operation booked for the end of the month and after all the swelling and bruising is gone, we will discuss the cataract surgery again and possibly set a date for that.
I was asked at my last eye test if overhanging skin over one of my eyes was obscuring my vision. I said no, but I expect it is just a matter of time before gravity will also mean I too need such surgery. Yes, gravity, not sagging old skin.
ReplyDeleteAndrew; I have had this for many years as did my mum before me, so I'm fed up with it. It will be nice to see my eyelids and eyelashes again once this is done.
DeleteThe first steps have been made and I hope that the cataract surgery can follow very quickly.
ReplyDeleteElephant's Child; I hope so too, though I may have to do more saving in between the two.
DeleteSounds great. It is worth the suffering - not personal experience, but close family. And no, being all alone and super-woozy after general anaestesia is not a thing to do!
ReplyDeleteCharlotte; thank you. Super-woozy is why I will stay in hospital overnight and go home next morning.
DeleteI am so sorry to self-advertise, but my latest post is called "Migrants welcome to Australia - Bonegilla". My bloody blog is still showing my last post :(
ReplyDeleteIt will be so nice for you to see properly again. I have a permanently surprised look as I have to raise my eyebrows all the time!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this but I imagine it will be nice to open your eyes again!

ReplyDeleteAn acquaintance of mine had this done for similar reasons after a couple of near misses driving when his vision was obscured. But he was so afraid people would think it was cosmetic surgery that he insisted on calling it eye surgery instead of eyelid surgery! We didn't see him again till the swelling went down, so vain!
ReplyDeleteI am so relieved you can stay overnight in the hospital, where the staff can "keep an eye on you!"
