The Big Day has arrived

As you read this, I will be in a deep anaesthetic sleep (Thursday morning) as I undergo a procedure known as a Belpharoplasty. On both eyes.

This is where excess/overgrown skin is cut away from above the eyelids. I have had this for years and it is getting heavier, reducing the vision by quite a bit as I cannot fully open my eyes.

I haven't seen my eyelids or my eyelashes in several years, so it is time I had it taken care of. There will be stitches, some swelling and maybe a bruise or two and also blood in the tears for a few days.

After the healing, which takes a few weeks, I will be able to have the cataracts removed, but one eye at a time for that as I still need to be able to see. At the moment I still manage to read reasonably easily, on blogs and kindle where I can enlarge the font.

Newspapers are a different story, they use a much smaller font than in previous times, to be able to squeeze all the news on fewer pages because paper is so expensive I guess. For that I use a magnifying glass, which isn't fun, but less strain on the eyes.

Most likely I will not have my usual "Wednesday's Words on a Friday" post this week.

    1. Iris; I was hoping for no pain and that's what I got. None at all, just brusing and blood teardrops which has stopped already, though I was told it could last up to ten days. I have stitches and some bruising, but no swelling, which is a surprise.

    1. Val; I bounced back so quickly I surprised a couple of nurses who thought they needed to escort me to the bathroom, they weren't expecting me to be so steady on my feet and pain free.

    1. Elephant's Child; it all was very gentle and I am happy to be home again. I have "steri-strips" covering the stitches and once they fall off I should be able to fully open my eyes.

  7. Functional eye lids and no cataracts are essential. It would be awful losing any part of the body, but losing vision would be awful.
    Be healthy!

    1. Mike; get them done! If you leave it too late you will be blind, then how will you blog? I'm happy to still be seeing you all here and will get my own cataracts taken care of as soon as the eyelids are fully healed.

  12. Good luck R. Yes, you will have bruising, but the good side is you will be able to see better, even better still when the cataracts are done on both eyes, takes time but all worth it.

    1. jabblog; thank you, no pain and very little discomfort. I am not allowed to get the stitches wet, so can't wash my face as usual, but with a flannel to do around the eyes.

  15. It's rough undergoing 'procedures', especially when you are older, but that is what we have to do.

    1. Andrew; I'm surprised how gentle this was, I woke up quite alert with no pain and was able to walk steadily. I had to stay overnight because they don't allow you to go home alone right after anaesthetic and I had no one to pick me up. The hospital bed wasn't comfortable so I was glad to be home yesterday. Next round: cataract surgery, one eye at a time. Then I'll get that skin check I've been putting off.
