today's the day!

The annual baking of Christmas mince pies begins.

Right after lunch. (procrastinator that I am)

I'm going to have to clear the kitchen and work in that tiny space though, someone else has claimed the table:

wouldn't want to disturb her now, would I. Not after the hour long cuddle that got her so sleepy.

  1. Mince pies! That sounds so lovely, and so traditional, it's something i wish i knew how to make (along with a booze soaked fruitcake and a figgy pudding).

    1. messymimi; they are lovely and so much nicer than shop bought ones. The mince is fruit, not meat, just in case you didn't know.

  2. You're very industrious, River. Good on you. I'm not...I've bought my fruit mince tarts...and will buy a couple more packs between now and Christmas.

Making my cakes is about as industrious and energetic I will get. I'm doing my best to ignore Christmas this year...ans so far am being reasonably successful...after all...only me and my two furry mates will be spending the day (the whole Festive Season) together.

I will be attending my landlords' annual Christmas party which is being held on the evening of the 21st. I'll be taking with me large antipasto platter, along with a cheese, fruit and nut platter, and a bottle of wine.

Lola just gave me a sneaky wink...she is pretending to be asleep! (Remy and Shama are both still curled up asleep on "our" bed). :)

    1. Lee; I dislike the shop bought pies so much it's almost a hate. I have cut down on the amount I make though. no more six dozen days for me, my hands hurt far too much. Apart from the pies, I'd like to ignore Christmas too, it's really only fun when there are kids in the house.

  3. Mince pies...mmmmm. My mom made the ingredients for mince pies, and they were incredible. I wrote a post for that experience. https://thecontemplativecat.blogspot.com/2017/12/memories-may-be-beautifulbut-sad.html

    1. Grace; these are fruit mince pies, sold in shops here and in the UK every year at Christmas. I don't like the bought ones, so I make my own and I make them small, a bit less than half the size of the shop ones which seem to be getting bigger and more awful (in my opinion) each year. Almost like little tarts, about 1 1/2 inches across.

    2. My mother always made mince pies around the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays, I was the only one who really loved them, probably because they are not super sweet. You could buy the filling in a jar at the supermarket, and yes, fruit mince even tho we called them ‘mince meat’ pies.

    1. peppylady (Dora); these are small individual pies, very small about 1 1/2 inches across and the filling is fruit mince which I know many of you in America don't know about. It's an English tradition that has carried on out here.

  6. I'm not familiar with mince pies. Could you compare it to a flavor I might recognize? Lola looks TOO comfortable. Perhaps it's best to let sleeping cats lie, and put off those mince pies until tomorrow!

    1. Val; the filling is minced, spiced fruit, apple, sultanas (golden raisins to you) currants, cinnamon, cloves, treacle and so on. I make tiny little pies, they're a snack, a Christmas treat, not a family sized meal pie. Can't be done tomorrow, I have to post them off to the recipients in the morning.

    2. That sounds delicious from the description! Just seeing "mince pies" did not give me the full appreciation of flavors.

  7. Yay. And your mince pies are GOOD. Today I made shortbread. As gifts for those who do not like boozy fruit cake. I hope to have finished baking for a while.

  8. Elephant's Child; they are GOOD, but a little messy this year, my hands have been hurting so much, I didn't take as much care as usual. I also tried something new, a little cinnamon in the flour when I made the pastry. I'll be posting them in the morning, so have your spoon read in case they get crushed along the way.

  9. I am now leaving the internet, you've reminded me I have a piece of cheesecake in the fridge. It's been there all day, all day and never did my stomach remind me but you did dear River.

    1. JahTeh; I'm so sorry. I didn't mean it. Please come back. Was the cheesecake nice? I haven't had any cheesecake since last summer.

  10. Mince pies are such a flavor of Christmas; I'm surprised they are so out of favor here. I haven't even had one handed off to me in some time.

    1. Joanne; maybe you could buy some and hand them around. Or buy a jar of fruit mince and make your own. Does Laura know how to make sweet pastry?

  11. To think I have steered away from mince meat pies all these years not knowing they were actually fruit. Never too old to learn. Thanks.

    1. Arkansas Patti; you should probably check they are actually minced fruit, because some people make minced meat pies that are meat because it's cheaper than diced steak or whatever meat usually goes into pies.

  12. I make mincemeat pies at Christmas or New Year's (depending on how well my schedule is going) and they do have meat in them. But I've had fruit mince tarts which sound like they are similar to yours, and they are superb. I'm sorry to hear your hands are hurting. It takes a lot of the fun out of baking. I can no longer make some of the recipes I used to make because I can't grip the spoon comfortably to cream the butter and sugar together or stir a thick mixture. Ah well, I'd only eat it all anyway!

    1. jenny_o; we have mincemeat pies out here, made with meat, they are larger than tarts, fully enclosed with pastry and most often bought at footy matches or other sports gatherings. They're a favourite lunch for many people too, usually with a squirt of tomato sauce. I personally don't like them.
My fruit mince pies are tiny, fully enclosed in pastry, unlike a tart which is often open or latticed.

    1. Margaret-whiteangel; I have made them, and sent some to friends in other states, and kept a few for myself. Next weekend the whole process gets repeated for the family's pies.
