gosh, life is just so dang hard sometimes...(tongue firmly in cheek here)

When you come home after a long hard day of aimlessly wandering around, you don't want the first thing you do to be changing a light globe.

But I had to.

I got inside, flipped the switch and the globe made a nice little popping sound and I was left standing in the gloom of a rainy afternoon.

So I shucked out of my jacket, shifted a three ton coffee table and went out to bring in a two ton ladder. Got that positioned under the fitting, climbed up and realised I was too far under the fitting.

To reach the globe I would have to reach up and back, not a good idea at the top of a ladder which I had already fallen from a couple of times previously. So down I went, repositioned the ladder, climbed up and changed the globe.

I keep plenty of spare globes at all times, I just hate being left in the dark and knowing it is my own fault.

Put the ladder back out in the porch, moved the coffee table back into place, and dang if that thing wasn't heavier moving back than it was moving it out.

And all this before I could get a cup of coffee! Because there is nowhere to sit in the kitchen.....and who drinks coffee standing up?

  1. Very frustrating, indeed. All my globes are now long-life LEDs...so hopefully they do what they're supposed to do and last as long, if not longer as they're supposed to last!

No one stands up to drink coffee other than actors in TV shows where it always appears the coffee cups/mugs are empty! ;)

    1. Lee; I'm hoping to change to LEDs and I saw some in the supermarket, but the wattage appears low and I need bright light to see without getting a headache. I buy the highest wattage halogen I can and with the old style globes I had 100 watt ones in the kitchen and lounge. Also the halogens are $6 for two and LEDs are $20 each!

    2. You will find, River, that the low wattage LEDs are very bright. When you buy them...go for the "warm" light, otherwise they can be very, very bright. The wattage is very different to the old style globes. Discuss it with the shop assistant, or with your daughter...they'll explain it all to you. :) You definitely will not need 100 watt.

    3. Shop assistant?? We're talking supermarkets here, those assistants know nothing.
I'll have to save for the LEDs, meanwhile I have about a dozen halogens stashed in the cupboard. When I get the LEDs I'll have warm in the bedroom and kitchen and cool in the lounge where I really need the bright light.

  2. .. glad you had spare globes River... it's annoying when one dies on you...
I like to sit with my coffee too.. tastes better that way.. hugs... Barb xxx

    1. Barbara; I always have globes on hand. Mine burn out fairly fast because I have a light on in the lounge all the time. I do most of my living in that room and need to see without squinting. not enough daylight comes in during the winter and in the summer I often have the curtains drawn to keep the heat out. Coffee definitely tastes better when sitting down.

  3. You have fallen from ladders? Not good to hear. I am increasingly wobbly and really don't like changing light bulbs. Needs must. We too always have spares.

    1. Elephant's Child; completely accidental, but could have been avoided. here it is: usually when I need to reach something, I get the small stepladder with only two steps, so when I'm finished I step down, down and to the floor. The worst fall was when I had the big ladder and was four steps up, rehanging the curtains I'd washed. I forgot and stepped down, down, then stepped for the floor, which wasn't there because I was still two steps up. I didn't land flat, but sort of caught myself and stumbled hard, backward into a bookshelf, then the table which got pushed aside with my momentum and finally coming to rest against the wall. Took me ages to catch my breath and I had a bruise or two, but was okay. The second time, same thing, except I was out in the porch cleaning an inch of cat hair off the top ledge of Angel's tower, and again stepped down twice then stepped for the floor which wasn't there. That time I did land flat but caught myself on several things on the way down so landed more slowly than if I'd just fallen. Again, no injury except being winded. Now I'm much more careful, looking down to each step as I descend and I haven't washed the curtains again.

  4. I recently bought 6 led lights that are 60 watt equivalent, bright white, for $18.95 (USD) they were on sale at Amazon. They are SUPER bright, dazzling even. LEDs are brighter than other types of bulbs and if you like bright then get the daylight/bright white versions.

    1. Grace; 6 for under $20 is a real bargain. Here in Australia they're far more expensive. I'm going to start saving so I can get some when my stock of halogens runs out. Or before that if I can, then the halogens can be spares or used in the lamps.

  5. It's a pain having to change light bulbs but even more of a pain to be left in the gloom. Be careful - ladders are dangerous . . . ;-)

    1. jabblog; I have two lamps in opposite corners of the room but neither shines directly on the table which is where I need the light. They'll do in a pinch, but I prefer a bright overhead light. I should probably put danger stickers all over the ladder (*~*)

  6. I won't climb ladders anymore. Tape a not to the taller ladder - reminding yourself it's a four step. Who knows, it may help.
LED lights are brighter - DH put them in the kitchen for me and they really help with mature eyes.

    2. S.J.Qualls; I avoid the big ladder unless I really need to get up high; if I can I'll call someone to help me, but often there isn't anyone available just at the right moment. I'm definitely going to save and get the LEDs. I have an LED torch and it's brilliant, but purse sized so not large enough to substitute as an overhead light.

  7. Happy to hear that no falling was involved this time. Lee is right about the wattages being different on the new bulbs. I have converted all my lights and it is confusing as to what wattage and if I need warm or cool. I don't do well with lots of choices.

    1. Cheryl; I was much more careful this time, actually looking down to each step as I descended. I knew about the wattages being different, but there's no indication on the boxes as to what the new wattage equals in the old terms. On the halogen boxes the wattage for example 42w =60w is clearly stated.
I do know I need cool in the lounge room where I spend most of my time, the other two rooms can have warm light.

  8. I know exactly what you mean. I just changed the light bulb in the ceiling at the tip of the stairs. That was spooky. I am waiting for someone to be near me when I put the globe back on.

    1. Belva; I have no stairs so that's a bonus for me and even if I did, I think I would install wall lighting that I could reach instead of an inaccessible overhead. There's just too much danger involved there.

  9. Only those in a hurry drink coffee standing up - not how one truly enjoys a good cup.

Be safe on that ladder xx

    1. Vicki; agreed. Coffee can only truly be appreciated sitting down preferably by a fire with a wonderful view through a nearby window.

  10. For a start I don't get up on ladders thats what the beer fairy is for of anyone else, because I not a heights person like my feet on the ground as much as possible
Many simular things here, we have a very heavy coffee table they must have been on special when we were buying, and our light blew last night but it was a lamp so no climbing involved but big search for a globe that fitted not found any where so must remember to buy one next time in Parramatta.
