Sunday Selections # 682

Long ago, Kim of Frog ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.

The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I join in as do a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.

Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.

Several people have shown their Toby Jugs recently, so here are mine:

this one given to me by my mother who told me it was valuable so I should never sell it

this is the marking on his base, I'm not so sure about him being valuable, but I would never sell him anyway.

this glossy taller one sitting on a beer keg was found in a thrift shop priced at only $5

here is a side view

and the marking on his base.

my Hoya has flowered again! it's been five years since I last saw a blossom on it and this one is high in a tree where I don't usually look, about four feet above the pot holding the plant.

my Bee Hotel has several of the tubes occupied though I have never seen any bees near it (they have a hive inside the big White Cedar tree)

as I took the photo above a red and black wasp flew into the top tube pictured here, so quickly I didn't catch him/her with the camera, just buzzed right by my extended arm.

the Bee Hotel is fixed to a board attached to the plum tree and has this metal bee attached

she has lost her eyes, they are buried somewhere in the mulch below

the ladybug on the same board

still has her eyes

as does the cricket on the back of the board.

here is the full view of him

another ladybug lives on this larger pot that holds cuttings of Gollum, a member of the Crassula (Jade) family

Olga on the left, chickens in the middle and Roscoe (dog) and Rosie (cat) over on the right have all been a little buried in the new mulch spread around all the gardens here recently.

another mural from Melbourne Street in North Adelaide

goes from the front of the store

almost all the way to the back

can you spot the cleverly disguised drain pipe?

painted by "Nicky Create" and very nicely too. This is one of my favourite murals.

here are the girls getting settled in the swing at the park

and having a wonderful time.

  1. The mural in Melbourne St is impressive. I like the idea that flowers and vines can be easily extended to cover long walls.

    1. hels; thank you. I like the flowers and vines idea too, so much less restrictive when it comes to expanding the work.

  2. Bonus points to the muralist for hiding the pipe so effectively! I wouldn't even have thought of it if you hadn't pointed it out. Funny how the first toby jug just says "foreign." You'd think they'd want to tell you where it was made, rather than simply "not here." (And is it "foreign" in Australia, or "foreign" in England? Or Japan? Who knows.)

    1. Steve Reed; I like murals that hide day to day features so well you hardly notice them. I think the first Toby Jug is probably one of many mass produced in a factory somewhere, perhaps a place where the workers get paid the absolute minimum allowed, while the sellers reap the profits.

  3. The floral mural is gorgeous. As are the twins. Our hoya is flowering again too. And our bee hotel has no bees.

    1. Elephant's Child; I love the flower murals and if I had a house I might get a garden wall painted like that. The twins are little bundles of energy and my great grandson is too, I spent time with family yesterday and got to hold him for a few minutes before he changed laps again. He is walking now and on the go constantly.
I have found that very few Bee Hotels actually attract bees, mostly they have spiders or wasps.

    Those are beautiful murals.

The girls look so happy, I'm glad they are enjoying adventures like swinging.

    1. messymimi; thank you, I have rearranged a few pots out there so I can now walk around with my camera and not trip over things. The girls love just about everything.

  8. I love all your tin bugs and beetles. The mural is nice. I will ask our friend who knows about such china matters about the toby jug given to you by your mother.

    1. Andrew; thank you, I like my garden bits and pieces too. The mural is impressive. It will be interesting to know more about the Toby Jug.

  9. I like all your bugs - great fun.
The mural is beautiful, a lovely way to brighten up a building.
I always think those swings look such fun and the little girls are really enjoying themselves.

    1. jabblog; the best part is these bugs don't bite and don't eat the plants. I like nicely painted murals, they are much better than scrawled gaffiti and just "tags". The girls love all the play equipment.

  10. Wow, this is embarrassing... I had to google Toby Jug!
I never heard of it before, and yes, things given by our Mums we keep - they have their own value.
    Your Hoya is beautiful!
Kind of you to have such a hotel - our balcony is too small/I get nervous with bees or other insects near by...
But I have a bee right here as key holder, and also earrings - I sure do value bees!
Not their stings, though (happened once when I grabbed a "dead" sunflower to get it to the compost).
Oh, you remind me... I have fake eyes (but too small for your bee). The others are very cute, too. The Cricket reminds me of Flip, Bee Maya´s friend!
Olga? She is Russian? ;-) I really hope the Russian people stand up against their stupid "leader"...
Murals "belong" to the lady who sent you Cookie ;-) Reckon she´d be happy about some from your city where her hubby worked years ago and she did FiFo...
    Give it a thought?
Hehe, I remember Big Niece in such a thing... she was scared. Again: Having a twin is a blessing! To a happy rest-Sunday and happy Easter!

    1. Iris; nothing to be emarrassed about, I had never heard of Toby Jugs until my mum gave me one.
The hoya is lovely and even nicer when it has a whole lot of blooms at once, but that rarely happens now.
I hoped to get bees and planted "bee friendly flowers" but none of them grew. So the hotel has other insects instead. Everybody needs a home, right? My older daughter has bees and even has jars of honey from them. my younger girl, "no-one" has a hive but no bees yet, she has to wait until some are ready for delivery.
Olga is Swedish and she likes her job of caring for those two roosters. she has been doing it for years now.
I think the girls would be just as adventurous even if they weren't twins, my great grandson is the same, tries everything! No fear. He is one year old and walking now.

    2. Isn´t it crazy what we do not know of traditions in other countries? I sure know the Matryoshka dolls, but not these? I hope bees find their way to you and wow on really getting honey from them!
Ah, Olga sounds Swedish, too, right!
Speaking of... the big Niece is chicken ;-)
And Bro sent me a pic... even Ingo didn´t recognize her! Strange (haven´t seen in in two years).

  11. I have never seen a Toby Jug, nor a bee hotel. Of course I'm a fan of the ladybugs! And the little swingers, too!

    1. Val; I put the ladybugs just for you and The Pony. Bee Hotels were a big thing here about five-six years ago, I saw them everywhere, but not so many now. I think people were afraid wasps might get in them. I had never even heard of Toby Jugs until my mum gave me that little one. The little swinging girls had a great Easter weekend.

  12. I don't know what is going on with blogger of late, but I'm having loads of hassles with it. I posted a response here yesterday, Sunday, but, as one can see, it hasn't appeared for some unknown reason.

Have a good week ahead, River. I hope you've enjoyed your Easter weekend. Take care...my cuddles, as always to lovely Lady Lola. :)

    1. Lee; my comments on other blogs are disappearing all over the globe. I had a lovely weekend, spent time with my oldest at her home and met the great grandson who is now one and walking. Also met my grandson's dog who is almost as big as a small pony.
