Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words/prompts are supplied by ME (river) and can be found right here

This week's words/prompts are:

1. poised 2. reef 3. crashing 4. bridge 5. wrecked 6.turquoise 7. glitter

My story this week is a new chapter in an old long-running story: some of you might remember Tom and Shark Cove?

Tom stood poised near the edge of the cliff, camera in hand, gazing down at the beach area. From this height, even with the tide in, he could clearly see the ring of jagged rocks that gave the small town its name, Shark Cove. He focused his camera and snapped a few shots using old fashioned black and white film. He made sure to get the bridge in at least one shot and the waves crashing against the outer reef in a couple more.

He thought about the ship that had been wrecked there so long ago that most people didn’t even remember its name. Much of the wreckage lay on the ocean side of the reef, but Ed and Sara Saunders had told him there had once been a crew using the wreckage inside the reef to teach snorkeling and tank diving a few summers ago. Tom thought he might like to try that for himself.

The sun came out from behind the clouds and laid a glitter carpet on the wind ruffled turquoise waters inside the reef and Tom reached for the new digital camera to get a colour shot or two before the clouds closed in again.

It was late autumn now and after the revelations of that night he and Stephanie Hammer shared long lost memories, Detective Inspector Stanley Grace and his partner Detective Fargo, had returned to the city to gather all the old files pertaining to this cold case from the past, and to arrange a place to stay for Bernice Garrett when, or if, they could convince her to come to the city and tell as much as she knew about the night four year old Tom was kidnapped after his Mother, Cherie, had been killed. Bernice's mind was quite scattered after many years living alone on her mountain, but any information that might be gleaned could prove useful.

Tom and Stephanie would be required to stay in the city for a time too and almost everyone involved was wondering if any light at all could be shed on the disappearance of Tom’s father, Frank Kendall. Tom himself could remember no more than a loving man who smiled a lot.

  1. Ooh, intriguing. I bet Shark Cove has a tale or two to tell, as well.

    1. jabblog; there are a few secrets in Shark Cove, but mostly from "outsiders" who brought trouble with them.

  2. My daughter would love to visit Shark Cove. She is a big fan of sharks.

    1. Mr Shife; it is a fictional place and doesn't have any actual sharks, the name comes from a ring of shark tooth shaped rocks edging the bay and only visible at extreme low tides. Or from a great height such as up on the cliff.

  3. I do remember the story line, but not all of it. When I have a moment, I'll read back.

Thanks for picking up the old story, it sounds like a good mystery to solve.

    1. messymimi; rescued from spam. I've been wanting to write more of Tom's story, but it's difficult after all these years. I may have developed too many characters.

  5. Hopefully, Bernice will agree to come to the city, and perhaps remember information that can allow Tom some closure concerning his parents.

    1. Val; Bernice will need a lot pof persuading, she saw things years ago and now is afraid, but I think they talk her into it.

  6. Oh, if it wasn´t for wearing glasses (and hating contact lenses) I´d be SO in to investigate on the wreck!
In Cottesloe was a shark-safe zone. Where did many people swim?
To remembering only the good when your parents had to leave... Very nice thought.

    1. Iris; I would love to learn diving and investigate wrecks, but it can't happen with my asthma. So I watch movies and read books about shipwrecks and treasure instead.

  7. I wish I had more of a back story. Will back later.

  8. I remember reading about Tom and Shark Cove but I'm not quite remembering what I read. This sounds like something interesting is coming, about Tom's father and kidnapping of old Tom. I guess Old Tom is not Tom's father since his name is Frank or am I wrong?

    Have a lovely day.
