Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words/prompts are supplied by David M. Gascoigne and can be found here

This week's words/prompts are:

1. profligacy 2. fundamental 3. least 4. people 5. satisfaction

and/or:

1. excited 2. natural 3. trashed 4. fragile 5. future

Also including Charlotte's colour of the month which is bright orange red for May.

Here is my story:

Driving along the highway behind DI Grace the next afternoon, Tom thought about his past. Many people would say it is a person’s fundamental right to know where they came from and though Tom was excited to learn more, he wasn’t so sure knowing more about the intervening years between his real parents and his foster parents would bring much satisfaction. He remembered some of the early school years where it seemed his future was fragile at best, trashed at worst, then the relief of Robert and Vanessa, who accepted him as he was and helped him grow into the man he was now. He supposed, at the very least, it was natural to want to know more about the missing two years between his Shark Cove fourth birthday and the first days of school at age six.

The road curved through a stand of trees in their final autumn colours, the golden yellows and bright orange-reds of the leaves contrasting starkly with the already bare black branches of some. There wouldn’t be time to stop and take photos, but maybe this time next year he could return. He wondered where he might be a year from now. Would he still be in the city sorting out his past? Would he be back at the farm with Robert and Vanessa? Would he be somewhere else entirely? He made a mental note to buy more film for his camera, Rpb and Vanessa might like to see the city sights through his photos.

  1. I hope the things Tom finds out will not upset him. I'm sure, though, that he's strong enough to withstand any unpleasant shocks.

    1. jabblog; there will be things that upset him, but like you said, he is strong enough to handle things and come through it.

  2. I hope Tom makes his way. And is or stays happy. My Brother and I for years had doubts our Dad is our biological Dad. He was, I have his hands I saw when he had passed (he was always moving).
But in the end... does it matter if you are loved?

    1. Iris; Tom was born with a happy nature so he will always make his way and be alright, but trying to find out who killed his parents and why is going to be hard. He has his foster parents and the elderly couple who run the Scenic Retreat, they knew him as a four year old and recognised him when he turned up there at twenty.

    1. Elephant's Child; I am too. I want to get into the nitty-gritty hard parts of his story, but don't really know how. my own life has been easy so there is nothing in me to draw upon for inspiration.

  4. If he's ready to find out, I hope he does and can make peace with what happened to him.

    1. messymimi; I think he is ready to find out, mostly the why part since he already knows his mother was killed, but also he wants to know if there has been any news of his father who has not been seen since that night. I know what happened to Frank but can't fit it into the story yet.

    1. MMM; I don't watch shows like that. Tom will find his way, he has his foster parents who have cared for him since he was twelve.

  7. Inspired story and makes us think!
Difficult situations for sure, but there are always worse ones.
Tom has power and he will use it.
    Have a nice day!
