Sunday Selections # 283

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week we are still in gardens, but not mine.

remember "no-one's" first jade flower? A couple of weeks ago now.

one week later and the little bush was almost covered in tiny stars.
My own bush here is yet to flower :(
it does have buds this year, so I'm hopeful :)

in a different garden, there are mushrooms growing in the dead space under a giant buddleia

several clumps of them, and in the lawn there too.
Here on my side of town, there are also lawns I see on my way to and from bus stops, that have groups or long lines of mushrooms growing in them.

Out of the gardens now,

Have you ever really looked closely at autumn leaves
On the trees, they're fabulous shades of reds, golds, russets, but on the ground, piled against fences and drifting along gutters, do you notice them?

they're not just brown piles of potential mulch.

they are brown and red,

or brown and tawny gold.

this one which seems mostly red,

is red and gold.

there are speckled ones,

**striped ones,

even chevrons.

those who think of autumn as the dull season just need to take the blinkers off.

** I must have taken two dozen shots of this leaf to get just one where the green stripe showed clearly enough and the leaf wasn't blurred. Even this shot doesn't show the true colour, the back end, near the stem is shades of yellow red and green.

  1. Cool little bush with all the tiny flowers! I've never seen one. I've got mushrooms growing in my back yard too - one would think it's too hot and dry for them, but I stumbled across them this morning.

Autumn leaves are indeed more beautiful than the green leaves of summer. (Although I like to see those green leaves, too.)

    1. S.J.Qualls; that little bush will eventually be taller and wider than me. I planted four in pots in front of her west facing lounge room window so they would grow up and create a little shade and cool for her. I love the leaves of all seasons.

  2. Love the jade bush. I have not had success with them. And yes, to the patterns and range of colours on autumn leaves. Always a treat.

    1. Elephant's Child; jades are a bit like frangipani, they like the heat and sunshine, prefer not to get too wet. They start off slow, you put one in and it appears to do nothing, then one day you look and it's knee high.

  3. A variation on, stop and smell the roses. Stop and look at the leaves. Do you think Autumn is late this year? I do, with still some leaves on trees into July.

    1. Andrew; yes, autumn is late, the summer warmth held on far too long, which I didn't mind too much since the winds and nights were much cooler. do you stop and look at the leaves?

    2. I do stop and look at some things, but not usually leaves.

  4. Only yesterday I was thinking I should perhaps get another box of compost-mushroom spawn to grow my own. I've done so a couple of times, but that's a few years ago now. I love mushrooms.

I hope you have a great week, River...cuddles to Angel. :)

    1. Lee; I'm a late bloomer when it comes to mushrooms. For years all I knew was the soggy black mess of "butter mushrooms" in a can that my stepfather liked to eat on toast. I don't remember any type of mushrooms at all in my early childhood diet. Now I buy white caps, swiss browns and portobellos for various recipes.

  5. Flowers are rare in a winter garden, next door has a pot of star flowers out the front .
I have a few plastic ones flowering at the moment.
    I do like winter leaves.

    1. Merle; plastic flowers are great, they flower all the time and never need watering. Although a shower to remove dust is beneficial once a year.

    1. Barbara, autumn is my favourite season, gorgeous leaf colours and sunny days without the heat of summer.

  7. Our large jade bush is in flower right now. Got a little damage when trees were removed but still beautiful.
Fantastic to have mushrooms grow so readily if they are the edible ones. Years and years ago a neighbour 'planted' some mushroom spores and they came up in our back yard!!! We shared them of course.

  8. Mimsie a full grown jade in full flower is gorgeous.
We're pretty sure the mushrooms are the edible kind, they look just like the shop ones, but no one is game to try them, just in case.

  9. Are they the type of mushroom you feed to a dissident spouse?.

  10. Vest; we don't know what kind they are. They look just like the supermarket ones and could very well be edible.

  11. Lovely images.
Yes, I always look intently at autumn leaves. Their beautiful palette of colours. They have my heart.

  12. Vicki; I look at them and scuff through piles of dry ones, but haven't noticed the variegated colours so clearly until this year when the chevron one dropped onto my shoe as I waited for a bus.
