Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words/prompts are supplied by Elephant's Child and can be found here

This week's words/prompts are:

Here is my story:

Peter muttered to himself as he splashed on through the rain. “I don’t understand how this happened. My life wasn’t meant to turn out this way. I had dreams. I had plans. Now all I have is this bedroll and the clothes on my back.” He shuffled past the cemetery, noting the preponderance of Stone Angels amongst the headstones.

He thought back to yesterday, when he had passed a bookshop on Main Street, many of the featured books in the windows had Angels on their covers, or the word Angel in their titles. “I’m tired,” he mumbled, “If I was still a working man I’d say I need a holiday.”

He adjusted the bedroll, which had been slipping a bit, the straps that held it were old and worn. “Just like me,” he thought and gave a silent chuckle. The rain fell heavily now and he could no longer see the horizon. “Time to stop for the day,” he said to no one but himself. Who else would be out in this weather?  He slipped through the cemetery gates and headed towards the small shelter shed with the map on the back wall, showing the roads and numbers of the graves.

Peter spread the rolled blankets, lay down and wrapped himself in them, after first folding his wet coat to use as a pillow. He wondered if seeing so many Angels was a coincidence, or a message from above. Perhaps it was time at last for him to sleep forever and his soul to join his beloved Angela in Heaven.
