Sunday Selections # 703

Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.

The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I join in as do a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.

Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.

Beginning with photos from the past, because I haven't been out taking new ones:

for those who haven't seen it yet, this is me holding a koala, almost ten years ago now.

pre-dawn storm clouds rolling in as I walked to work one day

the mini Yoda on one of my keychains, he is about one and a half inches tall, and now most of his green has worn off.

"Aussie Fries" Because we're not French, I haven't seen these in the shops for several years now, possibly a whole decade.

one of the "houses" I had in a previous yard, it got dropped and broken during the move

and the other, smaller house, I still have this one in my back porch

my collection of frogs which made the move successfully and were then broken as workmen here set up scaffolding to paint the exteriors of the flats

Ixias in many colours behind the newly planted Jades, look how tiny those bright green jades are

"there's no business like Gnome business"

"Do not disturb"

Mick and Paddy digging for gold and finding coal, I might paint those rocks one day with my gold paint.

Back to the future now: these clumps of dead roots were the coreopsis I tried to grow, I planned on ripping them out

until I noticed these new leaves. It still looks messy though and if the flowers don't show I will rip it all out.

this baby leaf got badly chewed before it had a chance to unfurl

all the baby lettuces had enough leaves that I could pick a few for a sandwich

these Nordic gnomes were my birthday gifts from the twins, they each gave me one wrapped in paper painted by them.

in the city recently I noticed someone had thrown down some "chilli" favoured crackers which the pigeons seem to be enjoying. I hope their digestive systems didn't rebel....

Finishing with a car crash at a corner close to no-one's home, thankfully no body was hurt.

  1. That's an interesting selection, Sue. I love the koala and the Nordic gnomes. The mining gnomes look happy, but I think they deserve some gold.

    1. jabblog; thank you. I think the gnomes deserve some gold too after all this time.

  2. It's amazing how resilient pigeons are. They'll eat anything. (Which is why they're so successful as a species!)

Love the koala photo. I never realized koalas have such tiny eyes.

    1. Steve Reed; it's true, pigeons eat almost anything. I was surprised at how large and heavy the koala was. They look tiny when you spot one way up high in a tree.

  3. Too bad about your frogs. They were really cute. I've not seen Nordic gnomes. I like that cut-out style. The pre-dawn storm clouds were my favorite this time, having already seen you and your koala buddy before.

    1. Val; the frogs were mostly hidden by the grasses that used to be there, so I can't blame the workmen, and I have the photo at least. Nordic gnomes are the ones that are mostly beards and caps, they appear in the shops around Christmas time. Some are really cute. The pre-dawn storm clouds were beautiful and I remember it was quite warm that morning, a summer storm.

  4. Your koala mate looks very peaceful in your arms. I had assumed most koalas would have run from close contact with humans or other creatures.

    1. hels; the koala photo was taken at the Cleveland Conservation park, they have set times for koala holding and use animals that have become accustomed to it, but making sure they get fed beforehand so they are calm and a bit sleepy.

  5. A lovely selection. I really like your new Nordic gnomes. That koala was quite big - and no doubt heavy.

    1. Elephant's Child; I love the new gnomes too and need to decide where to put them. The koala was quite heavy, like a well-fed toddler.

    1. The Happy Whisk; thank you. We are always glad when no one gets hurt in crashes and hope they have insurance.

  7. St Louis scared away the pigeons from Downtown by bringing in some falcons.

    1. Mike; I'd love to see a few falcons around here but I don't think it will happen.

  8. I liked this selection - mostly because I got to see a picture of you! However, your eyes were hidden by the sunglasses. In contrast I notice that the koala was not wearing sunglasses!

    1. Yorkshire Pudding; thank you. I wear the sunglasses almost everytime I step outside as I get migraines from too much glare. Koalas spend a lot of time sleeping so they don't need sunglasses.

  10. Unless they were hidden in grass or something like that, how terrible of the workers to break the frogs. The koala is a nice memory. I love the space saving Nordic gnomes.

    1. Andrew; the frogs were set amongst the grasses I had at the time. I tried gluing them but they were thin and fragile. I love the gnomes too, just need to decide where to put them.

  11. Yes, I remember that koala-pic :-)
    And that´s a wonderful sky!
Inches, argh ;-) Glad I have a frog here who shows me inches and cm.... your Yoda is very tiny, great perspective, he looks tall!
We have those "fries", they are called "Sticks". They could call them "Yuck" as well ;-)
Frogs, LOL, you´ll find many here, when you come one day to visit. Sad yours got broken.

I think you would not approve and I do not dare, but you can buy gnomes here with pants down and showing off their butt.
I really was thinking of buying one and put it on the balcony. The neighbour-lady does not greet me- because we have a balcony.
They are rich (two condos!) but cannot let a balcony build because our pre-owners were faster.

Oh, lucky you with the plants. No luck at all here this year.
Cute gnomes from the twins! Did you keep the paper?
Nordic, huh. Even on Sundays my work catches up with me ("my" trains have arrived in Oslo by now).
Pigeons here eat anything, we call them flying rats. Some attack people who walk around with food.
Reminds me of Bowling Green Bay National Park, 1995. People fed begging kangaroos with white bread. They got visibly bad stomach pain and...took the next.

My still-teamlead accepts I don´t want to drive as her Brother got injured real bad in such an accident. I hope fE will go on with this.
Once I found a car upside down. I called the ambulance but was not able to look. Quickly two others arrived and in the end the young man made his way out, unhurt.

    1. Iris; thank you, that's my favourite koala picture. I have a tiny, tiny gnome with his pants down and peeing by a tree, he's part of a set with three drunk gnomes and a teeny tiny campfire. I also have a large gnome that used to be my mother's, it is battery operated and whistles as someone walks past him, she used to have it on her front porch.
I did keep the paper from the twins but it got torn a bit when they were helping me unwrap the gnomes.
I will never learn to drive, I am too nervous about all the other traffic on the roads.

    2. Share the pee-guy sometime? I can imagine the whistler!
      Yes, "helping" ;-)
Not just the traffic. (That happened to me four times), Ingo had a tyre that blew up and I got a bird...
So glad I can work from home!!!

    3. Iris; pee-guy is packed away in a box somewhere with a lot of other stuff I packed away, I got tired of always cleaning dust off it all. He is only 2 inches tall.

  12. I often drop into your blog via Andrew's page to read your posts and I also see your comments on others' blogposts but am sorry that I have never commented here before.

The lettuce is a good idea.

  14. What a nice selection of photos!

For a short time, people tried the experiment of putting hot chili powder or other spices in birdseed to try to keep squirrels out of it. Birds cannot taste pepper or hot things, so it wouldn't hurt them, but it was presumed the squirrels wouldn't like it. They did like it, and wanted more. Who knew squirrels were Cajuns?

    1. messymimi; thank you. I didn't now birds cannot taste hot things, it explains why pigeons eat everything. Funny about the squirrels, I would have thought they wouldn't like chilli.
