Words for Wednesday
The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.
The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.
If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.
This month the words/prompts are supplied by River and can be found here
This week's words/prompts are:
1. owls 2. chess 3. telephone 4. crinkle 5. blustery 6. what have you done this time?
Also include Charlotte's colour of the month if you can: Orient Red
Have fun.
We were on the telephone playing chess with a team called the Owls with the blustery winds making the orient red curtains crinkle when an owl said, "What have you done this time?"
ReplyDeleteNeat!
DeleteMike: Pay attention to the owl. They are very wise birds indeed.
DeleteMike; I like it and agree you should pay attention to the owl.
DeleteNicely done!
DeleteWhich move, or can I get to the window to shut it ... which should stop the orient red curtains moving around ... succinct - thanks Mike ... cheers Hilary
DeleteVery clever Mike.
DeleteWill be back to link up, work today.
ReplyDeletemessymimi; I look forward to yur story
DeleteThe two curly-haired moppets are back, they won't tell me their names, but they are ready to pull their next prank.
DeleteHi River and EC ... here's mine:
ReplyDeleteDid you ask me what I'd done this time … well I'll tell you … that chequerboard was too dull, so I've painted it Orient Red and Cauliflower White … now it gleams and our chess games will be much more amusing as we work our way round those colourful squares.
I thought I'd collect owls … they'll loook good on the windowsills … poor Mrs Williams will have more to clean – but … too bad.
I can't seem to telephone at the moment and let you know what I've done or thought about … the wires have crinkled and are now being thrashed about by this blustery wind.
I do wonder sometimes if I'm going mad – but I'm sure not … life is full of games and this is just another one. The owls … I might need to rethink those … perhaps ducks, or warthogs … ah who knows …
Cheers Hilary
Hilary Melton-Butcher: I like the idea of a colourful chessboard. Mrs Williams may accidentally break things if she feels overburdened. I would go with the ducks. She has told me that she likes them but that owls are spooky...
DeleteHilary Melton-Butcher; this is a funny story. I like the red and cream chessboard idea though. I think perhaps Mrs Williams might prefer all dustcatchers to be in a cabinet behind glass. I prefer owls over ducks, my mum had flying ducks on the lounge room wall and I always hated them.
DeleteThe wind whipping the phone and electric lines does seem threatening sometimes.
DeleteNicely done story and the red and white chessboard would certainly stand out.
Thanks EC - I'd go with the warthogs - my favourites! We had a Mrs Williams when I was growing up, who helped my Ma in the house ... memories of 'yonks' ago ...
Delete@River - I thought the change of colour for the chessboard made a change, while yes - behind glass might be useful; how funny about the duck wall paper ... my SIL has them in her kitchen, but only a picture or two ...
@ Messymimi - whipping 'service' lines always dangerous, let alone being a great nuisance to living comfortably ... yes - the chessboard would stand out ... perhaps it should hang as a picture ... cheers to the three of you - Hilary
Exceptional story Hilary
DeleteThanks Granny Annie! ... Cheers Hilary
DeleteHilary Melton-Butcher; it wasn't duck wallpaper it was a set of ceramic ducks hung on the wall.
DeleteSorry River - misread ...
DeleteI am surprised you need to ask. I thought that your magic telephone showed you everything. Don’t go getting blustery with me – or go Orient Red with rage. I have moved the chessboard outside and set it up where the owls can see it. I am sure that they will give me a better game than you anyway. I have set out the crinkle cut chips that you favour for them too. I am looking forward to an evening of great company and fun.
ReplyDeleteElephant's Child; this is lovely. Chess with owls should be an interesting game. I'd forgotten that people can be blustery.
DeleteWell done EC ... a lovely take on a change around at home ... things done differently, but happily. Crinkle cut chips ... these were mentioned in a recipe - being crushed and used as toppers - as long as the chef doesn't come over with horror and blush gory red. Cheers Hilary
DeleteCrinkle cut chips!! Who would have thought it. Loved the story EC

DeleteSometimes you are just done with people and owls would be better company.
DeleteLovely writings, ladies.

ReplyDeleteTwo owls called Twit and Awoo were playing chess when the telephone rang. Twit's feathery brow began to crinkle. Outside the wind was blustery and rain was sheeting down. "What have you done this time?" he asked Awoo. She got up to answer her orient red phone, pleased to discover that it was just another scam call from some call centre in India. As usual, she couldn't tell what the hell they were talking about so advised them to "bugger off" before slamming the receiver down.
ReplyDeleteYorkshire Pudding; I like this, thank you.
DeleteWonderful! Thanks to having the phone number pop up nowadays, I simply don't answer if I don't know who it is, they can leave a message if it's important.
