Thursday Thoughts #13

Another book quote,  from "Summer Knight" one of the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher
(A long one this time).

"Sometimes the most remarkable things seem commonplace.
When you think about it, jet travel is pretty freaking remarkable. You get in a plane, it defies the gravity of an entire planet by exploiting a loophole with air pressure, and it flies across distances that would take months or years to cross by any means of travel that has been significant for more than a century or three.
You hurtle above the earth at enough speed to kill you instantly should you bump into something, and you can only breathe because someone built you a really good tin can that has seams tight enough to hold a decent amount of air.
Hundreds of millions of man-hours of work and struggle and research, blood, sweat, tears and lives have gone into the history of air travel and it has totally revolutionized the face of our planet and societies.
But get on any flight in the country, and I absolutely promise you that you will find someone who, in the face of all that incredible achievement, will be willing to complain about the drinks.
The drinks, people!"

Today's Thought: groomed eyebrows.

How many times have you noticed a movie character or TV personality, news reader, weather girl, tryout singer in an ad for X-Factor, and their eyebrows are beautifully groomed, but uneven

Notice the eyebrows where they begin, near the nose.

How many times have you seen one eyebrow fully half an inch higher than the other?
Don't these people have mirrors?

Carrying on with the mirrors theme, what about people with clothing tags sticking up in the back?
Jacket collars that haven't been straightened so one side is all skewed up while the other is flat?
Zippers unzipped?  Shirts buttoned crookedly?

When I was little, mum taught me to check everything before I left the house. I witnessed her doing the same:
Clothes all smoothed in the back? No petticoat showing? Collars nice and flat? and so on.
We didn't leave the house looking like we'd dressed in the dark in whatever we could drag out from under the bed.

I have to admit, there are plenty of people out there these days who look as if they stepped off the pages of a fashion magazine, pride is making a comeback.

I also have to admit, in all fairness, sometimes I could be mistaken for a bag lady in my house cleaning trackies and less nice t-shirt. (But they are clean and I don't have any labels sticking out at the back of my neck).

Comments

  1. I'm probably guilty of rumpled clothes and poking up tags...it's just the nature of the beast.

  2. I am scruffy - but clean. Except if you catch me in the garden, where I am frequently grubby.

  3. Hi River,

I am an absolute slob around the house, wearing a tatty T shirt and battered old jeans.

    Nowt wrong with that.

    :o)

    Cheers

  4. Delores; I have the rumpled clothes too, I often wear things two or three days in a row, only underwear gets changed daily.

Elephant's Child; I have grubby knees since I get down on them to pick things up, bending over often puts my back wrong, but getting up and down is easy for me. Scruffy is an excellent style choice, I wear it myself a lot. Okay, always.

Plasman; me too. Old clothes is all I have. Old and very old.

  5. So many remarkable things are taken for granted. It's good to stop every so often to reflect on such things with gratitude.
I know I always say a thanks every time I step out of the shower, being ever grateful for hot and cold running water.
    And, flushing toilets...

My mother's generation was neat, tidy and well groomed. When she was "sober", she would be immaculately dressed whenever going out.
No matter how hard I try, I never look well groomed. My hair has a will of its own and spills out when it is up - looking like a birds nest.
Living in the country and working on farms has me always looking little rough around the edges - neatly scruffy ;)
But, there are no exposed tags :)

When in the city, I see many who take pride in their attire. But, I see far too many who take pride a few too many steps further to vanity - guys and girls.

  6. I must admit I looked neater as a kid that I sometimes do now, my mum alway checked us before we were seen in public, I'm not so fussy now.

  7. It depends on the day, the weather, and how my migraine is behaving. Always clean, tho.

  8. Vicki; I say thank you every time I step INTO the shower, thank you to whoever invented the hot water shower! I rarely think of the toilet though, I should be more grateful for that.
No exposed tags here either, but I generally look reasonable, unlike my mum who always changed clothes just to go to the corner shop, then put her house dress back on when she got home. Going to the city meant coat, hat, gloves and handbag with shined shoes. I remember changing shoes and clothes when I got home from school, then putting an apron over my play clothes so they would stay clean all week.

Merle; I still check before leaving the house, usually to see if my hair is tidy and my t-shirt is clean. Sometimes I spill breakfast and don't notice. My neighbour goes anywhere with weetbix spills!

Susan Kane; always clean, but sometimes scruffy. Migraine? I stay home! If I develop one while I'm out, I head home.

  9. I don't pluck my eyebrows. At the most I might have plucked them three times...at the most...when I was much younger.

I always do my best to look presentable when I go out, in a good-casual and neat manner. I guess it could be said I take pride in my appearance when out and about; but around the house I dress just to suit myself and my two furry rascals; and then they don't really care what I wear - so I'll leave that up to your imagination. :)

These days, unless I'm going to somewhere special, the only make-up I use is lipstick. If it's a special event of whatever description I'll put on some light make-up...a bit of eye shadow, liner, mascara, a light dab of foundation and a bit of blush...but only then. I'm not much of a social butterfly these days...so lipstick does the job most of the time!

  10. Lee; I over-plucked years ago and I'm still waiting for them to grow back. I don't bother with make-up at all, using only sunscreen and a 15+ lip balm. I don't worry overly much about my clothes as long as they are clean. Most of my things are so old, they're scruffy anyway, but clean and mended if necessary.

  11. Everyone on tv these days has the same long thin dark eye brows. It's a bit weird. I think the uneven thing is a bit of a thing at the moment as I've noticed it too.

  12. Jackie K; maybe it's supposed to make them look quizzical or cute or something. To me it just looks like they pasted them on crooked.
