I'm back!

After an entire day without power, so no internet, no hot cuppa's, no cooking etc I finally have power again.

I woke up this morning to find the power was out and for a long while thought it was just my area, but I caught the 5pm news on my radio and learned that 93 areas were affected by fallen trees and lines down all over the place! What a nightmare for those with babies and small children!

I had batteries for my old radio and for the camping lamp, also bread and cheese and other things that don't need cooking, so I was okay.

I went to the shop for my newspaper and found they were running on generator to have the checkouts open, but the freezers and dairy fridges were closed off and covered with insulating (I hope) plastic. There will be a major loss for them when all that has to be thrown out.

My power came back on at 5.20pm, but on the TV news just now I've heard many homes are still without and may not have power until tomorrow morning. Also a thunderstorm is predicted for tomorrow morning, so that will make things worse.

I've just had my first hot drink of the day, manna from heaven!

  1. I am glad you have power back again - and feel for those who do not.

    1. Elephant's Child; I feel for them too, mostly those who have babies or toddlers at home all day. It wasn't such a hardship for me with just Lola who sleeps all day anyway.

  2. It's an unpleasant experience and trust it is not too often repeated.

    1. jabblog; we are heading into winter so it's likely to happen at least once more.

  3. Oh! So not nice! I cannot remember anything like that here. But you sure a re right, not only a torch, also a radio is a good idea (we have both, I just need to find the radio!)

    1. Iris; I have small LED torches in every room, but a bigger camping lantern to throw enough light to read by. The radio is one I had in the shoe factory, small but still works well with four batteries, thirty years old it is. When I have power I take out the batteries to save them just for days like this. The worst part for me was not being able to have a hot drink.

  4. One of the things I loathed about Florida was the post-hurricane power outages. Once we were without power for four days. I do not miss that!

    1. Bob; welcome to drifting. I am very glad I do not live in hurricane or earthquake territory.

  5. Yes, well. The privileged inner suburbs will get power back sooner ahead of the starving poor in outer 'burbs.

    1. Andrew; maybe, maybe not, my power came back at 5.20pm, while many other suburbs had to wait until next morning and my suburb certainly isn't "privileged". I do know the western suburbs weren't affected.

  6. This is why I'm glad of a stove with gas burners. Gas has never gone out, even when electricity does. I'm glad you're back in action.

    1. Boud; welcome to drifting. This is why I hate my electric stove, until I moved here I always had a gas stove and if I ever have the chance to move where I will have one again I will move so fast there will be a cloud of dust in my wake.

  7. We haven't had a long power outage in quite a while. When you do have one it is sort of like camping. But the first thing I holler when the power goes out is "DON"T OPEN THE REFRIGERTORS!"

    1. Mike; welcome to drifting. I opened mine to get the cheese out for a sandwich and again to put the cheese away. I left the freezer shut all day but the ice cream melted anyway and I will now have to throw out the chicken and ham I had in there. I'm not risking salmonella for the sake of a few dollars.

  8. Glad you got it back so "soon," and that you weren't affected by a lack of heat or air conditioning. Our outages are much easier to handle when the temperatures are moderate in spring and fall.

    1. Val; I'd heard places were supposed to get power back by 7pm and thought that might include me, so having it back earlier was a nice surprise. I'm glad it didn't happen in the heat of summer, I would have been a very miserable person. On a cold day I can rug up and stay in bed, but summer heat just wipes me out.

  9. I hope everyone has power back on by now where you are. It's not fun, i'm glad you got through it.

    1. messymimi; I'm fairly sure all places now have power back on, but the clean up in some areas is going to take a while. Trees were down all over, crushing cars and fences, blocking roads and taking down power lines as they fell. I hope everyone affected has good insurance.

  10. Goodness, had no idea about the storm over your way. Glad you have your power back. Not having power reminds us of how good it is to have it.

  11. Not so nice. We're lucky to have a gas stove with "bottled gas" (liquid gas?) so we're never out of something hot. But the heat, light etc. all go. This used to happen a lot here before the power cables were made underground. Now not so much, which sure is nice. I almost forgot where I had put candles and matches last time it happened. Only an hour or so. I hope all soon get their power back. m

  12. I am so happy your power is back on. These storms have been horrible. After every power outage I plan to get supplies for the next one and even purchase a generator but so far I haven't done it.

  13. Wow! That's a long time without power. I hope things have settled down, and remain so. Take care
