sunshine....and some Island photos

Image
A couple of days ago the light globe in my kitchen died.  I had spares, (I always have spares),  so got one from the back porch cabinet, dragged the big ladder inside and changed the globe. The new globe is a "warm white" instead of the "cool white' I've become used to. Now every time I flip the switch my kitchen glows yellow as if it is bathed in late afternoon sunshine. It's quite lovely. But enough of that, here are a few photos I took while wandering around Rottnest Island.  this plant was covered in several dozen bees , but I couldn't get a shot of more than one. The little buggers took off as soon as I focused on them. this big tree looks to me like it should be in a spooky kids halloween movie. I like the way these fallen branches have landed against each other to look like a tepee . a pair of crows chattering on a log. a straight cut cliff of sandstone . (or maybe limestone?) a pair of ducks waking up from a nap.

What Irritates You Monday

"What irritates you Monday" is a meme thought up by Delores from The Feathered Nest. Here, on a Monday , we get a chance to vent our little, or not so little, things that irritate us.  It doesn't have to be something on that particular Monday, it can be anything that irritates you any day of any week.    Today, I didn't have any irritations when I woke up, so thought I'd give this a miss, but as the day went on.... It began with the nagging strong ache in my hip and thigh. I've had it for weeks now, so I decided it was time to take some extra panadol, and maybe a couple of anti-inflammatories as well with breakfast. It didn't help at all which didn't really surprise me, so by lunch time I got out the strong pain relief tablets that I get from the chemist and took a couple of those as well. Within an hour I was feeling nauseous from the chemical mix and didn't feel at all like going into town. So why would I?  Well....I w

Sunday Selections # 130

Image
Welcome back to Sunday Selections! This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs. The rules are very simple:- 1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title 2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post 3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted. 4. hop on over to The Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos. Kath and Andrew often join in as well. I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I'm showing some of the photos I took in and around the Round House at Arthur Head, Fremantle.  There is a website here which has lots of information and photos if you'd like to know and/or see more. In the past I suspect most of my links haven't worked, I think I've fixed that now...

This one is for Pearl....... and several other friends

Image
My good friend Pearl recently commented that Australia must be huge. She's right of course, it is. Today, Pearl gets to see just how big we are downunder. and of course my other American and Canadian reader friends.  Dave  and Gary from the UK too. you Texans think Texas is big? Well, yes, it is, but check this out.... (not bragging, just saying...) the dark shadowed area is Texas, the white patch down below is Singapore, with Kuala Lumpur marked. Up on the right is a bit of the UK. also white. Here, I'll give you a closer look, part of Texas, the UK and Ireland too. The lighter grey area surrounding all of these is Western Australia. Just one of our six states and one territory.  Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. Here's the whole thing. These photos were taken inside one of the cells in The Round House, I'll show you more of that tomorrow. I don't know why t

Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays , Delores , from A Feathered Nest has a meme which she calls  "Words for Wednesday". She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, if we are able. Sometimes I look at her words and nothing at all comes to mind. This week's words are:   filter   squash   sour dancing muscle breakthrough Here is my short story: As the music took over her soul, Janet danced as if every muscle she had was weightless. She'd had a breakthrough , finally mastering that new move Ms. Gina had been teaching them. Her mind filtered out everything but the music and the dancing .  When she eventually stopped for a break, Janet was grateful for the lemon squash her Mum had packed into her snack bag. She took several sips of the delicious sour ness before crunching into the shiny red apple.  Her thoughts drifted again to the dance and the feathery black and gold costumes Ms. Gina had described to them.

Rottnest Island Beach

Image
Well, one of them. It's an Island, so there are beaches all around. These photos are from the one right near where the ferry dropped us off and then picked us up again. As we sat under a tree eating lunch, I noticed the weathervane..... it has a Quokka on it! R and I walked along behind some of the accommodation buildings, then turned to the beach and walked back along the sand and rocks to the pier where we'd wait for the ferry. lo and behold! there were pelicans . They followed us most of the way back to the pier. Halfway along, I turned back and took this postcard shot. Then I started seeing smaller things. like this coral and that coral and a pretty shell . I saw piles of seaweed .... and smaller pieces of a different type of seaweed . do you all know those round blobs of sea jelly that get washed up on shore? They're clear, mostly, but the one I saw wasn't... it had a face! something was embedded in it and I ju
