Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, Delores, from Under The Porch Light, has a meme which she calls

“Words for Wednesday”.

She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, or a poem.

I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. boreal  (meaning:arctic; glacial; freezing)
2. rocky
3. tempest
4. lake
5. rising
6. breathe

and this phrase: the summer rain washed her face with bitter tears

Here is my story:

The summer rain washed her face with bitter tears.
Her tormenters had left and she was alone again.
She wasn't like them, but that didn't give them the right to tease and torment every time they saw her.
Even in school or on the streets in town, those privileged snobs couldn't leave her alone.

Anya sat on the rocky shore of the lake trying to breathe steadily, trying to stay calm, as she had during the teasing, but she could feel the change happening.

Flowing from her heart and mind was a boreal cloud, chilling everything in its path as it spread across the lake towards the town. Her breath came faster, becoming a wind, whipping up the waves on the lake. Clouds gathered, heavy and black, the steadily rising wind made by Anya an indicator of the tempest to come.

Anya directed the storm to the northern end of the town, the 'rich' end, where those girls lived in supreme comfort.
Anya's eyes flashed lightning as she unleashed her mighty tempest right over their homes.

  1. Those bullies teased her once too often didn't they?

  4. Have I told you that I love your short stories?

  5. What fun, an O. Henry ending. Don't we all wish we could have "the power" at sometime in our life. Every time a speeder passes me when I'm driving I wish a cop would appear and ONE DAY one did and nailed the speeder. Justice, I would say.
Your story was delightful and gives us food for thought.

  6. Elephant's Child; yes they did, but I don't know if they will connect the freak storm that hits only their houses with Anya.

Delores; she let it rip alright! Major damage was done to their homes.

Merle; I used to just tune out any teasing, getting angry just didn't seem worth the effort. with no reaction at all, the snobby kids soon left me alone.

fishducky; yes you have , but I don't mind hearing it again.

Manzanita; crikey! Now I have to find out who O Henry is...
Yes, I wouldn't mind having the power now and again.

  7. I like that one and I hope all those nasty people got soaked and their roofs leaked and everything else that the tempest could cause.

  8. Seems like a super-power that might be handy to have ... but I think I would prefer one that would just make everyone be nice!
