Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words/prompts are supplied by Charlotte and can be found here

This week's words/prompts are:

1. death

2. truth

3. chemistry

4. restaurant

5. Mom

6. opportunity

and/or:

1. fact

2. agency

3. instruction

4. clothes

5. philosophy

6. people

Here is my story:

Khoral had the children entranced with his facts about chemistry. “I’ll tell you the truth,” he said. “It isn’t all about test tubes and laboratory experiments. Chemistry happens almost everywhere else too. In your Mum’s kitchen even.” “Really?” Charlotte’s eyes were wide with wonder. “How?” she asked. “Well,” said Khoral, "chemistry is simply a matter of taking physical things, you know, a bit of this, a pinch of that, and mixing them to see what kind of reaction you get.” Charlotte caught on very quickly. “Like making a cake,” she said. “A bit of flour, add some eggs and sugar, then bake it. The heat causes the reaction and makes the mixture a cake.”

“That’s exactly right,” said Khoral, "and just like laboratory experiments, there are instructions to follow. Your mum’s recipe book has the instructions for cakes and yummy dinners, a Restaurant has instructions on how to cook meals for dozens of people at once.” “My mum does that by calling for pizza,” said Joe. Everyone laughed. “What else?” asked Kate. “Long ago some people discovered a chemical reaction that made nylon, I don’t remember exactly what from, but a few years later nylon was used to make many things, even clothes,” said Khoral. “How can we learn more about things like that?” asked Joe.

“If you have the opportunity to go to college after high school, you can continue learning about chemistry there. In high school you will do chemistry and physics too, but in college you can specialize if you want. Of course you still have to do the basic lessons, like math, but there are plenty more to choose from. Some of you might want to study philosophy.” “What’s that?” asked Charlotte. “That’s an explanation for another day,” said Khoral. “I have to leave you now, I have an appointment with the travel agency. I want to find out how to visit the South Pole.”

  1. "Death is the only truth," said Dogbreath, River's old chemistry teacher, as they lunched together in a famous five star restaurant called simply "Mom".

As a matter of fact her escort agency had given her an instruction leaflet that began with a list of allowable clothing items before detailing company philosophy and how to deal with pompous people like Dogbreath. Being a successful escort was not going to be as easy as River had imagined.

    1. Yorkshire Pudding; it may not be an easy job, but I'm sure she will manage and somehow deal with Dogbreath in a manner that doesn't seem rude but makes him aware he is not welcome.

  2. Mom's restaurant gave us the opportunity to find out the truth about death through chemistry.

  3. A lovely use of the words, but it is the last sentence that has focused my attention. I would love to hear of Khoral's adventures in Antarctica.

    1. Elephant's Child; thank you. I'm going to have to research Antarctica. I know nothing about it.

  4. Every child should have a Khoral in their lives to make it interesting and fun. I really like that fellow.

    1. Arkansas Patti; I really like Khoral too and wish he was based on someone real, not just a figment of my imagination, although being a figment gives him a lot more possibilities.

  5. He always takes the children on such fascinating and educational paths, and they have fun doing it.

The South Pole will be quite an adventure.

    1. messymimi; he also encourages thinking and education which were big things on his home planet. I'm going to have to research a little about the South Pole.

  7. Very well done again, clever, a joy to read!
As my Spanish customer recently said to me: "Bravo" - I pass this on to you!
I could come up only with a sad story of our Mum dying, I don´t want to make anyone miserable (despite there were "funny" situations, too), so I skip this.

    1. Iris Flavia; thank you. I skipped the death word too and focused on chemistry and opportunity.

  8. I liked this story, Khoral Kai is always an asset to your story. Thanks!

  9. Good use of the prompts and continuing tales of Khoral. I am afraid my cooking can never be called chemistry because I use lots of mixes and frozen foods.

    1. Granny Annie; so the chemistry has taken place before you buy them. Thank you

  10. Khoral will have some good stories if he goes to the South Pole. And he'll also have some good stories if he doesn't!

  11. What an imaginative story! I can see Khoral on many adventures.
