Sunday Selections #33

It's Sunday Selections time again!

Time to post photos that have been hiding away in your computer files, photos you may have completely forgotten about.
Have a hunt through your files and find them.

This idea comes to us from Kim, of frogpondsrock, who realised one day that she takes many more photos than she uses, as we all do, and wanted to post some of the older ones on her blog.

A once a week meme seemed like a good idea, so Sunday Selections was born, and anyone at all can join in.

I often choose a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week my theme is:

GRAFFITI

I took these photos roughly about this time last year.

Most graffiti is just a bunch of tags, defacing property, done in black, but some are multicoloured and are very artistic. Clearly the perpetrators have talent.

The following pictures are not graffiti in my opinion, I consider these to be Art.
I wish I'd taken a long shot of the whole wall, so that you can all enjoy the magnificence as I did.

This art covers a whole wall that I used to walk past often when I lived in the Eastern suburbs.
It's quite close to where my home used to be.

When I first noticed it, the wall had a different picture and when it was replaced with this one, I decided to take photos.

It's very colourful, (I'm sure you'll agree), and rather than being just random sprayings, I think this might be done by the home owner, or he/she has commissioned a local artist to decorate the wall.

This skull and crossbones is at one end of the work.....

...and this... pirate?... fisherman?... is at the other end.

Just before I moved away, I noticed the wall had been painted over again, and now has a completely different artwork.
I meant to take photos, but the rush of moving took over and I forgot.

I have plans to get back there soon and take pictures and maybe go again next year to see if it has changed again.
(If this is an annual thing, and I'm pretty sure it is,I'm sure the owner wouldn't mind having the art documented for posterity).

To join in with Sunday Selections, post photos of your choice under the Sunday Selections title, then go to Kim's site, add your name to her linky list and leave her a comment.
Then have a look at what others have posted for their selections.
There are some really good photographers out there.

  1. There's graffiti and then there's graffiti. This is most definitely art work. Actually my definition of graffiti is any markings where they are NOT wanted regardless of how artistic they are.

  2. Love it. Thanks. A few years back one of our local politician (opposition) made a big song and dance about graffiti and got the local media to come and watch him scrub some off. The problem was, it was a commissioned artwork, put on the wall to discourage graffiti. Ooops.

  4. There is some seriously good street art out there. I love Melbourne's laneways and there are pockets of good stuff here in Hobart as well.

  5. Delores; I agree, a lot of graffiti is actually very good art.

EC; politicians never do get it right do they?

Toni; yes, they are. This one is actually one whole picture and I'm sure I missed a couple of sections with the camera.

frogpondsrock; there is a lane way in the city here that has 4 really good pictures, I think I've posted about them before, way back when the blog was newish. I'll check and if I haven't...well that can be another Sunday Selection.

  6. I like some graffiti, there are some seriously talented artists out there, sadly the idiot taggers give them a bad name with their rubbishy scribbles.

  8. I've always loved looking out for the street art when on a train or tram, there can be some really good stuff out there, although there was one that featured Mickey Mouse that Miss 5 found once which was a little inappropriate :s

There was someone on the public radio station talking about a dragon walk that they had mapped through Melbourne and they mentioned a changing work of street art that had featured 3 dragons but had now been replaced by a solo dragon. i'd love to go find it, but it's unfortunately not on the walk :(

  9. Jayne; it's such a shame that these talented artists are branded with the same brush as the taggers.

    Windsmoke; agreed.

amandab; I would love to see a dragon wall.
